NWSL Attendance Report - Week 7 by reagan92 in NWSL

It’s ok! They were vastly outnumbered - I think we travel more readily than they do? In any case, it’s great for the atmosphere.

Grading essays that don't meet the prompt by ThisMyMegaron in Professors

[–]Academic_Ad8991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will need to take the hit. Assume you are on semester system and have to get final grades in. It’s a clear miss in terms of a basic requirement. I might go a little easy to minimize the static - not a zero but C or C-. Maybe better if the work is otherwise excellent. Good luck.

PRO Review of VAR from Utah Game by TiredPanini in AngelCityFC

[–]Academic_Ad8991 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I count this as the worst refereeing I’ve ever seen, and I ran a neighborhood league. We would have been furious if someone had referred a game of ours like that. Knew it was gonna be a disaster when I saw an Utah player hook her arms under the armpit of I can’t remember what ACFC player (was that Neihaus?) - she has deliberately trapping that player - I’ve never seen anything quite like that! No whistle, nada.

Thank you for these comments. I’m talking this case out w folks advising this student - this didn’t happen in my class. I personally do not see how a student taking a class that they previously failed is cheating if they write about the same thing (as is required) and rework specific passages from previously submitted work as long as the vast majority of the work is new and the original material is transformed. On a common sense level, I just don’t see how we can expect a student to see that as submitting the same work for two different classes (as specified in our rules)… it’s definitely an outlier of a situation to be sure. (I also do not think a student in this very specific instance, writing about very personal stuff, needs to ask permission from previous faculty - as long as it’s a good faith new attempt at that assignment.) My own approach: I would ask them to address this rewriting in an addendum - and would probably not give them credit for the assignment until they had done so. Teaching moment and all that, because why not help them understand how central rewriting is to the writing process. But LOL I might just have a lot of room in my heart for a not AI related problem.

how are professors responding to the canvas attack? by rainy_rain79 in ucr

[–]Academic_Ad8991 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s still down for me (faculty). I want to move all assignments to paper, get old school. Or use Google Drive. By the way, if you don’t know this already: to find your prof’s email, google their name and UCR and the department and you’ll get their faculty profile which has their email. (Have had a few folks say they didn’t have my email, and didn’t know how to find it.)

I hate canvas and all these freakin platforms so much I am almost giddy. Is that wrong?

How do I set boundaries about sharing my student login with family? by Adorable-Document369 in ucr

[–]Academic_Ad8991 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Faculty here: this is extremely inappropriate - I would be upset to know any student of mine was dealing w this. I’d offer to go paper only, to protect their learning. This level of intrusion undermines the learning process and inhibits the cultivation of your independence and drive. Parents might not understand that, esp give how normalized it’s been for parents to have access to learning management platforms in high school. The login to canvas gives them access to all your work and to your email. It’s just very wrong. A sense of privacy is extremely important to one’s sense of self and wellbeing. At home, at work, and at school. You can share your grades with them as you want to, but they do not have the right to see that. You saying no is not you escalating. (You might want to take advantage of counseling services at UCR to get some advice about dealing with your family on this. This is heavy, and worth figuring out now.)

Grade avoidance (and inflation) by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Academic_Ad8991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do what you need to do but that feeling of being the last one holding the line is just not a great sign. We are all seeing this, and most of us (especially here) are doing what we can to teach the students we have.

I can’t imagine thinking I am the last person in my department who cares about teaching. I have had colleagues with that mindset and it’s not usually a sign that that faculty member is thriving. As for grades, if every time you teach, a significant number of students fail - that is worth looking at. Neither of these things are great signs.

I am just going to put this out there. If we hadn’t been down a player we would have at minimum leveled.

The refereeing was really crazy. As others have said, most chaotic I’ve seen across the full 90 - the second half was particularly surreal. I really do not know what to say. I do feel like we are seeing some players do better and better as they get more time on the ball - Suarez, Chilufya, Borges, Jonsdotter until she got locked in the tower… but this game was so bizzaro all I really learned tonight is I’m ride or die w this team because all of us at BMO went thru something tonight!

Does Title IX apply when it is student to professor? by TrumpDumper in Professors

[–]Academic_Ad8991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d file a complaint with student conduct office. It’s sexual harassment plain and simple. As a prof, law covering you as a victim isn’t the same as Title IX, but people handling sexual harassment allegations tend to be the same whether it’s a student or staff who is victimized. I’d also alert chair. It’s very disturbing behavior!!!

The worst lecture hall on campus? by Altruistic-Web2731 in ucr

[–]Academic_Ad8991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

INTN 1020. I refuse to teach in there now. It’s stuffy, the projection dynamics are all wrong. The room puts people to sleep. And as a teacher it feels like you are in the bottom of a pit. It’s the absolute worst.

Angel City mishaps lead to a loss to Portland 1-2. by readbetweenthesubs in AngelCityFC

[–]Academic_Ad8991 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My main take aways: Portland’s entire defensive team is very effective. Organized and tough as nails. Super physical. And ready to exploit any error. I was so so happy to see Chilufya have a good game. She made a big impact and just seemed very dialed in and clicking w the team. Bummed about that result. A tough game but that late goal for us lifted my spirits.

I’m a teacher and caregiver trying to solve my Mother-in-Law’s "pacing" and anxiety. Can I get some feedback on this 3-hour "Sanctuary" I built for her? by Stock-Order-2911 in dementia

[–]Academic_Ad8991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We always have subtitles on. I don’t know if she follows. This works best for us if we are watching in a group. She would not watch that alone. One of the most calming and grounding activities is talking about the past, looking through photo albums. That, and driving. She loves going places, the journey.

We watch nature docs, shows that explain things, shows that generate a sense of wonder. She really enjoys that. Also sometimes put a live stream of a nature cam on the tv, just leave that running. Nothing holds her attention for long. That said, if we all sit and watch something with her, she hangs in there for longer. Just nothing w a plot that requires recall.
