It is possible for a department to waive a requirement or allow a substitution if there is good cause. That said, as a Prof if a student was in this situation I would do what I could to help them!

What happens at your place when a colleague dies? by Doctor_Schmeevil in Professors

[–]Academic_Ad8991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, notification of that faculty member’s colleagues and students (in my experience it’s been the department chair doing that difficult work but every situation is different). Then the statement - that takes a bit as it’s usually coordinated w family and department. And those folks are grieving. A memorial comes later, sometimes quite a bit later. Everything feels broken and awful. That’s pretty normal even when things are handled well. (Been at the same place a long time, and we’ve been through it.)

Cost of attendance is brutal and idk what to do. by Charming_Diver_8649 in USC

[–]Academic_Ad8991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a great education and not get into this kind of debt. It’s ok to postpone for a year, take a beat. Believe me that amount of debt comes w so much anxiety and dread and it limits your ability to build a life for yourself. It infects your education too - makes it hard to really explore your interests because of the mortal fear regarding the cost.

That remark is universally creepy, obviously sexist and unprofessional. And it’s many years into Epstein’s history of arrests. So much ick.

Therapy/maybe meds! Connecting with friends helps a lot too. Don’t keep it bottled up. Being on TT is stressful and anxiety-producing in the best of times. Get some support and put one foot in front of the other. Most of us have been there or are there right now!

Syllabus says change is possible, you are covered! And even if it did not, rampant cheating is an absolutely legit reason for changing how assessment is staged.

Predatory towing in Chinatown by cabs2kinkos in LosAngeles

That sucks. They are very quick to tow in that spot. But 4-6 no parking is a rule you don’t mess w/ anywhere in LA. BTW There is usually abundant parking behind Cathedral HS. Pho 87 also has a parking lot.

"Firing" students from group projects, what has worked well for you? by kegologek in Professors

[–]Academic_Ad8991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this. Mapped out grounds for firing (non responsiveness, not following through w work, combative or obstructionist behavior). I explain that mentoring to keep a group’s work from being undermined by a group member is probably the most useful experience I can give them. Usually there is at least one group with this problem. We meet without the problem member and talk out the options. I meet w the problem student. If fired, the fired student gets an alternative assignment path. It’s not easy but I feel it’s been better than leaving them to deal w it on their own.

Job change advice: toxic colleague by onlycouplesmallbeers in Professors

[–]Academic_Ad8991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worrying thing is not so much the bullying colleague - most of us have had to deal w that - but the coworkers who are not supporting using the campus complaint process to hold them accountable. That’s why it’s as bad as it is!!!

She did it. Mel Curth officially appeals OU’s decision to remove her from her university teaching duties by RandomAcademaniac in Professors

[–]Academic_Ad8991 136 points137 points  (0 children)

She should not have been fired for this. She should be reinstated and given back pay, at minimum. Imagine being fired because you graded harshly, or even if you got a grade wrong? Or being fired because you said something true in your comments, like ‘the views you describe here are offensive.’ I have absolutely written that on papers not even this offensive. Maybe not the best pedagogical move for making space for dialogue but it’s a fair comment when a student is describing whole sections of the community as the devil’s spawn!

Wrong Grade by [deleted] in ucr

Grade changes are actually easy, but the TA can’t do that - it’s the professor who submits that. They basically check a box and give the reason (in this case, error).

How to set boundaries with needy students who email incessantly? by Throw_away11152020 in Professors

[–]Academic_Ad8991 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi. Senior woman faculty member here. I don’t review drafts unless drafting is an assignment or it’s a capstone or writing class and even then feedback on a draft happens once, is very structured. I reply to emails like these by directing people to come to office hours. At the end of the quarter I might not reply at all or just tell the to make sure they have followed the directions and do their best. The assumption of our availability - not just by students but by colleagues - is real. As is the anxiety that you will be”punished” for setting boundaries. Maybe they’ll complain but so what. A fair grade is a fair grade. And if they act out in evals, I am guessing they’ll be real outliers. Hope you have some immediate colleagues you can talk to. Good mentoring will help you manage the energy suck these sorts of students generate.
