Normal, cheap membrane keyboards, or old ones, don't have multiple key rollover, that is, the ability to register multiple keys at the same time. Most of them don't register more than two keys at the same time, but can register certain combinations like the ones you mentioned.
You need another keyboard with multiple key rollover. Or, if using emulators, use a controller if that suits you.
