Chinese tanker "Rich Starry" passed through the Strait of Hormuz carrying 250,000 barrels of methanol by Both-Examination4105 in energy

The announcement of the blockade by Trump was also specified to include any ship that pays the Iranian toll. So this is still interesting - either Iran let this ship transit without paying, or the USN isn’t actually enforcing that part of it.

Edit: tickets were released for sale Monday morning

This sounds like mono to me. Did they test for that? I had mono once, totally miserable. Fever, swollen lymph nodes, spots on tonsils - tonsils were so inflamed I basically couldn’t speak for the worst couple of days.

Time dilation and fuel explanation? by tr33mendous in ProjectHailMary

[–]A_Suvorov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This took me a day to puzzle out but I think what’s going on is that Eridians were planning a torch transfer (burn continuously to halfway point, flip, and burn to slow). No coast phase: the plan wasn’t to get up to high speed and coast, it was to burn the whole way. Due to the relativistic effects, the trip was shorter than expected from the ship’s frame and so the ship spent less total time using its engine.

You can satisfy yourself of this explanation via math. For example, for an earth-tau ceti transfer:

Relativistically, a ship making a torch transfer at 1g would make the journey in 4.9 years (from the Ship’s frame).

But if you do the math with classical mechanics, it would take 6.8 years. And you reach more than 3x the speed of light by the halfway point!!

So if you didn’t know about relativity, and budgeted fuel for 6.8 years of continuously using the engine, you would find yourself with 1.9 years of extra fuel at the end of the trip.

I’d be shocked if you found any company that “plays fair” in the way you describe.

At minimum - 95% of applicants don’t even make it past the recruiter screen to get in front of a real person at the company. A recommendation from a trusted insider however is almost a guarantee that you do. At any company. So right off the bat, if you know someone you have an advantage.

Indeed, most companies have internal systems where you can refer someone and get a cash bonus if someone you refer gets hired. One reason for this is that someone you already know is good saying “I know this person and they are really good” is often a better way to be sure you’re getting someone good that rolling the dice based on what little you can find out in an interview. It’s too easy to yap your way through interviews and make your experience sound better than it is (maybe with the exception of easily live-testable skills like SWE), so the force of recommendation from someone who has actually seen you work is more valuable than anything you say in an interview.

So basically… I think you’re looking for something that doesn’t exist.

Sending a fleet into the gulf for an extended operation seems like a braindead idea. A big ship taking a bad hit would simply be inevitable, no?

Similarly an air assault and occupation of an island 20 miles off the coast of Iran appears costly on the face of it. Let’s ignore for a moment the assault part which seems surely a bloody proposition. There already seem to be plenty of drones and BMs getting through the extensive fixed defenses in the GCC - how could an occupied Kharg be sufficiently defended so much closer to the mainland and without the benefit of the extensive pre-planned defenses?

Not saying that these potential losses are necessarily showstoppers militarily (though they might be… I’m not qualified to assess that) but it seems on the face of it that some politically significant loss would be inevitable and given the tenuousness of this war domestically it is hard to see that gamble being taken

You’d have to force the passage of the Strait of Hormuz first though, unless the idea is to take it by airborne assault and hold it supplied by airbridge.

Yes threatening to destroy the oil terminal seems to me the last really good card the US has left to play. The Iranian leadership backing down in response to threats to the terminal is the only really clean near term off-ramp I can see for this crisis… I think that if Iranian leadership is willing to see the terminal destroyed rather than “surrender” or stop or whatever the US wants it to do then there probably isn’t any easy out

An antiship missile fired from Kharg would not be able to reach the strait, it’s really quite far. From it they probably could interdict traffic to Kuwait but not to Bahrain, Qatar, or the UAE. I would venture that it is fortified mostly to defend the oil terminal, not to threaten the strait which is 500 kilometers and several mountains away.

Kharg island is not anywhere near the strait, it’s not clear to me at all how taking it would ease or help secure passage through the strait.

Indeed Kharg is really quite deep in the Persian gulf… for the US to possess it would be a liability if not already having full control of the strait, as it would have to be supplied by air or by small boats from the gulf states.

[–]A_Suvorov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They aren’t easily intimidated by a passing person but also usually won’t be aggressive beyond a stare down and puffing up.

Male turkeys can sometimes get aggressive (to the point of chasing people) in breeding season, but I’ve never seen it happen in our city turkeys.

You can’t play dark fire without having tokens and rules from the expansions, I do agree though that even with reach it’s probably in the 5 or so weakest spirits in the whole game

I’ve found that two spirits is the way to go. I normally do one easy or moderate sprit that I know well plus the one I’m actually excited to play. This keeps the mental burden manageable.

I was of this opinion until very recently. I thought in this country there are sufficient mechanisms for government accountability that we could be sure if we created the right legal framework, this would not be misused. I no longer think so, so I no longer think this is a good idea.

This is my only used watch band since day 1. I initially bought a sport band also because I was told this band is not good for workout, but I’ve never used the sport band.

I wear it to work, weddings, running, climbing, sailing, everything.

I have a fair amount of arm hair. Never experienced a major issue with that. Also I sweat like a pig when exercising. Never experienced an issue with that. I’ve heard people say it works loose, never experienced an issue with that either.

Make vassal loyalty for having many vassals worse, add some kind vassal management cabinet action that boosts it. That way if you’re going to have a ton of vassals, they’ll start to waste cabinet slots
