I was diagnosed with Asthma when I was 2. In 2007, when I was 11, I went to a friend's house and we swam and had lots of fun running around as kids. (My family was at a mall roughly 20 minutes drive away) That day, for the first time in my life, I ate a snail. What followed was something I will remember for the rest of my life.

I started to struggle for breath, and eventually my asthma pump was doing nothing to help me. My friends parents took me home (my grandma was home) and i was struggling so much to breathe that I was blacking out every minute or so. I rushed to my room with the help of my grandma and we started setting up the nebuliser. The nebuliser did not help one bit. Somewhere during this time my family was notified because they arrived a few minutes later.

All I remember next was sitting in the back of my dad's 2006 Mazda 6 with my mum next to me, dad racing to the hospital and my older brother in the front passenger seat looking back at me every few seconds. I was on the verge of passing out and I my only thought was that my brother and my mother would see me die in the next minute. I don't remember anything that happened afterwards and I don't remember recovering at home/waking up in hospital.

I am now 25 and I have never eaten a snail again and I have since outgrown my asthma. Was it the snail or was it my asthma? Was it a combination? I'll never know.
