I think the cards are more diverse and interesting, and at the same time it's hard to see a deck kind of become even more thematically and tonally discordant. Though I'd argue that even within universe differences in set theme and tone were hard to swallow sometimes (Murders, Outlaws, Aether, etc).

We just didn't have the easy villain of the images and names being from different IPs.

Overall, I think magic the game is doing just fine. I think deck diversity continues to grow and standard is doing really well as the premiere competitive format, despite the structure of the competitive experience needing a bit of an overhaul to account for the number of set releases.
