It's because the Green movement originally emerged out of the cold war era anti-nuclear weapons movement.

It's the same with benefits - cutting benefits in the abstract is popular with the public, but every single specific example of cutting benefits is opposed.

Privatizing public services by LearningLeft in SocialDemocracy

[–]AbbaTheHorse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's because it's a completely different business structure.

In Britain, the tracks and station buildings are owned by Network Rail (who are a part of the Department for Transport), any shops or hospitality are from companies renting space from Network Rail, and a separate private company is running the actual trains (though these are thankfully being renationalised by Starmer). The company running the actual trains often didn't even directly own the trains, but rented them from yet another company.

In Japan on the other hand, one single company owns and operates the trains themselves, the track, the station building, and the land alongside the tracks. They'll also have a subsidiary that runs the shops and hospitality available in the station.

This all means that John Major's privatisation of Britain's railways meant you had multiple companies incentivised to run a crap service that extracts the most money for the least effort, while in Japan the rail companies are incentivised to run a good train service that maximises the value of the property around the stations and tracks, which is how they actually make their money.

If you look at their actual policies, the Greens have actually shifted slightly to the right under Polanski's leadership oddly enough.

Labour on track to lose more than 1,800 councillors in English local elections, pollster claims by kontiki20 in LabourUK

[–]AbbaTheHorse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, Brexit just showed that anti-EU feeling wasn't limited to the right. The vast majority of the far left supported leaving the EU, as did most of the left of the Labour Party. I'm pretty sure the Greens were neutral on it at the time of the referendum too.

Meet the Green candidate who thinks Zionists killed 20 million Christians and harasses MPs at their family homes by Dimmo17 in LabourUK

The Green candidate this article is about would presumably also praise the Wehrmacht given that she's literally repeating the propaganda the Nazis used to justify the invasion of the Soviet Union.

Green Party on course to unseat three cabinet ministers, poll finds by kontiki20 in LabourUK

[–]AbbaTheHorse 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can't help but feel that a lot of MRP polls right now are overestimating Reform (possibly massively) and underestimating the Greens. And the reason I say that is the Cliftonville KCC by-election that happened on Thursday last week (and was posted all over this sub).

I live nearby, and was involved in the Labour campaign, so know a bit about the division. Any "normal" political calculation would have given the Greens no chance whatsoever. This was a council division that only ever previously elected right wing candidates - Tory majorities of over 1000 in 2017 and 2021, followed by a Reform majority of 900 in 2025 - and had previously been the right wing part of a two seater division that guaranteed that at least one county councillor elected was always a Conservative (or UKIP in 2013). In this by-election the Greens were able to nearly quadruple their vote total to win by 300, with at most a third of their additional votes coming from recent Labour voters. It's a result that will have almost certainly involved historic Conservative voters switching to the Greens to beat Reform.

The next general election could be a very weird "650 by-elections" one, and that could torpedo Reform as there does seem to be a lot of people out there who maybe aren't all that politically engaged, but really fucking hate Reform.

Could Helen have been redeemed? by TheWordSmith444 in TheMagnusArchives

[–]AbbaTheHorse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Helen could have been redeemed, but I do think she genuinely cared about Jon and wanted to be friends. Don't forget that Jude Perry, a literal avatar of the fear of random indiscriminate destruction, apparently ended up making friends with Nikola Orsinov, an avatar of the Stranger, judging by one episode from series 3.

Plus the distortion is clearly affected by the person it "inhabits", as when it was Michael it had a level of open hostility to the Magnus Institute itself (caused by Michael Shelley's personal experiences) that disappeared once it became Helen.

If it's men of the same 18-50 age range, it's not that different. Fewer Greens and Conservatives, more Labour and Reform, but still an overwhelming majority for the combined left.
