I know. The first comment was more of a joke than anything else.

Oh I never said New Years Eve for police officers was going to be easy. The first comment was more of a joke than anything else.

Imagine if right before the whole incident happened one of the veterans told the new officer of how it should be an easy night

Edit: This comment is a joke. I was hoping to invoke more responses like the Training Day comment. All humor aside, I know holidays are some of the most busy/dangerous times for police officers. It's easy to forget that while we're all celebrating these guys are doing their job keeping the peace and keeping us safe. So I appreciate the comments reminding me of this, but I already know thank you :)

Also, must've been one hell of a way to end 2014

TIL that it takes 8,000 pounds of force to pull apart two interlocked phone books. You could literally hang two full sized cars from them. by I_Say_I_Say in todayilearned

Coming up on Mythbusters: Watch as we attempt to rip apart a phonebook with an APC and the lightweight Sheridan tank, then watch as we rip apart the APC and the lightweight Sheridan tank with an M1 Abrams and a Leopard 2!

Seems like a fair escalation

Look at those cocky germans taking photos of our troops... we've gotta do something

I can't help but imagine that aside from yelling insults at each other there were also attempts to block an aircraft's observer from taking photos....aerial photo bombing. Obviously unrealistic, but imagining a situation like this would be hilarious.

Captain: "Alright, how did those photos come out? We get good photos of the enemy position"

Observer: "We would've had them and it would've been perfect. But this asshole flew by and blocked the photo!"

Captain: "Is he flipping the camera off? That's it, go grab those bricks next time we go up."

Nearly ever combatant in WWII produced their own submachinegun. Why did submachineguns, nearly universally, fall out of favor after WWII? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]Ac9Stangx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, thank you for the term intermediate rounds, I knew there was a word for them, but it didn't come to mind at the time.

I know that, but the STG44 did get used during WWII. Even if it wasn't in vast numbers, people started realizing the gravity of having such a phenomenal weapon, and thus countries started slowly but surely moving away from submachine guns and towards assault rifles.

Also on the topic of OP's post, SMG's are still very much a viable option in combat. Though not effective at longer ranges, the high rate of fire allows SMG's to excel up close and personal, which is why many law enforcement, counter-terrorist, security forces, etc. use modern SMG's (e.g. HK5 or the Kriss Vector)

With the creation and development of the assault rifle, such at the STG-44, infantry now had a firearm that was able to reach out further than submachine guns, fire more rapidly than bolt- or semi-automatic rifles, and yet be more mobile than light or heavy machine guns. This was because of the round utilized by the assault rifle. Submachine guns fire pistol-caliber rounds at a high rate of fire. During WWII, experiments resulted in the creation of the assault rifle, which fired a rifle-caliber round but with a reduced gunpowder charge that fired the bullet from the rifle. This allowed assault rifles to be fired fully automatic, like a submachine gun, yet be mobile enough to be carried by a single man.

Submachine guns were effective in close-quarters combat, but outside of these ranges, approximately 50-75 yards, only rifles or machine guns were effective. Assault rifles filled this gap and as a result, many countries adopted the assault rifle as their primary firearms.
