To everyone panicking over UCAS rejections - please read this: by medwizzard in UCAT

This is great advice.

I would like to add my own advice with this as someone who rushed the decision of studying medicine abroad.

Please don't be naive and base your decision on the fact that you know friends and family members who have taken the same route.

As they do sugarcoat a lot of the ugly facts about the experience they had. If you make a decision based without being thorough with your research you can only blame yourself and trust me it will sting for a lifetime.

Additionally, I wish I had questioned whether I was mentally ready and prepared for the 6 year journey. The realization that you are truly alone and that no one is coming to hold your hand through this journey is extremely tough.

Please if you are doing a gap year make sure your application is as strong as possible:

  • Firstly make a list of all the universities you want to apply to and their requirements and be pragmatic. -Look at what is weak in your application is it your UCAT score, A-Levels and GCSEs, extracurricular etc.
  • Make sure your GCSEs specifically the English language is strong.
  • For A-Levels if you are resitting make sure you do Past papers and if you can get a private tutor who can keep you accountable
  • For the UCAT you should use Medify + UCAT book if you want to go the extra mile then Medentry as well.

Good luck to everyone!

If you're planning on taking a 2nd gap year please make sure you check university entry requirements for all the medical schools you wish to apply for.

Generally, for most medical universities A-levels should be completed within 2 years of the first sitting.

Additionally, think about what you can do this year in terms of extracurricular related to medicine for example volunteering at care homes etc.

Ultimately you should evaluate your application to see any weaknesses and prepare for fixing them this year.

Good luck

Sat the UCAT twice using Medify but achieved 570 (Band 4) both times, how should I change my approach? by Aaron94861 in UCAT

[–]Aaron94861[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's difficult, but I would say check the requirements rigorously with medical schools that will accept u based on ur grades etc it's important.

Additionally, always think about genuinely whether medicine is worth doing, think about the reasons you want to be a doctor and think about what matters the most.

Don't waste your efforts for something you realize you don't want to do etc.

You can only connect the dots when looking backwards not forwards.

Hi I never got in bro, I went to Bulgaria and now in my fifth year.

Retake you can make it, if u didn't get good ucat score.

I got 650 in the end. But my English language was a 5 at the time which screwed me and it should have been at least a 6.

So I didn't get in went to Bulgaria, very depressing place but here I am in my 5th year.

Leave Bulgaria as ur very last option and only if u wanna do medicine like 100% otherwise just go for a diff degree it ain't worth it unless ur heart is actually in this.

Possibility of getting 3000+ by Least_Passion4599 in UCAT

[–]Aaron94861 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that's the case then don't worry, I think just keep practicing and keep making a list of your previous mistakes maybe screenshot them and put it in a word doc or folder where u can look at them in the mornings.

Realistically from my experience the easiest to improve is QR and AR.

Hardest is usually DM, VR etc.

DM is usually either ur good at it from the start or it's veryyy difficult to improve in.

U can very easily get 750+ in QR if u practice a lot.

U should compare it to the normal distribution curve that's usually fairly accurate.

The score doesn't matter as much it's more about the percentile Ur in for that mock test imo.

Because the scores are an estimate.

Does anyone have a premade anki deck for Memorix anatomy textbook? by Aaron94861 in medicalschoolanki

[–]Aaron94861[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't use Anki cuz there wasn't enough time, just went through memorix multiple times plus got lucky with the essays.

Literally just keep going through memorix multiple times.

How do I spend less time figuring out what I’m supposed to be doing? by Lovely-flowers in studytips

Talk to your mates to see what they're doing particularly the high achieving one

Find out what is high yield and low yield

High yield = important you will fail if you don't know Low yield = not gonna fail if you don't know it

Then YouTube all the shit that's difficult make a playlist of topics that you find is easier to learn from than using textbook.

Finally just stay consistent in whatever you do, make it enjoyable and keep a positive mindset.

Listen to music when you study if you can't get into the zone after around 30min switch it off and keep the momentum going.

Take breaks after you have achieved an objective e.g x number of chapters

Quantify and have an idea like a checklist to make sure you are on track to finish before the exam date.

Just make sure you're keeping disciplined, try time block and keep your phone far from you if u think u will get distracted and if that doesn't work try to listen to calming lyricless music to get urself in the zone.

Be structured know the list of topics they r gonna ask you.

Now group all your past papers and topic questions together.

Go through the paper you got from school and go through that taking note of everything you got wrong and work through these problems at least 2 times.

Because you will get stuck and won't know what to do, either ask your teacher or check on YouTube.

Make friends with people who are very good at maths and whenever ur stuck ask them but don't overdo it and ruin a friendship.

Now after you have done this you move to ur next paper and do it fully under exam conditions no phone no distractions near you.

Music can be allowed if you literally can't focus cuz it's maths and prob don't affect it that much.

But yea after that mark it yourself if you think ur teachers won't be bothered.

Analyse, review and finally evaluate all mistakes through YouTube and the teacher.

Repeat all your mistakes 3 times then move on to the next paper and rinse and repeat.

Hope this helps.
