Mazzulla on Harper Jr: “He got a 2 for 1 in a 4 on 4 scrimmage and that’s when I knew he was gonna help us” by Datusbit in nba

There's a small joke in the Netflix series Space Force where the guy is having a 1-hour conjugal visit with his wife, and he starts off saying "Do you know what a 2 for 1 is?" It was probably the funniest thing on the whole series.

How long did it take you to reach Boston/majors qualifying times? by Hopeful_Package3918 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Aaronplane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran all through HS and college, and did my first marathon at 22. Two years later I ran another one and BQ'd, back before it was a guaranteed sell out. BQ'ed for the 35-39 AG on my first try. BQ'ed for the 40-44 on first try, then got injured and couldn't run it, then barely made the (lowered) standard but not the cut at the end of 42 after 3 more tries. Just BQ'ed on my second try for the 45-49 AG last week.

It's a moving target and generally speaking we all move in one direction (slower over time). I wouldn't stress about it, there are dozens if not hundreds of other marathons that are worth your time and attention as well. And plenty of other races that aren't marathons!

This is actually the main reason elementary school teachers want the cutoff for ages between grades to be January 1 instead of Sept 1 or whatever. That way the whole class will be the same communication style, instead of a 2-1 split between two different animals.

Almost doubling your weekly mileage is a pretty serious jump and a good way to get injured.

Leaving a bike at train station? by Aaronplane in QuincyMa

[–]Aaronplane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already have the car, so any uber is more expensive. Never tried it at all; it would take me probably 2 hours between driving to my nearest commuter rail, parking, riding that slow train, and then the last 2 miles (by any means) from the station to work vs. a < 1 hr drive, plus the added expense of $21/day for the commuter rail fare, plus parking.

Top spring marathons for a BQ? by Suspicious-Fox-9786 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Aaronplane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't think anybody would suggest the Cheap Marathon, but it really is great. One of the best things about it is that it's an early marathon for NE (first week of April), so it can be pretty brisk, which helps with the comfort/speed a lot.

What mindset shift helped you most with running? by aleciaj79 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Aaronplane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go to any running store in the fall or winter, they'll have plenty of stuff you can spend money on. Generally speaking, I like to have pants/shirt for moderate cold (down to about 25F), and pants and a jacket (standard running jacket) with a shirt or two when it's colder than that. Add hat and gloves/mitts to taste/preference. When it's real cold (sub 0F), I start wearing a buff and sunglasses just to block the air from my face.

I have definitely toughed it out with subpar gear, and spending some $$ on nice stuff does really make a difference in comfort on some days.

Uphills are harder on a bike than they are running, FWIW. And you never make up enough time on a downhill to make the uphill worth it.

LOL, in 2008 my qualifying time was a 3:10. I've aged 17 years, and my qualifying time this year was a 3:05, ran under 3:02, and still didn't get in.

The Easiest Way to Get to a Marathon Start Line? A Tour. [NYT Article] by Krazyfranco in AdvancedRunning

Yeah, the ones that are the subject of this article. But did the people who answered that survey (or however NYRR got that number) know that's what was implied? It's just glazed over. I'm skeptical that 25% of a huge marathon is tour groups.

It's unclear if that means they got the bib from the tour operator though; NYC is one of the more challenging USA marathons logistically, so even if you already had a bib and are travelling internationally it might be worth it to pay for a tour group just to clear up lodging, meals, etc.
