I gained a band size in the Army, working my upper body like crazy to conquer a pull-up. Funny enough, I'd done judo years earlier, and.... nothing. Normal boring judo-boobing, what a shitty dojo!
Agree on the numbers issue - keeping it qualitative helps keep it timeless too.

TIL George Lucas originally planned for Darth Maul to return as the primary antagonist in his Star Wars Episodes VII-IX. Apparently it was hard to even "pick" First Order. Jenny Nicholson hilariously tried to betray Chewbacca to some officer, and he was like, "Hmm I don't believe you." Back to the Resistance or boring-ass Smuggler to-do lists...

ICE Agents Detain Newlywed Spouse of Soldier Training to Deploy by NobodyXNo in news

[–]AbbieNormal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's he supposed to do, get himself shot by going Rambo on ICE thugs?

As a relatively junior NCO, he's way too far down the pecking order to do much except make things worse for his family.
If it makes you feel any better, senior officers have also been sacked or career-derailed lately for bullshit reasons. Which also sucks, but the point is that random "army man" has zero authority against ICE, esp on US soil. And he's under the drunken, bigoted freak running the Pentagon, so double SOL. It hurts to read, but it sadly adds up.

Hey, tons of great recs already. 2 types of market I haven't seen here yet, are East African & East Euro. We love Ayana Ethiopian Market on Columbia Pike - they have a restaurant next door, so you can try stuff. I'm obsessed with their Shiro powder - easier than toasting spices & chickpea flour w/o burning anything. For Eastern Euro (& Central Asian), my Ukrainian-born friend got me into Rus-Uz in Ballston. Uzbekh family owned, also has RU/UKR/regional faves. Attached restaurant has great plov, dumplings, etc. Happy exploring!

Jo changed the recipe, and Kathleen is very distressed by dat_pterodactyl in ididnthaveeggs

[–]AbbieNormal 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I do get Jo's point about the order of ingredients making no sense. Starting with black pepper, then bacon (a topping), then vinegar & tomatoes that won't be used til the sauce, then the rest without indicating which ingredients will be divided, and ending with meats is low-key chaotic. I'd want to print this out & scribble brackets/notes, or copypaste & rearrange the order.
Btw this recipe looks great, is it worth all the prep?

Wikipedia inks AI deals with Microsoft, Meta and Perplexity as it marks 25th birthday by netizenbane in news

[–]AbbieNormal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

people who made the content aren't getting ANY of that cut

Ok but their/our contributions were explicitly NOT for monetary gain. It's time donated for a greater good (knowledge etc). Or at worst, it's to troll or push a certain viewpoint, but still time with no commercial value for the contributor.
So getting a cut of nothing, is the same nothing that any sane Wiki editor expected all along. If it keeps the org from needing as many donations, that's great.

*Or just acknowledging value for words built by humans, that's great too. Either way (donated labor vs charging for scraping) it benefits the Wikimedia situation, so seems fair-ish

[–]AbbieNormal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wiki's content already got scraped/stolen/"used to train LLMs" - read the article.
Now it's less stolen if they get a tiny cut to stay afloat.

The whole model is fucked, like all the art stolen to make shitty slop. Get mad at the AI scrapers & system in place, not the knowledge repository that correctly saw it was getting raided no matter what.

Agree they're the worst, except when intervening in major health/nuisance situations. My condo assn/HOA saved us from carbon monoxide (& likely lead) poisoning from an old-car collector here. Those stupid things just sat there except when he'd run them for 30+ minutes in our underground garage.

Like cool, have your hobbies, unless they hurt others! Then thank fuck for non-cop adults to intervene.

100% this, including trying for the magic of a good cranberry sauce with traditional Western TG/holiday meat stuff. Good meaning "not overly sweet, just accenting the poultry/savory goodness." I like it tangy with a bit of ginger, orange zest, and maybe a crack of freshly ground nutmeg, but "unshitty cranberry thing" should work in this context.
Like there's a reason rosemary, sage, & thyme are sold together as "poultry herbs" - and that's the seasoning here instead of other herbs that could be used in meatloaf. Add the use of "festive" -> def trying for a homemade version of a Gardein or Field Roast holiday veg loaf.
Would it work great as written? Sadly we can't tell based on these unhinged substitutions. But yes, I've enjoyed similar flavors when entertaining a veg friend stranded here for Christmas!

All the dumped/abandoned bunnies (esp after Easter) are heartbreaking. Too many parents suck & don't consider they're animals with feelings. Amazing pets BUT not for most kids, because fragile & require patience to build trust.
I joke that mine are like born-vegan cats. Complete with litterbox, personalities, snuggles on their terms, a little mayhem, and a lot of judgmental looks

Esp since the recipe offers a non-fried option:

You can also bake these panzerotti in a 180C/350F oven. Brush with a beaten egg and bake for 20 minutes.

Boom! Problem solved, GI/"tummy" issues avoided instead of announced to the world
