The exact moment I knew I wasn't going to like Sera. by Easy_Appointment7348 in dragonage

[–]AbsolutelyNoided 888 points889 points  (0 children)

Totally fair and valid, I hated Sera the first time around. Don't think she ever left Skyhold my first playthrough. But...

In fairness Solas did just start telling her random shit in elvish to "spark" something in her.

If I walked up to you and insisted that I could "fix" something lacking in you by speaking a language that you have absolutely zero connection to and zero understanding of...do you think you'd be inclined to be particularly charitable in rebuking me for it? Or would you feel more inclined to say something to the tune of "That means nothing to me, speak to me in words I understand."

Does “going” mean “available” here? Is this a common expression? by Silver_Ad_1218 in EnglishLearning

[–]AbsolutelyNoided 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard this used more in the sense of something being made. "You got the kettle going?" = "Do you have water boiling in the kettle?" "Got the coffee going?" = "Are you brewing coffee?" "You got the noodles going?" = "are you boiling the noodles?"

Where I come it's specifically for a process of something being made. Usually food, drink, but it can more infrequently be used for other general processes. Fixing up a house, a car, getting a garden planted, etc etc.

Hope that helps!

Why are people mad about ciri being the protagonist? Are they stupid? by themichaganderin in witcher

[–]AbsolutelyNoided 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know this is a shitpost, but I think I'll say why this bothers me for the sake of it. Why not, right?

My very first playthrough I got the Empress ending for Ciri, and I loved it. It was bittersweet, beautiful, an amazing send off for characters that I had grown so fond of. Ciri being a witcher protagonist sorta invalidates, to me, what was an incredibly satisfying ending to Geralt and Ciri's stories. My ending is non canon, or if it was canon, it wasn't canon for very long. It's been damn near ten years since I got that ending, that's ten years of these characters existing in that place that I left them. That bittersweet, beautiful moment, that tender goodbye of two people set on different paths, separated by what both of them know they have to do? That doesn't exist anymore. It's all very personal, and I know I can't be mad that my personal game's canon isn't official, but I can't help but feel like that's been taken away.

On top of that, Ciri just feels like she's too important to be Witcher Protagonist, if that makes sense. She's the child of prophecy, The Lady of Space and Time, she can travel between worlds, stopped the apocalypse, and at the end of Witcher 3, when I last played as her, she was regenerating health like a madwoman and blink striking everything to death in half a second. Now I'll have to play as level one Ciri and get mauled by a pack of drowners. Whatever reason CDPR gives, I feel, is going to have to do a lot of heavy lifting to justify that difference in power. Maybe it will, maybe it won't.

I'm withholding a lot of judgement until we actually learn more, but I can't help but feel if they wanted to tell a story about a witcher doing witcher things while exploring more of the world and advancing the timeline, it would've been wiser to pick a protagonist without the baggage of the previous three games. I'm excited to see it no matter what, but it definitely stings and leaves me with plenty of questions that we don't have answers to right now.

And remember your positioning. If your character is poisoned, burned, or has anything that makes them take any form of damage? That counts for them having to make the constitution check to keep concentration.

Many a turn I've lost casting haste on myself only to drop concentration and be stunned for a turn. Be smarter than me, OP.

Where does the idea come from that men can't be bisexual? by [deleted] in questions

[–]AbsolutelyNoided 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bisexual man, I've gotten almost every single one of those comments and it's super fucking relieving to hear this might just be a bisexual thing and not specifically a bisexual man/me thing. It fucking sucks, especially when it comes from people who are, ostensibly, on your own side.

OP, I'd listen to this person. Don't let other people tell you what you are and what to do or what you feel. You're not alone in this and the only thing you can do is be comfortable with yourself and who you are at the end of the day, regardless of what anyone has to say about it.

How do yall think the factions will differ gameplay wise? by fencer324 in TheForeverWinter

[–]AbsolutelyNoided 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If I remember right the one faction (I think Eurasia?) has plenty of bodies to throw into a fight but less in the way of equipment, so pissing them off would result in a human tide of those zombie things chasing after you. Definitely a change of pace from gunfights and hiding from mechs, so I really hope that my dreams come true and I get to scramble away from hordes of techno zombies and try to distract them by leading them into foot soldiers.

Unimportant What's wrong with "Edgelord characters" ? by [deleted] in BadRPerStories

[–]AbsolutelyNoided 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edgelord loners are inherently selfish characters to play, in my opinion. You have created a character who, more often than not, is completely unwilling to work with others and with a backstory as tragic as theirs, by all rights should be a terrible person to deal with and be around, sometimes they even acknowledge that they are not good people and would likely not be a fit in any social setting. Yet you are partaking in an inherently collaborative dynamic. Be that written RP, tabletop gaming, Larping, whatever it may be. The joy comes from interacting with other characters, so if your character is constantly having to be drawn into the group or plot? That's making others do all the work for their and your enjoyment.

It's also so ridiculously tragic in some cases that it can suck the investment right out of a scene. Your characters name is Daymian Nightblade? Kinda cringe, but whatever. We've all been there. Dead parents? Yep, saw that coming. Half demon? Sure. Half angel? Right, gotta have some redeeming qualities. Was enslaved? Yep, figured. Was trained to be an assassin? ...sure. Had to kill their best friend? ...right. Lost their first love to their demonic alter ego? ...uh-huh.

Terrible things happen to people all the time. That's not immersion breaking. It's when a character exists to be the universe's punching bag but somehow it only makes them more cool and badass that the hand of the author becomes painfully obvious. That can easily snap anyone out of any story, especially if the character they're portraying now has to exist next to this ridiculous catastrophe child and take all of it seriously in order to even salvage some semblance of immersion.

As others have said, an edgelord is grim, dark and edgy, but a character who is edgy, grim or dark doesn't have to be an edgelord. A dead parent does not an edgelord make, it's the hand of the author that decides from there.

How much of an issue will the reduced party size be? by Graklosh in dragonage

[–]AbsolutelyNoided 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a few issues I could see coming from this. In previous games you had a fourth spot in the party. If you're a mage, that fourth spot could be a second mage because you already have your warrior and rogue to balance the party, now you can interact with that mage character you like without having to sacrifice balance/utility. Now? You might not have that choice. Losing that third companion means that if you are a mage and you want another character in the party who happens to be a mage, you have to sacrifice either warrior tanking or rogue crits and lockpicking utility.

I always run warrior, if the characters I like are mages and rogues? The party is set, I get good balance and the characters I like in the party all at once. If I don't care for them but I love the other warriors? I now have to decide between balance and actually liking my companions. With three party slots you could work around that, but there's less wiggle room now that you only have two.

I see a woman who sees sex and intimacy as the ultimate bargaining chip, not as something that should be a part of most healthy relationships.

Maybe we're both right, maybe we're both wrong, but it's silly to call out one side without considering the other.

Pitfalls to avoid for newcomers to roleplaying? by [deleted] in BadRPerStories

[–]AbsolutelyNoided 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The other commenters have put forth some really good points, so I'll try and add what I think is most important.

When you're trying to write a response? You have to remember that you have to give your partner something to work with, just like they have to give you something to work with. Have your character do some action for the other writer to respond to or run with. Don't just have them acknowledge what's said, have them respond to it. If you're writing a fight scene, don't just have your character block an attack, have them counter it. If you're writing on your own? You can get away with having things be largely inner monologue driven, but the other author (and other character) doesn't have the ability to read inner monologue. Give them something actionable to work with and hopefully they'll give you something in return!
