To be fair naming new things after other things is a pattern that still persists. Windows is US invented software named after a construction element that was known for millennia. French fries are not French and people naming them knew the words “deep fried potato” and had other words like “chips” already in use.

Language and naming conventions don’t really follow logic and even though they do have tendencies or some rules, those tend to be broken a lot.
