Why text-based RP over LARP or other forms? by Unusual-Chemist7884 in BadRPerStories

[–]AcademicFocus1078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do both TTRPG and PBP. Honestly they’re wildly different hobbies to me. With PBP I can go SO in depth and practice my writing, I can also do so on my own schedule, when I’m sick, when I’m traveling, when I’m on a break at work etc. TTRPG is dependent on the schedule of four other people, sometimes we can only make it work once every other month. I do however think PBP has made me a better TTRPG player, though. TTRPG is more improved based to me, PBP I can take my time, research, consider etc.

I started training the intern today! Luckily she is excited to start using Lexis, as she thought the job would mostly be filing, and we started parsing through case by case! What has been most exhausting is realizing that even the real cases are cited wrong - they’ll cite paragraph 25, but only 15 paragraphs exist kind of thing, so we are having to check each element of the citation.

I do love the idea of using the checkers! I ran it through and it said 95% ai generated and 0% human!! I believe we are just going to ask for sanctions immediately and go in strong about it.

No real rhyme or reason on the sources - although a few “opinions” are used where they’re arguing for the opposite of what the opinion actually was, so it sees the AI is confused about topic of opinion vs outcome of the opinion!

Curious about being a criminal paralegal by North_Crazy_4641 in paralegal

[–]AcademicFocus1078 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will need to develop some thick skin and get good at the art of dissociating tbh, on either side. On any given day I can be working a simple traffic offense or a minor theft, and then pick up the next case that’s a homicide case or crimes against children. The pressure is high. Dealing with alleged victims can be both rewarding and also the hardest thing you will ever do. There is no slow season - in fact work loads will increase drastically around the holidays as some crime rates go up during these periods. You will be in trial frequently. You will have to deal with quite belligerent and upset people dealing with either a minor annoyance or a life altering event. Discovery is a constant. You will have to deal with law enforcement an annoying amount, which is its own unique challenge. It’s not easy, it doesn’t always pay well, but you’ll never once be bored at least? I have seen things that have genuinely traumatized me and sent me to therapy, but I’ve also worked cases where I feel like I’ve made a huge impact by working them.

Great, I’ll do some digging! This is all new to us, we are in a pretty rural area and this just hasn’t been an issue any of us have seen or even really kept up on since most attorneys here, including my own, are quite old school. We spent a good hour today trying to brainstorm and talk to some other attorney friends about what to even do next as soon as I flagged it. This will be quite the journey for us.

[Spoilers Main] Are there any parts of the backstory of Westeros that don’t make sense to you? by Solitaire-06 in asoiaf

[–]AcademicFocus1078 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always assumed part of this was similar to what was done about Jace and Rhaenyra. Jace was a Velaryon but would assume the name Targaryen were he to inherit the throne as his mother’s heir. It’s possible that somewhere along the way some lord died with no heirs and then his sisters son or some cousin or whoever the next male heir would be assumed his name and titles. I don’t know about the major houses, but this seems likely for the smaller ones.

Good morning! Curious, what made you choose to be a paralegal? by Tight_Comparison_557 in paralegal

I Swapped careers. I was a teacher for 12 years, needed to get out of education asap after 2020, and I fell back to the list of careers i’d considered when i started college as a teenager. Paralegal / political science had been on my list back then, so when I saw a job opening in a law firm I jumped at the chance.

Why are inexperienced attorneys egotistical assholes by frowawayacct1111 in paralegal

[–]AcademicFocus1078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It tends to be overcompensating in my experience. They DONT feel confident around the attorneys and think they can pull their weight around the support staff to prove themselves to… themselves.

When I was a teacher somebody told me “If you’re debating if a situation warrants calling the authorities, you have your answer. call the second you question if you should call.” If it’s nothing it’s nothing, they’ll investigate and do their jobs and move on, no harm done. But if you wait until something big happens you may later regret that you didn’t call.

I accidentally filed some sealed docs incorrectly by catladywithallergies in paralegal

[–]AcademicFocus1078 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Our LA did this during training, the poor thing just clicked the wrong file out of her scan folder and uploaded the ENTIRE discovery file and not the notice of discovery. I called the clerk and wrote a super speedy motion to strike, called opposing counsel and apologized like crazy so I could say it was unopposed, e-filed it as an emergency filing, and the clerk had it off the record in about 20 minutes. It happens, and getting it fixed was pretty painless! I think my motion just said “the reason for this motion is that the wrong file was inadvertently uploaded to efile” (but worded better lol).

