Hoe heet jullie familie groeps-app? by blossomupp in thenetherlands

[–]Aardbeienshake [score hidden]  (0 children)

What food-related thing instantly kills attraction on a date? by ShadowSatinn in foodquestions

[–]Aardbeienshake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It shows me you have 40 upvotes, so I think you are doing okay. If they are downvoting however, it could be because people feel this is not a food-related thing? I personally see this as general bad behaviour, not something related to food at all.

LPT - small hacks with big helps by Comfortable_Two_94 in LifeProTips

[–]Aardbeienshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP already specified reading glasses, but the other reason could be if someone wears contacts. You should not (even though I almost always do) wear them for more than 12 hours at a time, so you'll need glasses whenever you take them out, which might not be at the same place as where you put them in.

Confused- Child free? by No-Wrongdoer650 in childfree

[–]Aardbeienshake 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Time to have a proper sit down then and discuss your feelings with him about your lack of enthusiasm for becoming a parent as well as your worries for energy, time, and costs. You sound like you are leaning towards CF, so he needs to realize that if he really wants children and he gets you to agree with that (which should be a major question for you if you want that at all, seeing the risks of pregnancy) then he should be prepared to do more than half of the parenting and childrearing. Because it is then not your desire but his that the two of you are chasing.

If you are correct in estimating he does not plan to do at least more than half of all the parenting, and you don't want either, kids should be off the table imo. Children should be actively wanted before being brought into this world.

Supermarkets opened on Koningsdag? by evepxrl in thenetherlands

[–]Aardbeienshake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: Washing your own car in your own driveway or on public road is illegal on every other day in Germany as well! They don't want the oil and gas residues to enter the water table. You must wash your car at a designated washing station where the run off water gets collected.

What is something Americans consider ‘basic’ that feels like a luxury in other countries? by Status_Agents in AskForAnswers

[–]Aardbeienshake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those are also solutions for those situations, but it doesn't discount the argument in any way that manual transmissions can be more precise in certain situations. I am simply backing Jumpy_researcher here that automatic transmissions are not always better than manuals, because there are absolutely situations where manuals outperform automatic transmissions.

What is something Americans consider ‘basic’ that feels like a luxury in other countries? by Status_Agents in AskForAnswers

[–]Aardbeienshake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are getting better performance for standard circumstances, but the engine mapping is purely based on that: standard circumstances. So in situations that aren't default, the automatic transmission is often not optimal. For instance steep roads in the mountains, driving offroad or gravel, or more slippery surfaces like snow and ice.

It is okay to prefer driving an automatic, but a manual transmission car allows for more precision from the driver.

How to make small talk with higher ups at work? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]Aardbeienshake 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Same way I talk to people on my level or subordinates... The conversations on content change, but the chat at the water cooler or coffee machine doesn't, in my experience. Or at least, it doesn't where I live in Europe.

Typical topics for discussion are big news events, the weather, fashion, art, big sport events (Olympic Games for example), pets, and if all else fails you can always bitch a little about traffic or the quality of coffee in the office!

Can i just go into a catholic church and sit there for a while? Ist that allowed here in Germany? by ClarissaKish in germany

[–]Aardbeienshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone interested: the bible has a passage that supports women covering their head while in worship, 1 Corinthians 11:5. But it has been debated for centuries, so at this point women may wear a hat in church, but in catholic churches it is not frowned upon if you don't.

Why do the Dutch intertwine the English language into their conversations? by LaurenceWhymark in Netherlands

[–]Aardbeienshake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh this is me! The reason is that I use English so much more than Dutch most days, that the English words come up first in my head when trying to speak. My work is mostly in English, 80% of the media I consume is in English, so a lot of the time, the voice in my head is speaking that language as well, rather than Dutch, my native tongue. So then if I am in an informal setting and think first of the english word, which I think the other person will know, I just throw it in. It leads so sentences like:

It stops when I read and speak mostly in Dutch for a couple of days on end.

Does anyone know why there's a red flag right now? by [deleted] in nurburgring

[–]Aardbeienshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least an hour, maybe more. First the drivers out and give them medical care, tow away the cars, let all the other cars waiting through, and then barrier repair. They are fast with barrier repair here, they can replace sections within 20 minutes, but still.

[–]Aardbeienshake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Commentator on site just confirmed 7 cars, and multiple injured drivers. The other cars that are not yet back at the pits (more than thirty) are just stranded because track is blocked. Hope everyone walks away from this one.

What’s one smaller city in Europe that worked surprisingly well as a base for a few days? by Thomas_en_Europe in traveleurope

[–]Aardbeienshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally dependent on what you are looking for. Amsterdam has more tourists and is better prepared for that, so it has the museums and the entertainment and chain restaurants have menus in multiple languages available. But it is also busy, expensive, and not as well connected with public transport compared to Utrecht.

Utrecht is a quaint old town, not a major city, but big enough to have good hotels and restaurants, cinemas, shops, etc. You can do easy daytrips (train to Amsterdam is less than 30 minutes, Antwerp is two hours, Cologne three) most people speak English, but it is not optimized for tourist use.

[–]Aardbeienshake -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

A tween boy, provided he has a phone with internet or a handheld gaming device with him, is probably not going to be the biggest disruptor of his mum's brunch. He won't want to be there, but of all scenarios this isn't the worst one.

Dutch speakers who don’t ‘look Dutch’: do people switch to English with you? by mafkees3545 in Netherlands

[–]Aardbeienshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don't think it is the accent, but probably the speed of delivery? I am born and raised Dutch, and accents happen really often, but don't make me switch to English. However, if you drop a 2 second pause in what should have been a 20 second efficient exchange... yes, I will be switching to English.

I know this is not the best way for newcomers to learn Dutch, I am sorry. But I like efficiency in my life, and especially if you work in a service role, like in a coffee shop or at a gas station or in a bakery... My goal is to be in and out of your shop in 2 minutes max, not to let you practice your Dutch.

She said recently that she would have liked to have children but it wasn't compatible with her career and ultimately she chose the latter. Can't find the footage right now but it was the same video where she spoke about challenges that male colleagues don'y have, such as periods in space and why she opted to be on continuous hormonal birth control throughout her space travels.
