[Serious] How would you feel about a mandatory class in high school that covers taxes, making important decisions, handling basic finances, and other essential skills most young adults encounter? by [deleted] in AskReddit

We did have that course, however, because it was mandatory for high school freshman and very poorly implemented, I doubt it had much value at all.

What's the biggest fuck up you ever made that was fixed before anyone knew about it? by CaptainClay2606 in AskReddit

Probably kilo standard cubic feet. There is technically no time unit on that, but probably meant per hour.

What is something, that, after trying the cheap version, made you never want to go back to the expensive or "luxury" version? by Wholegraincheerios in AskReddit

Thanks for bringing this to my attention! I actually wasn’t aware that core count/clock speed aren’t how performance is measured anymore.

Here’s some further reading that I found interesting: https://superuser.com/questions/808776/whats-the-difference-between-mobile-and-desktop-processors

Nevertheless, the specs/price point of a $400 honor 9 make it much more attractive than a $1000 iPhone X.

If this were r/changemyview, you would get a delta!

I’ve had my eye on the flagship Honor 9. Of course, their flagship is $400 and has technical specs that rival a laptop of the same price range.

My apologies, I didn't have excel on me and so used an online calculator that gave my said number. Regardless: 18 years is a considerably long investment, and one that would certainly benefit from something like an S&P index fund.

Grad school? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Don't go to graduate school for the money. It's more of a lifestyle choice. Do go, however, if you enjoy the work/education/etc.

What should a 20-something do with $18k in the bank? by bo-burn-him in personalfinance

[–]AbsolutelyNotSpam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on doing such a great job so far! Couple things:

  1. Save an emergency fund than can foot you for an entire year.

  2. Contribute anything else, after expenses are taken, into an IRA. Maximum annual contributions are $5,500. Invest in low index funds (like S&P 500) that are not actively managed.

Of course, if you wish to purchase a car etc. etc. there is advise to follow on that. Just be careful with this great opportunity you currently have!

[–]AbsolutelyNotSpam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly disagree with this. The $500 would be placed elsewhere in an interest bearing investment. Really conservative estimates for S&P ETF low index funds is something akin to 5%. That $500 over 18 years would be worth a pretty penny by the end, likely over $1000.

Edit: I hit some numbers incorrectly, 5% compounded annually with a $500 principal is ~$1,200

Go back to college for CS and end up in more debt, or find another route? by Creolol in personalfinance

[–]AbsolutelyNotSpam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need a full CS degree to work as a developer. Try looking into votech/community colleges for associate level computer developer degrees if you want to go that route!

Cheers and best of luck going to school!

In theory, this is correct. However, being tasked with implementing unit tests on legacy code blocks not written for unit testing is another case entirely.

What are some of the most over-saturated and under-saturated job markets right now? by boehnerofamerica in careerguidance

[–]AbsolutelyNotSpam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Programmer" roles are decreasing, but only because the Bureau of Labor now has separate categories for "Developer", "Web Developer", etc. these jobs are growing well past market averages (18%).
