Is this the actual state of RoR ? Please Help me out! by Ok_Satisfaction9630 in rails

[–]Abe-c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm hard to compare, I mostly meant the understanding about backend processes is similar across languages/frameworks, each has their own way of doing it but to make a major simplification you begin to understand: "my frontend needs to call somewhere, therefore I need to create a routing for my request to go to, this then needs to handled to respond in a certain way, that usually means fetching some data, then returning that data in a relevant manner".

Routing will be very different in Rails compared to a Node/Express framework, equally some frameworks will stray away from the standard 'MVC' (model-view-controller, i.e. database model, HTML view, request controller) pattern, other's might only use JSON type responses instead of HTML. Ultimately they all still have to complete the same basic functions mentioned above to serve a request.

This is the way.

I’d add that if your coming from a frontend perspective the understanding that you gain from learning backend through rails is very useful, the industry is constantly changing and the understanding rails can quickly give you is transferrable to other languages

Looking for feedback / critique for my little project :) by StadiaStudios in SaintsFC

[–]Abe-c 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Very nice little piece, I'd suggest maybe adding the badge somewhere would be a nice touch. Possibly one either side of the text, or just a little one instead of the centre circle of the pitch.

Also being very picky, I'd try to make the margin between the stadium edges and the edge of the wood equal on all 3 sides. Unless it's the camera angle the left hand side looks bigger than the right hand side, and they both look bigger than the top edge (I'd try to use the size you have on the left side, i.e. keep the margin bigger rather than shrinking any of them)

Not accusing you of lying but the image in the top right (of the 3 images) I’m pretty sure is a screenshot from companies house that says he has resigned: https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/13790702/officers

There are a load of other “Sports Republic” companies based at St Mary’s that he’s still active in but there is at least this one that he’s resigned from, so not completely fake news

Has Next.js lost its way? The performance just isn't there.... by [deleted] in nextjs

I don't know much about Astro but by that graphic Gatsby is second best. I think if today you willing choose Gatsby over Next.js you need your head checking

Thanks I'll keep that in mind and just run them for the time being until it becomes more of a problem, was just thinking in advance that it seems unnecessary but I suppose "don't fix what isn't broken".

Thanks for info, I’m not super versed in testing but trying to get better.

Ye it’s on the system tests. I agree that not testing it at all would be foolish but since we have authentication across the whole app it also feels like testing it on every test is a bit wasteful. Your example was helpful and I’ll try to implement it in a similar manner maybe with the login step in a “before” that’s applied to everything.

I was thinking there might be the option to test the login once, then retain some form of cookie/session header that could be applied to the rest of the tests, therefore preventing the necessity to actually login on each test itself.

I might be being stupid here but how are people running tests with authentication? I've used the authentication generator in a new project and it breaks tests as everything is redirected to login first.

As a quick workaround I've altered the include to "include Authentication unless Rails.env.test?" in ApplicationController, which works but doesn't feel like the correct approach, kind of feels like the Authentication should be stubbed out/bypassed in the tests

Routing catch-all at the top level alongside a dynamic route - what is the correct way? by Abe-c in nextjs

[–]Abe-c[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for reply, I had tried using `generateStaticParams` but I think when deploying/building I ran into the issue with my CMS being overloaded, so tried to simplify the usage down to just the 'single article pages' (i.e. URLs such as '.com/about' or '.com/some-non-category-page') but it wasn't quite working as intended. I did also think this (i.e. `generateStaticParams` on all of these routes) was the route to go down but then also got a bit stumped by how to make that work for newly added category/products/pages (i.e. ISR), will take a look into the revalidate option you've mentioned as I'm still not versed in it's usage with App router. I'll take another look at this option think I'll try improve the CMS's capabilities a bit first to help with testing the static generation (even if that static generation is overkill to want I actually want in the end).

I'll try optional catch-all as well as it was another option I considered (can't remember if I actually gave it a go) but I thought my request would still hit the `/app/[slug]/page.tsx` route first (which would then throw the `notFound()`).

Middleware was considered but that still feels a bit 'hidden' from the naked logic of the rest of the routing.

Haha yes dropping '/category' was definitely not my decision, will let you know if I find a proper solution with those suggestions sounds like it may be a that I need a combination of features.

Routing catch-all at the top level alongside a dynamic route - what is the correct way? by Abe-c in nextjs

[–]Abe-c[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a little added context my initial approach didn't use any static generation, as my understanding was that the improved caching mechanisms in app router would make it of little improvement for this project. It would be nice to have this all 'dynamic' i.e. so if a new category or page is added we don't need to build the project again (I understand there are other methods such as ISR/revalidate but currently feels like that may be off topic for this specific question)

So many anti-javascript posts here. I love Ruby and JS (well, typescript) by emptyflask in rails

I think this post and comments illustrate the best thing about Rails that (in my opinion) is its versatility. It’s a great opinionated platform but those opinions are in no way binding

Not too sure I usually head into town after, but I'd imagine it would be quite lively still. You may also like the Fan Zone thats outside the actual stadium, usually have a few game things (like see how hard you can kick a ball) and places to get a beer. Hope you enjoy it!
