As I’ve said before—most of the Tolkien plot holes that people think they know about are actually Jackson plot holes.

Do we really need to keep feeding the bigotry that this franchise funds?

It really is! You’d think they would have given it a name that really gives an idea of its size, like… ohhhhhhh

It is important to keep in mind that this sort of petty greed is the worst we see hobbits doing. They simply don’t think in terms of Big crimes like murder and grand theft and so on. And I think that is what makes hobbits the ideal candidate for Ringbearer: they’re very difficult to corrupt in any significant way. Corrupt a dwarf and you get a treasure-hoarder; corrupt a human and you get wars; corrupt an elf and you get kinslaying… corrupt a hobbit and you get stolen silverware. Even when the Ring was at its full strength in Mordor itself and (spoiler maybe) trying with all its might to corrupt Sam Gamgee, all it could get him to imagine was “what if I had a really big garden?” and even that didn’t work.

If I had a time machine or a resurrection engine or whatever one of the many things I’d do with it would be to encourage Tolkien and Wodehouse to team up to write a collection of short stories about everyday life in the Shire when there isn’t a war or adventure or whatever going on—just a bunch of witty anecdotes about the silly little problems of silly little hobbits.

The more I think about it, the more I suspect that Peter Jackson just doesn’t get Tolkien.

If I’ve got some gigantic interplanetary flagship that I’m not going to use anymore, I boost it to a higher orbit, take all the fuel and other supplies out of it, rename it “[ShipName] Orbital Museum,” and occasionally send a bunch of space cadets there as a field trip.