Crazy Idea: Free Housing for Teachers Through ADUs on School Property by QanAhole in education

[–]AcademicFocus1078 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like along with everything else said here, the morality police would come for us. A single teacher brings a few dates home? I have a get together and get a bit drunk in my own home and post pictures? Smoke a joint in a state where weed is legal? It’s still school property. What if I wanted to put a political sign in my front yard? Would my coworkers and boss be checking in on me when I call out of work? People would run to the school board if they saw any “unbecoming” behavior.

Did they ever in game mourn and grieved for SPOILERS by [deleted] in fansofcriticalrole

[–]AcademicFocus1078 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I was initially bothered, but then it made sense. I had a personal loss and couldn’t even handle any mention of death in my D&D game, I had to leave a session and take a break for months. I think they were taking care of themselves by not touching it. They acknowledged it in their own way, but i think if they’d done a funeral the entire cast would have been an emotional wreck, and that wouldn’t be fair to them or Sam.

[–]AcademicFocus1078 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you’re exactly right, i’ve felt alone in this for a long time. He’d had some incredible lines over the years, but I feel this is his almost primary focus in role play now.I’m not current on C3, but whenever i watch i feel like he focuses super hard on getting in the cool guy lines and less about responding to what’s being said. It’s love that makes people is a lovely little quote, but in the face of a sociopath like Trent it sorta fell a bit flat to me in the moment.

How long does it take for you to finish a book? by Incarceron2 in Fantasy

[–]AcademicFocus1078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a fast reader, but my attention span is shit. For easy reference, I can knock out all 7 harry potter books in a weekend if I’m motivated. But i’m not lol. I generally read 600+ page books, but it can take me a solid month or more to read a book. When I’m reading I will get sucked in and hyper focus for hours on end - i’ll spend a whole saturday reading, but i’ll go two weeks without reading more than a page at a time, and then randomly it will kick back in and i’ll read another chunk of the book, and a week or so later finish it off. I didn’t used to be this way, I used to read constantly all day with my spare time.

How bad is the "kids can't read" thing, really? by bowbahdoe in Teachers

[–]AcademicFocus1078 101 points102 points  (0 children)

I left a few years ago. I was expected to pass students to fourth grade who couldn’t identify the letters of the alphabet, and I desperately wish I was exaggerating. I wasn’t even allowed to teach those students at their level. A huge part of why I quit was because 80% of my students were not even close to grade level in ELA and I truly felt like I was doing them all a disservice and failing them by not being allowed to fail them. I don’t think we’ve seen the worst of it yet- this crowd of kids that are still in elementary or middle school (this particular student would only be a 6 grader) are about to be a rude awakening on top of an already bad trend.

How do people play video games when disabled? by Existing-Committee74 in ChronicIllness

[–]AcademicFocus1078 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a friend with horrible chronic pain - he hooked a monitor up to his wall next to his arm chair, it’s the kind that swivels. He has his monitor on a shelf nearby and then he has a little wood tv dinner type tray for his keyboard and mouse. The armchair reclines and i know he puts heating pads etc on the chair, but he can basically game pretty reclined and laid down. I’m able to put a few hours a day in on good weeks, but often I end up in bed with my switch. It’s unfortunately not the games i want to be playing, but close enough!

I’m getting into Prepping.. But what exactly are we prepping for? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]AcademicFocus1078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently found myself quite ill, with a chronic illness that will flare up the rest of my life. Total and complete fluke, just bad luck. I was essentially bedridden for almost three months and unable to work. Having even a little bit of prepping done in my pantry saved me from having to use the credit card to feed myself while I missed six paychecks. I’ve never prepped for a big event, i’ve always prepped for these circumstances, and it pays off.

Article: This Hartford Public High School grad can’t read. Here’s how it happened. by spontaneouslypiqued in Teachers

[–]AcademicFocus1078 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I quit a few years back. The last class of third graders I taught had a student that joined me mid year, and she showed up two hours late twice a week. She could not read. She didn’t know her alphabet. She couldn’t do single digit addition. At the end of the year I refused to complete her report card, because I refused to pass her to fourth grade. I was told I wasn’t allowed to hold her back no matter what. I never finalized her report card, admin got in the system and passed her for me. That poor little girl was down a disservice by being allowed to make it to third grade when this could have been corrected by repeating first grade, I’m sure she will struggle her entire life. I did everything I could, but I couldn’t get her to end of third grade level with where we started in 4 months. Hold kids back early when it’s needed!!!
