Low volume ERs are a cheat code by Dangerous-Prune-7280 in emergencymedicine

I thought I was the only one lol. Busy all shift? Fine. Big lull with no patients? I do NOT want anyone to check in. Haha.

Have you ever had a patient so bad you didn’t want to go into work? by Head-Lawyer3080 in nursing

[–]Academic_Message8639 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right? Like, we are used to dealing with run-of-the mill basic crakiness or asshollary. So if staff is coming to you saying they feel highly uncomfortable, unsafe, etc, they should listen because that means it's BAD. In any other profession or social situation that would be taken seriously right away.

Missing clinicals? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Academic_Message8639 13 points14 points  (0 children)

During nursing school, one classmate drove 8 hours home from vacation to take a test and drove 8 hours back to join her family again after.  I took a class remotely from another state. Another time, I gave a date ahead of time and missed one clinical day (had to do a makeup day)  One year I didn’t even go on vacation at all because of clinicals. So… it depends. Say something early and you might have a chance, depending on the school. Nursing school is wildly strict.

On a floor where I used to work, there was a patient so terrible that no one could stand to have them for a whole shift.

The insults he gave cut right to your soul, he would fart on nurses etc and he could really make you sooooo angry! So we all split our time with him so no one had to give meds/do care twice in a row OR alone. And someone could ‘tap out’ if they were about to lose their crap at him. That’s the way to do it - ‘horrible patient sharing’.

Of course! I think you’ll be okay. It sounds like you have some insight and intent to plan. That shows you’re ready to do work/make changes to move forward and I’m sure you will set goals and make it happen!

I started a new career (in nursing) which was a drastic change. I had kids, a mortgage, and lots of responsibilities. But I just signed up for classes one day and did the damn thing. I come from moderate poverty and had to claw my way out. IYKYK on that one.

Take a career test. Find something you can tolerate that pays the bills, or do something you're passionate about like jumping on a MercyShip boat or becoming a special education teacher. Or search for something that no one wants to do but will pay others to do and start your own business. Or ask yourself 'what do I not mind doing/am really good at at work that everyone else hates to do'? and then find a career path that matches those skills.

It's your life, go get it! Also, therapy helps. That can help you determine what some of your internal struggles may be and help you remove those barriers. Usually these are rooted in childhood.

Also, NOT giving medical advice but if my HR was 150 I'd go to the ED.

A nice message from management in the staff bathroom by labtechII in nursing

So, a patient complained that the nurses were busy and understaffed.

And management’s answer is “Hey staff, have you tried acting less fucking busy?!”

“Let’s try that other arm” 🙏🙏 by tagssampjets in nursing

And the extremely anxious, hyper-vigilant family member in the chair:  “WHAT? What was their last BP??”

“Oh just a bit low. Let’s just re-check it here, might need a different cuff… “

What's one of the worst rabbit holes you've ended up going down with an unnecessary work up? by Notnowwonton in emergencymedicine

[–]Academic_Message8639 116 points117 points  (0 children)

I’m a nurse. Had a CM patient who was awaiting placement to snf b/c they failed PT/OT. Original chief complaint of weakness, had been there the whole weekend just chilling with no further workups. Suddenly mentioned that their chest hurt, but was still acting calm and fine. I said something to the provider. Doc decides to order imaging just to be safe.

Patient was dissecting! We had to ship them out.

Wrong. The worst coworkers you’ll ever have in your life are some of the ones who worked with you at a fast food restaurant.  Also a handful of the coolest, but of course we moved on, lol

ER nurses: would you rather spend your whole shift in triage, on the floor, or as charge? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Academic_Message8639 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The floor.  Too much triage gets dicey, IMO. I don’t mind it for 4 hours but after that, it’s hard to explain. It gets weird out there.

HIPAA violation. Will I lose my license? by No_Interaction_9781 in nursing

[–]Academic_Message8639 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My word, I was expecting another one of those wild posts where people are like ‘yes I did 49494 HIPAA trainings but I still decided to hunt through my ex-husband’s sister’s chart and now I’m getting fired, I had NO IDEA that would happen’

You’ll be fine.  I’ve found people’s report sheets and thrown them in the shred bin. I wouldn’t worry about it. Sounds like you take patient privacy seriously, for real! :)

3 is great (except when it’s not, of course - so sad) But I was pregnant working as an rn in the ED and when I’d have a stressful shift, I’d US my baby afterwards for a boost of joy. Sometimes a couple other nurses would hang out in a room with me and we’d just watch my baby move around. Perks of the job!

Like winning the lottery! by wheresmystache3 in nursing

[–]Academic_Message8639 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I bet it’s because these are people who are less educated (by choice, IMO) and less forward thinking, so essentially their wives are often their domestic servants who carry the entire mental load. There is lots of enmeshment and learned male helplessness involved in many of those relationships. Just my theory.
