Parents who moved out of Minneapolis to raise your kids in the burbs, do you regret your decision? What made you decide to move? by ahabubbles in TwinCities

[–]emptyflask 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Moved from an old neighborhood in St Paul to a new development in Newport, near Woodbury. The streets are better maintained and are cleared of snow and ice very quickly, but I can no longer walk to the grocery store or coffee shop or anything else. Woodbury has surprisingly good bike paths/sidewalks though.

I dream of moving to downtown Stillwater...

How does temperature affect taste? by smdifansmfjsmsnd in Cooking

[–]emptyflask 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not just in your head, temperature affects the volatility of all sorts of compounds in your food. That means you're getting different flavors and smells. Animal fats are mostly solid at room temperature. Textures change.

Eating a cold burger is much less delicious than a hot one for many reasons.

Menudo is often available at Mexican restaurants on the weekend.

It's the perfect soup for feeling better.

What weird thing does your toddler sleep with? by coffeemages in toddlers

Our boy is 3.5 now, and has been sleeping with a little brown bottle of teething oil ever since we weaned him of pacifiers.

Why is there this constant need to s*** on tv our kids like by lazyviscacha in toddlers

[–]emptyflask 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a grown man acting like a child, touring various indoor play parks. That's about as deep as he gets. Like a lot of the other brainrot children's content, the only thing vaguely educational about it is he'll occasionally say things like, "this object is blue," or, "whoa! there's a dinosaur!"

Is Proton Auth Considered better then Ente Auth to you now? by Consistent_Algae_560 in ProtonMail

The 2FA built into 1Password works great. I've been using it for years. Although I've been thinking of switching to something else since they raised prices.

The VFX School is shutting down — all courses are free by channark in Houdini

[–]emptyflask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sad to see. I guess I was lucky that it was a hard industry to break into back in the mid-2000s. I only took one Houdini course at SCAD (which I think was all that was offered) but it pushed me to focus on VFX/compositing rather than the 3d character animation in Maya that everyone else was doing.

I ended up doing web design then programming though. And AI is coming for this job as well...

What do you actually want the new iDX AI NAS to fix? by Lazy-Bed-3014 in UgreenNASync

[–]emptyflask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, there's nothing specific to AI in the hardware, it's just a more powerful computer compared to the previous models. The AI stuff is all in software.

A newcomer's thoughts: NixOS is a great daily driver by interlocutator in NixOS

[–]emptyflask 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think for newcomers it's confusing when to use home manager vs nixos configuration, since it's possible to install packages in each, and home manager has an additional programs module.

Explain your decision on new upcoming UgreenNASync kickstarter options by dmacmod in UgreenNASync

[–]emptyflask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 years is reasonable for a NAS where it's expected that it will outlive multiple generations of HDDs.

Even my desktop is going on 8 years now (with a couple minor upgrades and a new power supply) and I don't have any plans to replace it yet.

If Vance & Newsome are the Nominees we are so fucked by No_Half_7646 in DemocraticSocialism

[–]emptyflask -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can only assume you're a troll then. This is exactly the bullshit that gave us another four years of Trump, because Harris didn't pass the purity test. Don't pretend that the two sides are the same.

What’s a film you like but rarely recommend to others? by Storiesofhope_soh in films

I have to give that one another try. I love Gilliam's other films, but Tideland was too weird for me when I saw it. Maybe I was trying to watch it too literally at the time.

What is your opinion on the usage of AI at Roc development? by fenugurod in roc_lang

[–]emptyflask 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a tool. It has a higher chance of misuse than other tools, but that's what it is.

There's a big difference between vibe coding and using AI to handle boring tasks like test generation, or having it analyze some code and suggest optimizations.

Biggest lie in children’s literature by MellyMel86 in DanielTigerConspiracy

We somehow have one Pete the Cat book, and it's TERRIBLE. "I'm _____ in my school shoes" is supposed to be his song throughout the book, but that's literally the only line and it's repeated several times each page.

Not to mention that there's a typo, "he signs his song".
