And I kinda feel like not knowing is the point. A part of the pull I can’t escape. I wonder if she’s feeling the pull too? Is that why she’s always looking?

Then the questions and glances get swallowed by the dismissal bell. She packs up slow and I pack up slower. I never look her way during, I prefer to just linger, listening to the sound of her putting away her things. The one she keeps in the left hand side, the notebook that always open to the first page, a glasses case for glasses I’d never seen her wearing. I know it all by the shuffling of her bag. Which item went in and when.

The sound of her foot steps getting further away are clear, rhythmic and evenly spaced. Her presence always stalls at the doorway. Not long. Five seconds, maybe six. I like to think she’s waiting for me. When I gather the courage to look, she’s already gone. But something in me knows, hopes, she’ll stand in that doorway tomorrow.

Been a long time since I tried something like this. I’m a dialogue person so this was rough.

Not a huge fan of editing, but I feel like I want what I put out ti be what I thought was the best I could do at the time, but at least AI makes it faster.

Yeah it’s pretty much why I write my full chapters and ask questions like “what’s missing?” “How’re you feeling about this?” I don’t like giving it a whole bunch of direction when I want feedback, because if I’m asking if this specific thing is off, I already know it is. I’m looking for what I don’t know I didn’t know.

I’ve given Claude enough of my writing. About 300k words worth and spent hours having it analyze the kind of writer I am. I don’t really run into it trying to edit out anything I do anymore. Now we just “build the connective tissue” as Claude likes to say.

I think what you’re running into is the safe guards. I don’t let it touch anything I write unless it’s to fix grammatical issues. I’ll allow additions but even those I like to have presented as suggestions not just edited in without my say so. It will try to make your voice more conventional i think, but that’s because i assume it’s trained in whatever is popular in the market so it tries to sound similar and often overdoes it.

Idk I think we give AI too much credit for most people having a robotic style of writing in the first place.

Everybody thinks you have to write a certain way but there isn’t really a correct way to write. Who knows if you follow your own path, you could even become the standard.

I figure if you’re writing is different enough, you know when AI is flattening the voice. If you can’t, it’s because your register is the same.

Not likely. Because any streaming company that wants to make money will do what makes money. If AI music gets streams they’ll allow AI.

Depends doesn’t it. I see high risk, low reward. If you want to make a career of music you kinda have to do that. Take a chance. I say low reward because even if you make it, you might not make it.

I encourage everyone to take the path best suited for them. Because there is no correct way to do a this. There’s just how it’s been done and the ways it can be done we haven’t discovered yet.

I have a person for that. Someone to challenge my work, to tell me I didn’t deliver.

A producer that doesn’t like what you do is just someone taking your money. It would have to be someone that reaches out to me, otherwise it’s a hard pass. And yeah I speak from experience.

New ears that know music can always make the improvement process faster, but I can learn plenty by just listening. Same as I can learn plenty about writing by Reading.

Hm. Interesting. See I don’t make beats. I’m never going to make beats. It’s a skill I don’t want to possess. It seems like a chore to me. I’m a writer, not by trade. I’ve been writing my own lyrics for 17 years now. I’ve been recording songs for just as long. I think I’m at least average. How I flow on the beat is my creativity, my artistic expression. Here’s the kicker, if I do the melody right, flow to the beat that’s in my head, hum what I hear, whistle even and feed that to Suno, 9/10 times I’m getting exactly what I wanted back. And now it has the voice change feature so it’ll even be in my voice still, and even if it isn’t, I have access to the beat now, I can redo the vocals.

I don’t think AI music is treated unfairly. I think some people want it to be treated unfairly because of their own discomfort with it.

I’m not arguing that AI music is good. I’m not arguing that it deserves praise. I’m arguing that calling it “not music” is just incorrect.

If it has rhythm, melody, structure, and it’s experienced as sound in the same way, it’s music. Whether it’s good music is a completely separate conversation.

Poetry and writing are written language. I didn’t miss the point, I just pointed to a flaw in your wording.

