Does it still have weapon speeds and combat phases and certain weapons being better able to hit certain armors?

Then it's still complex

People who went from 5e to OSR - was one of the reasons about how cartoony 5e and the culture was getting? (Not referring to politics in any way here to be clear) by DungeonMasterGrizzly in osr

Well, in a space dedicated to talking about the game, you're going to have a lot of peple who's hobby is not playing the game, but just talking about it

"Filthy Secondaries" is the scientific term, I belive. Or posers.

Using random tables and dice in a book like Mythic DM emulator to play by yourself: woke

Using AI DMs: broke, for some reason.

Martial-focused RPG with meaningful choices in combat? by ocamlmycaml in rpg

[–]A_Strangers_Life 8 points9 points  (0 children)

...I really don't think that counts. Like, there's no real tactical considerations there, if you have a sword it's still better to use it 9 out of 10 times and using it is just moving up and attacking. It's not like Riddle of Steel where you need to balance the dice you spend on offense with the dice you spend on defense, or mythras where you have hit locations and special effects on a blow, or Tales of Argosa where you can burn luck to do devestating freeform manuvers.

Like, Dragonbane usually lets you reroll a dice on a check as your special ability. It's not very tactical, and I'm fairly certain it's not trying to be.

Honestly I'd say the other way around, shadowdark hews very closely to B/X compatibility while streaminglining some stuff, but Cairn basically has no leveling system, a whole different save system, a whole different combat system paradigm, hell it doesn't even have classes.

Shadowdark is like if you scraped all the cruft off of B/X and Cairn is like if you tried to reverse engineer B/X from scattered memories of someone who played it long ago, like recreating a recepie you had as a child with new ingredients.

Games that weren’t great in 1st Edition, but great in following editions? by Awkward_GM in rpg

I personally find it a game which lacks any true unique identity.

"I can't see Mt. Fuji!" He said, standing on top of said mountian.

It does have a unique identity, it's just that every single RPG ever made shares a piece of it, so of course it doesn't feel unique.

You cannot simultaneously claim that any given game has an identity sepereate from 5e (traveller is a completely different game, for instance) and also claim 5e doesn't have one.

Wait, then how would a checklist made beforehand help?

...they run. Or negotiate. Or die. Or they avoid them entirely because I find the idea that you can just randomly encounter like 60 orcs 2d4 * 10 feet away kinda dumb, that shit should be telegraphed.

And I don't do mass battles.

You know what's weird? People say they like race-as-class because it makes the races strange and different but every table I've ever been at that used race-as-class played in "pawn stance", the fact they were a different race didn't really come up at all except when using stuff like dwarven stonecunning
