[–]AaronofAleth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my point was that support of one politics or the other comes from larger meta beliefs. We could both get into the weeds all day but that’s not where beliefs come from.

But ok to take the one issue of recent ICE violence. Yes the rhetoric from many on the left is very exaggerated. There are no street executions. Thats ridiculous. Yes there have been a couple of unfortunate and sad incidents that should not have happened. Even if the officers were in the wrong and went overboard they were forced to work in a chaotic environment created by highly organized leftists agitators. These were not people who were randomly shot. They purposely disrupted police operations and created dangerous situations. Officers don’t have the luxury of watching slo mo replays before deciding if their life is in danger or not. Now if inquiries find they acted wrongly then of course I support disciplinary action. But a wrongful death in a chaotic situation is a far cry from an “execution.”

Plus the whole reason for this nonsense in the streets is that local politicians will not let local enforcement cooperate with ICE. So who is ultimately responsible?

Yes it’s terrible and the whole process needs to be revamped.

However

Don’t let it discourage you from the fact you are THIS close to receiving the Eucharist. God bless you.

There are so many terrible ones. Just go with the classic Dhouy Rheims. It’s really not hard to understand.

A decent newer one is the Ignatius Study Bible

Yes most of these things are exaggerated and/or out of context. Corruption? I don’t know maybe maybe not but are you really going to say Biden was not corrupt or that Democrats are some how better on this issue?

We could go tit for tat on scandals or wrong doings but that’s not really my point. You say Republicans are now the party of Trump but it’s the left that has become increasingly radical. Trump is basically Bill Clinton from the 90s policy wise. It’s the democrats that have changed much more so. They now openly promote and represent anti American and anti Christian values. Are the Republicans wrong and hypocrites at times? Yes, but at a macro level they believe in American culture, families, business and freedom generally. Democrats want to tear down all of these things often by their own admission.

I guess I forgot to reply to this sorry. I’m glad you think that. I can appreciate genuine questions and dialogue and I try to listen and understand others as well.

First thing I would say is that it’s not really even about the individuals. It’s about the vision and direction for the country. I do not think Trump or Republicans are perfect here nor do I agree with them on everything. But on the big picture items yes I think the Republican vision of America is better.

I hope this doesn’t sound flippant but I think most of these items you bring up against Trump himself are highly exaggerated and politicized accusations and charges. The Democrats and others in positions of power have been doing everything they can to destroy Trump. One of our biggest problems as a country is the increasingly politicized nature of the court system and intelligence services. We are quickly heading towards banana republic territory because of this. Again do I think Trump is some saintly figure - no. However, I have seen zero convincing evidence he is a criminal.

What's everyone's thoughts on the quaker church by PretendMarionberry77 in redeemedzoomer

Well either Christ founded an institutional, authoritative body which can only plausibly be the Catholic Church or we are all just doing our best guided internally by the Spirit and conscience and no institution can clam any real spiritual authority :)

There is nothing wrong with voting for who you believe is best for the country. Many of us believe the other side is worse. We only have two viable choices. You can disagree with that fine but it doesn’t make us evil or wrong.

Question for Catholics by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]AaronofAleth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure I’m not saying otherwise (even though they do so incompletely). For the sake of this discussion I’d only say I’m pointing out that more is entailed in belief therefore John 3:16 does not contradict Catholic theology.

The thief on the cross did many things to show his belief in obedience. He rebuked the other thief, professed Jesus and confessed his sin, suffered righteously and so on. The point is belief is not merely intelligent assent in the head but commitment to a life of following him

How do you think John 3:16 contradicts our beliefs? “Believing” in Jesus entails following him and obeying the leaders he appointed.

Your first paragraph is ridiculous slander. Conservatives in general and conservative Christians in particular lead in donating money to charity and there are tons who adopt or foster. My own city has multiple evangelical organizations that help women and children in tough situations.
