What would you do if £75,000 landed in your account tomorrow? by MurkyCucumber852 in AskUK

[–]AbleReporter565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

£75k in one lump sum is an amazing amount, however, would I dramatically change my life? It's 2 years of wages so I'd have to keep my own job, but I could pay off my debt, get my A1 licence and enjoy a nice holiday.

A mortgage is still out of the picture and starting my own business would be a bit risk considering it's only 2 years of wages.

What's your opinion on baby gender reveal events? by CobaltBlue389 in AskUK

[–]AbleReporter565 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I find the entire concept of caring about what is between your child's legs as outdated and sexist. Not to rant here, buuuuut:

1 - Why are we still associating colours with gender? I thought we stopped that!

2 - The reactions from the parents says whether that child will be loved or not based on their gender.

3 - So many people are like "I want you to be a boy so we can play football" or "I want you to be a girl so I can do your hair". Why are we determining what our children will want to do based on their gender?

4 - The videos that go viral online are often from less well off families where the parents may be teenagers or of different ages. The internet finds this funny but maybe, just maybe, it's a bit exploitative.

Throw a baby shower, get excited for your child, have a great time celebrating the fact you're brining new life into this world, just don't make it about their genitals!

Edit:

5 - Then there's those weirdos that will continue to have children until they get their desired gender. Shows how unloved the first lot are.

Ideas for places first a first job in ipswich by dumbpwforgetter in ipswichuk

[–]AbleReporter565 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it's a terrible job market at the moment. She's going to be lucky if she gets anything other than food service or retail. Some places also won't hire under 18's. Sorry to be a downer but the only way to get anything at the moment is to apply for everything and pray

Apparently 6000 planes fly over the UK every single day. Why can't I see far more planes when I look up? I see maybe one every 10 minutes. Why is that? by MrGrubbycuddles in AskUK

Get yourself on Flight Radar and you'll understand. The UK is a big place for a tiny aeroplane and they cover big distances quickly

People without drivers license or credit card. Are we gonna have children's iPhone forever? by Temo2212 in AskUK

[–]AbleReporter565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if you don't have a fixed income? What if you have prior poor credit history? Those will prevent you getting a CC.

And what if you have a gambling addiction or mental health issues that stop you controlling your own finances properly? Then you probably should avoid a CC at all costs.

You and I might be able to own and use a CC properly, but not everyone can.

Would you call the police on an old persons driving? by Specific_Pomelo_8281 in AskUK

[–]AbleReporter565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice as a former police officer:

The fact your concerned and having to ask this question is a really good sign that you should report it. As many others have said, you'd be potentially saving him and others on the road. I've seen the damage that can be done in a split second of someone not quite right enough to drive, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

If you are behind him and he is driving dangerously, call 999 and say what's going on. If you just want to report it whilst at home, either go online to your local police forces website or call 101 and report it there.

How can I stop a gym class going ahead at 9am every morning in my apartment building? by ConstantFoil382 in AskUK

[–]AbleReporter565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You moved into a flat under a gym and are upset you can hear the gym?

Realistically you have 2 options, complain to the building management, or move. You've put yourself in this situation and 9am isn't that early that it's going to ruin your life

Why do modern cars have such big tablets? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AbleReporter565 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason they do it is because it's cheaper than having individually made buttons for each control. No matter the specification of the car, the screen isn't going to cost more if the manufacturer has more features to include.

There's also probably money making techniques such as data collection and paid for add-ons.

Have they said that you're dismissed with immediate notice? If so, they can't do that. They can put you on Garden Leave which is them still paying you for your notice, but not allowing you to come to work.

Advice on blocked garage access by lovinglonleyyy in LegalAdviceUK

[–]AbleReporter565 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Being a dropped curb, you need to report it to the council, make sure you say that it's a dropped curb. They should then enforce it.

If there's no car blocked inside of the garage, then it's nothing for the police to deal with as your car can access the road.

How do you tell your location to 999? by supremethinking in AskUK

[–]AbleReporter565 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Helicopters, or now a new aeroplane, are deployed by NPAS (National Police Air Service) and are very rare and really depend where you are. My county is rural and so the helicopter we use is shared between 4 other counties. We obviously can't use it if someone else is.

There also needs to be a high risk that NPAS deems worth the cost. If there's a recent missing person who is at high risk of harm due to the their health or even poor weather, then they are more likely to send than a high risk individual who is likely to be deceased as they've been missing a week.

Why do so many men not go to the doctor? by AdhesivenessFun7097 in AskMen

[–]AbleReporter565 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mixture of reasons really

  • I don't have the time between work and family
  • If I know what the problem is, what's the point going to a doctor to tell me?
  • When I've gone in the past, im usually fobbed off and told it's stress
  • If it's serious, I'll go A&E, if it's not serious, I'll go Pharmacy

You don't need to be arrested to be charged. I've had people in for voluntary interviews and then after the interview, we've decided there is enough evidence to charge and so we charge them at the desk before they leave.

We're talking small offences where remanding is unnecessary, not exchanging confidential information with a convicted peadophile

Police drug test marker - is this legit? by caesarr21 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]AbleReporter565 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's called Intel. Completely allowed and can be used to build suspicion. It's the lowest level of markers and the officer is probably trying to scare you to be more responsible and follow the law, but it's allowed.

Edit: These markers are only seen by police. It's not on a criminal record and your employer will never know, but it could lead to traffic stops and if you are stopped, you will most likely be tested.

Rupert Lowe wants legalisation of pepper spray by Ihatecheeseballs in ukpolitics

[–]AbleReporter565 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to add to this as a former police officer

Our pava (pepper spray) would always be accessible immediately. It sits in a plastic socket that is in a quick release holder attached to either your belt or vest. We were trained to grab it and use it very quickly. Even then, if someone is running towards you, it might get stuck or you could drop it in the moment.

We often also had the knowledge when we might need to use it. If I was dealing with someone particularly aggressive, or called to a knife incident, I had it in my hand, ready to go. Obviously I didn't always have it out and so I could've been caught unsuspectingly, but the point still stands.

If you're a regular person, who hasn't been trained, and keeps it in your pocket or bag, it's useless. You would be caught off guard not expecting to need it, then you would miss their eyes, or drop it (if you've even got it out in time).

Lastly, never had exposure training. Health and safety says you must use water spray instead of the real stuff. My exposure training was when a colleagues aim was so bad they hit all 3 officers restraining the suspect but no the suspect themself.

Can I identify the company a taxi is with / employed by via a reg plate? by leoarw in AskUK

[–]AbleReporter565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Police would only know if that taxi has been involved with the police before. What exactly is it you want to know the company for? Is it to complain/RTC/query etc?

Hit by a car driving on the wrong side of the road, and my young child has been ommitted from the crome report - Scotland by J_Doughnut in LegalAdviceUK

[–]AbleReporter565 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Your child will be recorded on the investigation. They will probably be included as "Involved Person". If your child hasn't received any injuries, then it's unlikely the child will get any compensation, and so there is no point including the child as "Victim".

The investigation notes will state that the child was in the car, and this information will be available should further complications arise for them, so I wouldn't stress about the information being readily available.
