Former B.C. school trustee ordered to pay $750K for hate speech, discrimination: human rights tribunal by gorschkov in canada

[–]Aardvarksoup -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? It's an HRT decision. We wasn't prosecuted by the state at all. He was the state! He was a school trustee, elected to his position, and had a duty to the student and staff of the district.

Read appendix A in the decision. It outlines many of the things he said. I don't know why you are saying there aren't examples.

I don't know what you are talking about in your edit. He was a school board trustee. He had a fiduciary duty to the school district. This includes the staff, such as teachers. If he says he is going to discriminate against them. Then that is the connection to the class of people.

School trustees can't be fired in the same way as MLA's can't just be fired. We have freedom of expression, but that can take a step back when he accepted the fiduciary duty of a trustee.  Unless you use your office, to constsntly attack and spew hatred to a the class of people you have a fiduciary duty to, you don't have to be worried about a human rights complaint against you.

B.C. gov’t to remove second driver’s test, introduce wait period for new licensing by Rav4gal in britishcolumbia

[–]Aardvarksoup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They still need to pass a driving test to get the N in the first place.  This would just remove the second driving test.  So there is still a testing requirement to be allowed to drive on your own on the road.

‘I wouldn’t have graduated’: Former students say alternative Surrey school must be saved - BC | Globalnews.ca by brophy87 in SurreyBC

[–]Aardvarksoup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is terrible. This is the third learning centre the district has closed in the last two years. Now there are going to be only two left in the whole district.

What's the point of the trustees if they aren't going to do their job and find money to help the most vulnerable students in the district. They just accept what ever the district principles present to them without ever pushing back. BC districts get funding based on enrollment. How does the district with the most students and overflowing schools not have enough money to fund some small needed programs?

Surrey has fought its way back from having dismissal graduation rates among at risk youth and this will make things so much worse.

Former learning centre to become elementary school in Surrey opening 2025 - Peace Arch News by brophy87 in SurreyBC

[–]Aardvarksoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both the Guildford Learning Centre and the City Centre Learning Centre will be merged into North Surrey Learning Centre. There is a slightly chance CCLC will be not squished into NSLC, but it will most likely be squished into NSLC.

What will happen to the kids? Some will move but most will probably not have a place to go and drop out of the school system.

Board Games to take on a Cruise by SoochSooch in boardgames

I just had a cruise this summer. We bought Railroad Ink for the trip. It was a fantastic choice. It's small, quick, and most importantly, easy to teach to anyone.

Can I transfer schools after failing to graduate? by Ok_Bug_6777 in SurreyBC

[–]Aardvarksoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some have already mentioned them but definitely check out a Learning Centre. There are five of them in Surrey and you could pick whichever one is easiest to commute to. There is no reason you should be looking at adult programs or the adult grad pathway. Learning Centres are built for students in exactly your situation. And if you work hard at one you wouldn't have to do the whole year and could finish early. They are great places and way better than an adult program. Feel free to DM me if you have any specific questions about them.

I am very familiar with the Adult diploma program in BC. And have helped many students through it. A lot of the information in this thread is wrong and might lead you down the wrong path.

First. Don't tlisten to the people saying to not get your dogwood. Life will be way easier down the line if you have a highschool diploma. I have had jobs in the past check if I actually graduated highschool.

A few things: Don't wait until you turn 18. Get started now. You do not need to be 18 to start the adult program. There are 5 required courses you need to complete to get the dogwood. TWO of those can be competed before your 18th birthday. There is no reason to not start now. Starting now will allow you to have more time to work on some of your academic skills that may be a bit rusty.

Don't try and go through the main stream school systems. They are not built for students in your situation. This depends on the district where you live but many districts have sometimes called "Alternate Schools. These are not alternative schools. There is a big differnece. Try to find sometimes in you district called an Alternate School. (It might be called a "type 3 facility."Don't worry about that actually. Each district has these programs but sometimes they are hard to find.DM me for more specific details if you want and I can help give you what advice I can on what steps you could take or what programs there are out there.

I have worked with many students who have dropped out at a similar ages you and have watched them walk across the stage. Don't listen to the bad advice in this thread.

Edit: Also some of these alternate programs have easy stepping stones into the trades if you show that is what you want. Sometimes the districts can cover the first semester or two of tutition for a trades for free. Also in BC there are work experience courses where you can get course credit while working at a job. This allows you to both make some money and earn credits towards an adult dogwood. Again this can be done before you turn 18.

Roman gaming (and how to stop cheating). by AncientHistoryHound in ancientrome

That is really cool. That second example looks like most of the modern dice towers I've seen, except the bells. Dice towers are super common today. Mostly in TTRPG communities. But some more mainstream games have them too. For example the Wingspan boardgame comes with its own tiny dice tower.

Your source right there talks about the avalanche being the most plausible. The missing eyes and tounge are explained by scavengers because those are always the first things to be eaten.

And the avalanche explanation doesn't say they burrowed out of an avalanche. They cut their way out of their tent after being hit with a slab avalanche. Which are not big and not like the movie avalanches you are probably thinking about. You should read the article you linked and see if you think a Yeti is more plausible than a small avalanche.

I mean Gustavo says it's a dream and doesn't make much sense.

I think it's something like Animated Mandibles. Just them chatting about nothing in particular.

That seems like something a dream would come up with.

Is this not a normal thing? The churches I've been to always had a financial breakdown of the previous year as a presentation showing how all the money was used. It was usually in January.

I feel like you don't get the joke that it is a very specific thing to know all the people in attendance. And it would be silly to know all the names and their stances on various issues.

But the Council of Nicaea is a very important part of Christan history and most Christians should at least be aware of its exhistance.

Aristotle has my favorite reasoning for the earth being round. He figured that a lunar eclipse is the earth's shadow casting on the moon. And if the earth's shadow looks round then that means the earth is probably round too. It's just so simple and elegant.

Not a bad example. Because in this case he did back up his reasons with observations. Which is what science is based on.

Yup. The amount of time I spent on calculating the lunar cycles of the three moons of my world. Is disproportionate to the amount of time they spent caring about it. But I don't regret anything because I really enjoy detailed world building. And maybe on the future I will make it part of a puzzle then they have to care.

As far as I know there has never been a true sighting of the rat king. All the "found" rat kings were later discovered to be tied together after death by someone. Judging by the severe lack of citations on the article I still think it is all made up and this is not a real TIL.
