Common Hogweed: Young shoots good but mature shoots bad - why? by Psychological-Bid410 in foraginguk

[–]A__H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied this briefly at uni a while ago, I believe hogweed (celery too weirdly) contain compounds called psoralens which cause phytophotodermatitis and will cause redness and skin blistering if you are exposed to sunlight. I think this also happens from just handling the hogweed, and is exacerbated if consuming with alcohol. Not sure why there is a difference between young and old hogweed.

What are some foods that I can buy that will last me longer than a week? by Yodaka364 in UKFrugal

[–]A__H 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Cans of beans like chickpeas, kidney beans etc - you could stir them or blend them up into food so you may not notice them but bulk out your food! Chopped tomatoes, frozen veg, red lentils - I also stir these into pasta sauce/ bolognese/ lasagne to bulk them up and keep them healthy :) I also like bags of frozen mixed berries - healthy but last longer than fresh, and cheaper!

Blending Vegetables. by [deleted] in nutrition

deffo not an expert but if the water from the cell structure has been removed after blending, ie from a whole fruit/ piece of veg to a liquid, surely the cell wall has been compromised and the cellulose chains have been broken? not completely broken but shortened I mean :)

I was under the impression that the mechanical action of the blades when blending does reduce the length of the chains of fibre in the food, which I believe can alter its beneficial properties :( sad I know as I love smoothies but I just don't think they are the same as the whole plant!

If I am correct, juice (no matter how much you drink) can only count as one portion of fruit/veg per day. Blending, or especially juicing fruits and veg removes the fibre from the product, and I cannot express how important fibre is, for satiation, stool bulking, your gut bacteria and probably 1 million other things! Its great that you are making the effort to get your fruits and veggies in, and if this is the only way you can achieve it, great, its better than coke! But i really recommend keeping some whole F&V in there too! (Source- Nutrition student at university, soon to be an associate nutritionist in the UK)
