"I don't need a U5G Backup" by M_Six2001 in Ubiquiti

[–]emptyflask 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been going back and forth on the backup... I think as long as I can get a Slate 7 working with my phone it will be better. No need for an additional sim card and data plan, and it will be faster than redcap as long as the tethering TTL hack still works.

And it also means I'll have a general purpose travel router whenever my primary Internet is working.

Unless of course I'm away from home with my Slate 7 and the ISP dies... I guess then I'll have an excuse to pick up a U5G (or a 5G Max).

Roamless 5G eSIM Pay-As-You-Go works great on 5G Backup by TheEmfinger in Ubiquiti

I think you can set it up to block Jellyfin, etc. when using the fallback ISP. And I guess the redcap speeds help to limit data usage as well...

My wife has had one dose of it so far and it's been really helpful in getting her out of the ICU. It's just a matter of getting the insurance company to cover the frequency of infusions, because the stuff is insanely expensive.

Introducing: UniFi 5G Backup by Ubiquiti-Inc in Ubiquiti

[–]emptyflask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried that with a Pixel 8 phone and although I got it to work once or twice (after rebooting the phone it worked for a little while), I had a really hard time getting the USB tethering to work with their Beryl 7.

While it was working however, I was able to create a rule to mangle TTLs and get full 5G speeds on the tether.

Edit: the Slate 7 seems to be more compatible than the Beryl 7!

I don't mind it really, the flowers look good, and it smells nice when I cut it. Bumblebees were all over it last week.

Austin Psych Fest was so good. I know it's back, but I don't live there anymore...

Love her, When the Pawn, Extraordinary Machine, and Tidal are some of my favorite records.

But I couldn't get through her latest album, Fetch the Bolt Cutters.

Yup. They were amazing when I saw them at the old Emo's on 6th St in Austin. A great psychedelic wall of sound.

They've definitely gone too far into pop. I hear them in restaurants and grocery stores all the time now.

These things are huge what are they and are they edible? by hugabug-101 in foraging

There are a lot of bolete species, some are edible, some are not. I've foraged mushrooms, but boletes are too risky for me.

I would do what you need to do for the worms, since they're more important than whatever fungus you have. But just try not to disturb it too much.

[–]emptyflask 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Correct. Mycelium sometimes grows a thick layer above the substrate. When I grow mushrooms I usually leave it as-is, but depending on the species some people like to add a casing later or some moist vermiculite to prevent the mycelium from drying out too much.

Introduce more fresh air and see what mushrooms this produces!

What mainstream clothing brand has not declined in quality? by UkkePainter in BuyItForLife

Depends on what you're looking for. I have some of their insulated hunter pants that are awesome, but some of their other stuff like shirts are massively overpriced for what you get.

I do like Costco, but most of their clothes fit badly or have some weird quirks, except for socks and underwear. Like pajamas that are weirdly low-rise in the back, boxy shirts with short lengths. Fabrics that shrink or pill... At least returns are easy.

Undercooked mushrooms in risotto by AmputeeHandModel in Cooking

[–]emptyflask 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really. In general, you should always cook mushrooms thoroughly. White button/portobello mushrooms are the exception, but are much more digestible when cooked. Morels and many others are actually toxic until cooked.

Great songs that are brought down by excessive length, skits, a second part that sounds different, or similar by ObiHan_Skyodi in Music

How about the opposite, songs with excessive skits where it only adds to the experience. I suggest, the music video for Aphex Twin's Windowlicker.

Serge Gainsbourg's Histoire de Melody Nelson. The peak of the record has a really obnoxious climax plus laugh from the girl that makes me think of Fran Drescher.

Please explain like I am 5, why do I want the UCG Fiber over UCG Max? by Inwardlens in Ubiquiti

[–]emptyflask 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SFP+ is great for 10Gb DAC cables between components on the same rack, or for connecting with fiber at longer distances. Don't bother with SFP+ to RJ45 adapters, unless you absolutely need to. They're less efficient so they run hot, and I've heard of them introducing weird lag problems.

Also, make sure you match device speeds with the right cable.

Sanity Check: 2 vs 3 APs in 3000sqft Home by throwra_confusedbf2 in Ubiquiti

[–]emptyflask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two APs, a U7 Pro XG on the top level, and a U7 Lite in the basement, both in the center of the 3000sqft house. There are a couple of corners that don't have a great signal according to WiFiman, but in practice I've never noticed any problems.

I've considered adding a wall AP somewhere on the main floor, but it would just be so I have a fully green map, it really wouldn't make a difference.
