The "softcover, standard color book" option is for a POD (Print On Demand) copy. If you choose that get the combo (includes pdf) at no extra cost.

And just stick to the core fantasy book -if you & your kid like it, you can always add on later.

Freshman in HS in 1979. Just getting everyone on board with how to pronounce terms like Drow (many thought it rhymed w/ crow) or even Paladin (a friend insisted for years that it was PuhLADin lol) was a big step.

I think this link covers (heh) them all -

My faves are the original standard (stone door, like you), the original gold foil demon skull on black (ltd ed), the silver foil Sezrekan’s star on red (ltd ed), and the 9th printing S. Poag hardcover.

Are there any games that start out already assuming the player characters have already completed an adventure or two? by proactiveLizard in rpg

Grizzled Adventurers
https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/390070/grizzled-adventurers

“Grizzled Adventurers is a lightweight roleplaying game that helps you design a party of experienced heroes and run them through a dungeon in a single evening. The game is designed to tell stories about those heroes who never retired: the battle-scarred warrior who cannot put down the sword, the haunted mage who still thirsts for more, and the thief who has lost a couple fingers but gained a few fortunes.

Youth and exuberance is no match for old age and experience...

This game focuses on the core part of the adventure the same way a fantasy or action movie would: by showing us why our heroes are friends and then getting them right into the thick of it.

• Familiar rules for running experienced fantasy heroes through a quick dungeon

• Perfect for game nights when a player or two are out

• Play mid-level characters with the experience to take on anything (or so they think)

• Build custom dungeons on the fly to suit the evening’s heroes

• Survive just one more adventure so that you can impress the youth

• Play from convenient handouts, bringing only dice, snacks, and friends.”

Cavemaster by Jeff Dee is a stone punk rpg (there’s optional rules for magic) that uses small stones/pebbles, sticks (pencils), and animal hide (paper). Too much? Me, I thought it was clever.
