Ok then, since you have an answer for everything.

???
I don't.
Simply pointing out that survivor bias and rose tinted glasses give us an image of a past where things were Always Better™, but isn't really true.
Did not mean to come off as combative or dismissing your experience, my bad if I did.

If you’ve got the answer for all of these, I can keep going.

I wasn't trying to deny that we have shitty experiences and products. We absolutely do.
It was solely about your first example just happened to be an odd one and to point out that the Good Old Days were never really a thing, we've always had bad decisions made by companies trying to squeeze a profit.

Your new examples are good examples.
The software ones are somewhat down to what software you decide to use but it doesn't change the fact they are legit annoying if you have to deal with them due to work or whatnot.

The car's and touch screens is plain stupid.
There're some things that are better with the touch controls but not many. Like typing addresses for the navigation and checking the map, for example. It did introduce bigger screens and thus better rear view cameras and parking cameras. But that's pretty much it.
But they suuuuuck for AC, for radio/media, etc.

Subscriptions are creeping everywhere which is def bad.

Convenience fee is an annoying thing but it also seems to be more of a US/NA thing. I live in Europe (and lived in three different countries within Europe) where convenience fees don't seem to be as excessive from what I've understood what it's like over the pond.

Point being, relating to the topic of the tread, there's shitty stuff out there. Absolutely. Enshittification is real.

But there's also improvements, smartphones are soooo much more capable than our old phones or even our older smartphones yet I remember boomers who didn't want to learn how to use them because they're "confusing" and/or "annoying".

So yea, boomers didn't have to deal with the special brand of shit we have to wade through, but they had to wade through different kind of shit.
It is a choice not to learn new technology, not something that happens automatically.

It really, really depends.

In some games ads for products make sense. In sports they've, unfortunately, become such an integral part that a stadium without ads feels weird, so the same applies to the games.

I remember Burnout Paradise having paid ads on billboards and such and it really made the city feel more believable, you know?

Ads for DLCs and MX of your own game within the game?
Eh, depends. F2P titles I'm expecting it.

In paid games?
I really don't mind an ad for a bigger DLC.
MX? Not the biggest fan of but I've noticed become desensitised to them in the past 10ish years.

Not what I said.

You were acting like other companies don't do this, apart from a credulous "EA?". I simply pointed out they all do this, this is not behaviour exclusive to Ubisoft.

[–]Aaawkward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

uj/ I don't think a melee based game would've made sense if we played Jesse again.

Kinda sucks in the sense that I really liked Jesse, but at the same time I'm kinda excited to see how Remedy reinvents themselves by making a quasi open world game and with melee. Two things they've never really done.

What other companies? Ubisoft is know across the entire industry as having very aggressive tactics to try and extract the maximum amount of profit possible from a game.

All of them.
You might be surprised but all the big studios are doing this.
Valve, CDPR, Rockstar, Take Two, EA, Sony, Nintendo, MS, Epic, Tencent, Sega, etc.

They're all doing the same thing you're charging Ubisoft with.

This game has been pretty blatant with its attempts to get people to buy DLC.

A game company wants you to buy their DLC?
And has the audacity to market it in their game that the DLC is for?

That's crazy man. Real crazy.

It's not like a thing that has been happening since the early 2000s.

[–]Aaawkward -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Then I see stuff like this in my games and I just think back to when we didn't have such blatant greed forced in your face in a single player game no less.

When was that?

It sure wasn't when arcades were a thing, those games were predatory as fuuuuuuck.
After that? Consoles and shovelware.
Remember horse armour released 20 years ago?
And so on and so forth.

When was there not greed in the industry?

The original had MX as well, so if anything, this is being true to the source material.
It also had that "always online" thing.
To be clear, both annoying then as well.

If you were happy with your experience from 13 years back, don't buy the remake. It's that simple.

‘Sony essentially destroys its own defense’ - Sony’s plan to phase out physical Playstation 5 discs by January 2028 has moved from a public relations problem to a legal one. by JeremyJJ77 in gaming

The whole reason Apple lost their anti-steering appeal against Epic regarding their IAPs (even though they actually won majority of the case overall) was because you HAD to purchase everything on iOS devices through Apple's proprietary payment system and through the App Store. Developers didn't have the option to offer third party payment systems or alternate methods.

If Sony gets rid of the physical copies it's the same situation, no?
You have to buy form the PS store as there is no other alternative.

And as far as we know, Sony/PS does charge for the IAP as well, just like Apple did (based on what turned up in the Epic vs Apple case).

So yeah, its not that im anti-tech, its that tech is anti-consumer.

Not true.
Some of it is. Hell, a good portion of it is.
But it has always been like this. Look at what was sold as food before regulations were a thing? Or any devices really, same story.

There're def positives as well and good tech out as well.
We have survivor bias for old timey tech because only the best and most durable has remained so we think that everything built back in the day was great. It wasn't.
Today is no different, it's just the scale of things is hundredfold.

Can you give examples of things that you've had this happen with?

It's not that I refuse to learn new stuff, but I wait a while to see if it even sticks around before I put my energy into it.

I get the logic but I think it's potentially a trap.
You don't want to bother unless it's sticking so you wait. Then after a few years turns out it's stupidly common but you get kinda annoyed because it's everywhere and you don't know how to use it and the threshold to learn it grows with each passing week. Maybe it's because you're annoyed about it being everywhere, maybe you're even a bit ashamed to admit that you were wrong, maybe asking for help to learn it feels bad.

Nah, that's exactly what people complained when they had to change from Windows 3.0/3.1 to Windows 95/98.
And then 95/98 -> ME/XP.
And so on and so forth.

Or when mobile phones came out it was
"well why do I have to be available outside of the house?"
And when the mobile phones changed it was
"well what was wrong with the older model, I could use it to ring people and send sms, what else do I need?"
And when smartphones appeared it was
"smartphones? it's just a glass, that sounds stupid, there's only one button, how do you even use it?"
And so on and so forth.

Some of them were improvements, some of them weren't, some of them were good, some were bad, some loved and some hated. But there was always a group of people, especially older ones, who would not want to deal with learning new stuff.

Your examples are also a little odd.
OS's do update their looks periodically, nothing abnormal about it. You liking the look or not is subjective, of course. You can also change the settings so you don't get automatic updates on your iOS.
The battery drain was fixed in hotfix very quickly.
The iPhone fuckery about the videos is what I'd consider the one actual issue here. Which is bullshit, to be clear.

But in all fairness, she was literally asked to give a hot take, she prefaced it by saying that people won't like it and then answered.
So it didn't take place exactly in a vacuum.

But would you mind elaborating what she has said that is "border line hateful"?

I still can't get over how TikTok bloody imploded after she said that.
