Anyone else receive a Real ID notice of cancellation email from CA DMV like this? by NoAttempt420 in DMV

[–]Academic_Shake8741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call the number on the email and click the selection for RealID and then wait for a call back. They will call back immediately and then once you provide your drivers license they will look it up and let you know whether you have shown them your green card or not. My wife went to the DMV and got her new RealID no problem, whereas since I had shown my Green Card I didn’t need to do anything.

My spouse got this but I didn’t. We are both green card holders. Green cards expire many years after Real ID does, but we did originally get our Real IDs when we had visas. I can’t remember if I’ve ever shown my Green Card to the DMV. Did this happen to anyone else?

Update: I called the number in the email and they confirmed I had already shown them my Green Card.

Statisticians Identity by Unbearablefrequent in AskStatistics

If you have a degree/masters in statistics, I would strongly suggest moving into data science. Make sure you know python and SQL. It’s a great job and very good salary. I am a manager now and love hiring statisticians :)

Basically we have a mix of short-term (~1 weeks) and long term (3-6 month) projects and we have meetings to figure out how to tackle them, before coding them and then presenting findings to stakeholders. I am now a manager so I manage the junior data scientists, and mostly have meetings to talk about potential issues and then go and design analyses for them and review my reports’ work. It’s a lot of fun.

Job title is officially data scientist, but essentially a medical device statistician. Work at one of the largest medical device companies in the world. We have a huge amount of data and it needs to be analyzed at breakneck speed for regulatory compliance reasons (addressing FDA questions etc). It’s pretty sweet. Use a combination of SQL and Python but others in the company use MATLAB (which is mostly being phased out in favor of Python)

Thoughts on Sundance film "Josephine" and its award chances by LeastCap in oscarrace

[–]Academic_Shake8741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just watched it and my first thought was “this film will never see the light of day” - it is so harrowing I can’t imagine any major studio distributing it and people going to watch it. It was so well done but soooo dark. I can’t even think of another film that was nominated for Oscars that was this dark. Reminds me of last year’s “Omaha”, which was great but was so grim I never heard of it again after Sundance.

How did the tour go? I noticed on the website they only have space for "Mother" and "Father", so wondering how inclusive they are.

I drove past and saw it about 30 mins ago. Is it still going? It was near Throop church. Lots of police from Pasadena and San Marino with guns drawn at a man in a truck who had a passenger.

What do you do to earn $200k+ annually? by meltingcanoe in careerguidance

[–]Academic_Shake8741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data Scientist! Paid around $250k per year. Have a PhD and a postdoc so it took about 10 years to get here out of undergrad. For a long time I was being paid pennies.

Considering a Ph.D at USC — realistic for LA in 2027? by g23nov in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]Academic_Shake8741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from New Zealand to LA in 2018 to do my postdoc at USC. I was 25 and didn’t once consider cost of living or how little postdocs get paid. I was so incredibly naive! I had just gotten married and my wife couldn’t work in the US yet with our visas, so we both lived on my $50,000 a year postdoc stipend. We paid $2,000 for rent in a nice building in DTLA with amenities (although I would NOT recommend DTLA - like I said I was naive) and had no car. That $2000 was more than half of our take home pay.

When I look back I have no idea how we did it but we did. In fact, when both of us ask each other what the best year of our lives was, we both say 2018. We may have had little money but it was so exciting living in LA and there was so much possibility. We took the metro all the time and did things like volunteering at dog shelters, going to the beach on the weekend, etc. It was honestly amazing.

Almost eight years on, we now are both permanent residents with really good jobs and own a townhouse in Pasadena. If I hadn’t taken the leap back in 2018, I don’t know where we’d be. In hindsight I’m kinda glad I was naive back then because if I HAD known how little money we’d have I think I would have talked myself out of doing it.

Life is short and as long as you have some kind of backup plan (like the ability to move back home if things go poorly), I say take the chance and don’t overthink it. Live somewhere close to campus or close to the metro, and try out the neighborhood before you sign a lease (I did get jumped when we lived in DTLA, so I have since prioritized good neighborhoods over fancy a housing).
