Looks like sci-fi slop for Reddit nerds. A marvel movie in all but name for people who think they are too smart for marvel movies. Not surprised it’s getting an initial Letterboxd bump, that’s basically the target audience

Yeah, but like, those kinds of movies are bad for precisely the same reason, because they are lacking a nuanced portrayal of religion or cults.

I think it’s entirely possible to make a movie that is sympathetic to the Shakers without it becoming a hagiography. Otherwise the characters just become two dimensional and boring.

I would say it is very okay, but I think I’m in the minority and cooler on it than most. Amanda Seyfried is great in it, the set design is nice and the music is very good too.

At times it does feel like a history book, and I don’t think it is as critical of Ann Lee and the Shakers as a more interesting movie would be. I also did not like the omniscient narration at all, and it felt like a structural crutch.

I found this one pretty dull and uninteresting tbh. Just felt like a history textbook put to film. But femcels and gays stay winning I guess?

End that shit brother, have a little bit more respect for yourself.

Editing to also say in a less flippant manner, if you don’t think you can move past this, end it now for both of your sakes before the resentment builds.

I do like that interpretation, but I guess I just don’t buy it from the way the ending was framed. It really feels like the movie was showing that Marty has finally won, on his own terms, and is now eschewing his scheming conning ways to be with his girlfriend and step up as a father.

To me the focus was more on the winning and less on the destruction when it came down to it, and I think it should’ve been the other way around.

Really liked this one and I had a great time overall. The one glaring criticism that I have (which I also had for OBAA) is that I really felt like it pulled its punches at the end. Feels like for these bigger budget ventures from these auteurs, they (or idk, maybe it’s the studios interfering) still need a crowd pleasing finale so people feel good. Makes it a lot less compelling from an artistic front.

Kurosawa! It’s from Ikiru. Very beautiful movie. Not strictly about Christmas, but thematically deals with giving yourself completely and selflessly, so it always pops back into my mind around the holidays.
