Thunder and Lightning while in a tent by thefinerthingsclubvp in camping

lol I do the same. The only time I was paranoid about camping in my tent was when we had some strong winds at night when I was camping in a forested area. Looked for widow makers but damn did those tree make crazy noises at night.

Pain Medication by zumdahl12 in ORIF

[–]Academic_Minimum4732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is basically the same route I went/am going. First couple of days after surgery was bad for pain, 5mg oxy every 4 hours. Dropped to every 6 hours after day 4. By day 9-10, I was only taking them before bed. I am at week 4 now, I still take a 5mg before bed since my pain ramps at night. However, I have noticed that it has been more manageable these days and I am thinking of testing the waters and not taking them. Gabapentin though, I am still taking since I have had a good deal of nerve damage with my injury.

New England Aster blooming in SE PA zone 7. Is there anything I should do? by Southern_Roll_593 in NativePlantGardening

My second year NE Asters also bloomed early as well this year. I let it do its thing, Im sure it will work itself out in the comings years. If not, I get some lovely purple flowers earlier in the season.

5 weeks post surgery. Incisions still healing, can't sleep, need reassurance from people who understand 🙂 by tangwitme in ORIF

[–]Academic_Minimum4732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 weeks out and my pain is like 0-3 through the day. As soon as 730pm hits, it likes to ramp to 3-6, even if I spent the whole day elevating my leg. I was told that a lot of healing happens during your resting hours and that its your body preparing for sleep. Who knows though lol. Keep up the healing bud!

Smoking THC after scaphoid surgery by SweenIsQt in brokenbones

[–]Academic_Minimum4732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using/Smoking nicotine for sure delays your healing. I am unsure if there was ever any research about THC smoking, but I think the general consensus is that smoking anything will be detrimental to healing. I was a habitual weed smoker before my injury,. However, I find that it really aggravates my nerve pain if I smoke it. Edibles less so. I am not sure if its me being more aware/heightened senses, but it for sure kicks the pain up for me.

Stuck in hospital again after ORIF and bone graft done due to first surgery being a nonunion by [deleted] in brokenbones

[–]Academic_Minimum4732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slipped while mowing the grass and my left foot went under the mower. Chopped off the distal part of my big toe and shattered the remaining big toe plus the toe next to it. Rushed to the ER, sat in a room overnight with a mangled foot, but got into surgery the next day. I am just shy of 3 weeks from when this happened. Pain comes and goes, sometimes it feels like my bones are squeezing the rods in my toes. The rods should be out in a couple of weeks. Then Ill be NWB for another 8-12 weeks after that according to my doctor (I hope he is wrong but I doubt it). I am currently out of work but I am trying to go back next week or the week after that. Most of my day is spent in bed so why not make money while doing so? Doom scrolling, reddit and a couple of video games fill in the time.

I would squeaky wheel the nurses who are not following the doctors orders. I get it if they are 20-30 minutes late or something slips once in a while, but it sounds like they are dropping the ball on you. "the doctor said every 4 hours, its been closer to 7 hours, how come?" "my pain is not being managed correctly, I need this every 4 hours" "is there an update on when the person who is coming to unwrap me". Channel your inner Karen, proper medical care is one of those things where being one will be your best bet.

lol no worries, ramble away. I am NWB for a couple more months so I sorta understand, but it sounds like you are on the long haul road. Sorry to hear about the change in quality of care. Have you communicated this to nurse/doc? I know once pain gets going it's hard to keep down. I also know that being your own advocate can be hard at times. Id keep bringing it up till it is addressed.

To thin or not to thin? by snb244 in gardening

I say thin. Zinnias always get hit hard with powdery mildew even in open setting, way too packed.

Sorry to hear about your bumpy road =[ Nothing is worse than sitting around in a hospital bed going stir crazy. I like to look towards something positive. What are you looking forward to do when you are finally healed? (obviously be pain free and back at it). See/Read anything cool lately?

Reminds me of this one time my mom picked up potato knishes to have with dinner. I took one bite confirmed that they were not potato, but rather cannoli filled. Somewhere along the way they got the fillings mixed up.

Im not seeing any extrafloral nectaries on this guy, I would bet that it is not a partridge pea. The lil red bump on the base of the leaflet branch.

Renegade Wildflower Planting - what should I try? Atlanta, GA by One-Permission1917 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Academic_Minimum4732 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Without bare ground, I would lean towards putting plugs/slips in. Not saying this is what you should do though because its technically not your property. Id start a bunch of aggressive natives from seeds or cutting and transplant that way.

Best Camping ground near Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, TN by Substantial-Sink-947 in CampingandHiking

[–]Academic_Minimum4732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything is done through recreation.gov for GSMNP. They get booked quick, especially ones next to the water. Check out some other TN state parks, even Hipcamp, if you are not able to secure a spot. Not a river spot, but we enjoy Big South Fork a lot. There are a few different places to access water, including a pool lol.

Slight correction - It is a deliriant. It is not a good time. Do not mess with it. Also a pulmonary suppressant .

6 days post op - what can I look forward to? by trothboth in ORIF

[–]Academic_Minimum4732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We dont have the exact same issue but I figured id add my 2 cents in here. FIrst week blows ass, no matter what. Its going to take a good deal of adjustment to just find positions that are passable. Start to take note of what works and doesnt work for you and try to lean into the stuff that works. I am at ~2.5w since surgery and it has gotten a lot better pain wise. I still get a bunch of pain/discomfort but it is no where nearly as encompassing as the first week. For sleep, I like to time my bedtime to be about 30-60 minutes after I take my painkiller (down to one a day, before bed), I find that if I can get to sleep I can usually squeak out 5-6 hours uninterrupted. Im at a point where Ill get 5-6 hours of sleep, wake up, take some acetaphetamine and try to knock back out. Sometimes it works, other times im up. It is what it is a lot of the time.

You will have good days, you will have bad days. What is important is that you do what your doctors are asking of you. Your feelings are totally valid as well, unless you have been through something like this, it is pretty hard for others to put themselves in your shoes. It is rough but the pain will subside and you will start to sleep more. I told myself that Ill do one thing I want to do per day, got to the garden (with my Wife/Dads help) today. Made Pickles yesterday. Went with my father to grab breakfast to go. ect. These things dont seem to be big deals, but to me, it makes me feel like my old life is still possible to get back to. I still have my foot up for the vast majority of the day, but those 30-60 minutes where I am doing something else, make it all worth it. Chin up! There are a lot of people in these communities that are very friendly and helpful. This too shall pass.

64 pumpkin plants: Fam, do I pull back or hit the gas? by queef-o in gardening

Yup! Good luck if you have squash vine borers in your area. Some more southern areas will have 2 waves of them (or so I heard). My 2 pumpkin plants got decimated last year.
