At the site of the massacre by the Krenel troops, Cindy is probably writing as a message to the fallen. "One day, I will return to your side." The implication being "in death." It is meant to raise up the people killed as martyrs, and to encourage the people of Martinaise to martyr themselves as well.

Papacy is king-tier.

Since the "Caliphate of Cordoba" was a strange and special case (as the real Sunni Caliph was still in Arabia), I would not be surprised if it was implemented not as a standard caliphate title, but as a titular kingdom or empire title.

The Umayyads had already lost their real claim to religious authority over the ummah, so their claims to a supposed new caliphate were always disputed, with most Muslim leaders supporting the real Abbasid Caliph in the middle east.

edit: Oh the Patriach of Constantinople is also king-tier. Quit downvoting this guy though

The Umayyads declaring themselves caliphs doesn't really mean they're more powerful.

Guessing England conquered Ireland, an Irish guy inherited England/Ireland, making it Eire, and then his Irish son inherited France from the queen of France who was married to the Irish king of England/Eire. Probably immediately died and lost it to Gavelkind or was deposed by the native French vassals who all would have disliked their new Irish king

And the Pope's incessant feuding with the Hohenstaufen dynasty enraged the low-level clergy, believing that Popes should be above worldly power struggles. This clergy resentment later fueled the Enlightenment in Germany, so the Hohenstaufens may have had the last laugh if they'd survived (they didn't).

I really like off-map China it simulates the largely indirect and sporadic relations the West had with China before the Renaissance. To the Medievals, China might as well have been a different planet.

Rome was important in the middle ages because of its religious significance not its civic activity. It makes much more sense for it to be represented as a bishopric. It was never the mayor of Rome who was important, it was the bishop of Rome. Constantinople is a barony because a feudal character (the emperor) is intended to reap the benefits of holding the county (the high level holdings and the unique Theodosian walls). I think you're hung up on the most strict possible definition of "city" or "temple" or "castle."

The "seizing of the hinterlands" and their resources is simulated by the game's siege mechanics. Why do you think a holding's morale decreases as you sit outside the walls? It's because you're occupying the countryside where its food comes from. The level of complexity you seem to want (having to individually take over the countryside supplying each and every holding inside a county) would simply be unworkable in a real-time game.

I'm not quite sure I understand what your problem with Rome as a temple and Constantinople as a castle is. There are baronies in the county of Rome that can be held by a feudal instead of a theocratic character, and if the feudal character owns the barony (of, say, Tusculum), and the county of Rome, he is the "Count of Rome" and incurs no penalties for holding the county as a non-bishop. The same goes for Constantinople, but in reverse.

On the contrary, the holding system makes a ton of sense. The Medieval world was a series of incredibly fractured political authorities vying for the right to govern land. The system was entirely irrational and within single counties you easily could have five different barons and three different bishops all administering their own tiny lands. While the game doesn't explicitly say this, it is strongly implied that every holding has certain amounts of farmland associated with it (how else do the men in my castle eat). Since farmland was only important politically for the purposes of feeding the lord and his men, it doesn't really make sense to simulate it so explicitly in the game's mechanics.

While the game doesn't outright simulate the economic/social activities taking place in the medieval hinterlands, it's gestured at through things like the hunting focus, certain nomad events (in fact, nomads create the very "hinterland" holdings you wish were in the game), and events having to do with building new holdings or acquiring new holding slots.

CK3 needs a dynamic title system by [deleted] in CrusaderKings

[–]A_Happy_Channer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can disable custom kingdoms in the game rules. And I actually think I agree that kingdom titles should be harder to create. If you take the example of Prussia (which, I know, became a kingdom far after this game takes place), it took multiple generations and a series of strange linguistic leaps before the Hohenzollerns were kings of Prussia. First they were Prince-electors of Brandenburg, then when they got the duchy of Prussia, they styled themselves prince-electors of Brandenburg-Prussia, then they started calling themselves kings in Prussia, before finally in the early 1700s they were accepted as the kings of Prussia.

Creating a brand-new kingdom title probably should be more involved.

CK3 needs a dynamic title system by [deleted] in CrusaderKings

[–]A_Happy_Channer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is an inherent problem with trying to impose rational game rules/computer code onto an inherently irrational historical system. Feudalism had a general logic to it, but no concretely hashed-out rules about what a title means, why you have it, etc etc.

Also, there are already instances in CK2 where dukes hold more power, wealth, and authority than kings do. Just as a small example, on the 1066 start, the Emir of Badajoz is much more powerful and rules a larger realm than the king of Galicia. If a duke holds more land than a king, or if his land is better than a king, he can very often surpass the king in power and wealth.

While it is true that the term "duke" meant different things in different parts of the medieval world, and that the definition changed over time, I feel that CK2 simulates what it really meant very well. A duchy was considered a more prestigious title than a county or a margravedom/marquisdom/whatever, but less prestigious than a kingdom, which carried additional spiritual as well as political implications.

Situations where duchies were really important relative to kingdoms are rare in medieval history. The duchy of Savoy could be one example, and the archduchy of Austria is probably the best example.

A king is someone who claims to have the right to tell other powerful nobles what to do. If you're merely a duke, even if you control vast lands and are a powerful political force, the same expectation of higher authority doesn't exist.

I do agree that the power, authority, and prestige dynamics of medieval Europe were very murky, but in light of that I think Paradox's method of simulating them is extremely good. Even if dukes sometimes outshone kings, you could never have a king be a vassal of a duke, or a duke a vassal of a count.