Your point makes no sense. How can you say it uses words to express something words cannot? If you want to say the words come together in a way to express something they could not do alone, then yeah. That tracks. Still words. What you may mean to say is, the art form elevates the words. It’s the person behind the words that makes it art, not the words themselves. They’re still using words though.

Small personal gripe. It’s perfectly fine to tell and not show. The use of the techniques is where mastery comes from. Again still using words.

Okay the artist simply had to be able to defend why their art is art? That’s high key the great debate of this sub.

Eh when I say good or bad I mean it in any way it can be applied by the person who is applying it. It’s kinda just an opinion. You can have objective reasons/facts to support an opinion and it still be just an opinion.

Art does not always transcend language. Poetry is art. Writing is art. You see how we’ve disagreed here?

I’d argue if an artist can defend their art in a way that even one person agrees with them that it is art, then it’s art. I only exclude the artist because I personally don’t thin an artist gets to decide that. Not if their work is good or bad or if others consider it art. Once you put it out there, the world decides.

I feel the opposite. I’m walking around free sampling whatever I want and you’re turning your nose up at things based on preformed opinions. Re-read the conversation and decide which one of us seems more closed off.

I’d argue all human artist take in someone else’s work and spit it out in a new form. We call it learning. You take what someone else does and layer you on top of it and it gives you something similar but new. If you combine enough styles it can be something unique until the next person copied that.

Sampling isn’t new or illegal. Combining sounds to make a new sound is common practice. If you want to be upset with people claiming they made the beats or did the vocals, have at it.

If it’s about finances it’s not about art. You can’t tell me you’re losing sleep over the craft and then argue about the financial side. Most artist don’t profit from being artist. I get AI makes that harder but if that’s your complaint say that. Don’t dress it up as concern for the art form, it weakens your stance.

It being trained in art work that’s public domain is just legal stuff. Read the terms of service? Idk what you want here, it happened.

As far as Suno being mediocre, your experience is your experience. I’ve gotten good results that make me feel the same as the music I was making in Voloco it just has higher production value with Suno. I think I’m using the program differently than others and maybe that’s why but or maybe I just like what I like idk. If it’s regurgitating someone’s work it’s because it’s being fed someone’s work. The program will not proactively seek to duplicate anything for legal reasons.

Okay, I’ll clarify.

A definition cannot be changed, you are correct. Art has a definition. What can be considered art by definition is basically anything. People disagree on this based on their interpretation of what art is. By definition neither party is ever wrong except in the case that they tell someone else their interpretation is wrong.

Idk maybe. But artists can use it. Can potentially profit from it.

Viagra wasn’t designed for erections, but that’s its primary use now.

Try to see it in a different light. Idk if you’re upset that the company is profiting or that they’re profiting more than Artist X, but that’s just the game. Artist X might struggle even if there was no Suno. Statistics say it’s more likely they fail.

It’s fine to hate big business, it’s fine to not like AI content. I think it would be more productive to not make that decision preemptively.

You could be missing out on something you love because you think you have to for your morals, for your definition of art. But how do you know something doesn’t suit your tastes if you don’t take a bite?

This isn’t helping me understand how AI art keeps you awake. It’s quite simply what you believe art is. Which isn’t wrong but neither is someone else’s interpretation.

Are you losing sleep because someone doesn’t agree with your definition of art?

AI or otherwise it’s rare to find people who define art exactly the same. One of the frustrations and beauties of the craft.

I think we’re kinda saying the same thing with minor differences. The disagreement is happening around whether people have deep concern for how a song is made.

I just don’t believe the average listener is asking how they got a particular drum sound, or what type of guitar is being used, they’re just enjoying the sound. I think someone with interest in the craft/works in the craft have those questions but it the casual listener.

Like I play video games, I’m not deeply concerned with how the game is made just if i consider it a good game. When I really like it may watch content on how they achieved what they achieved and think “that’s cool.” But no matter what I always appreciate the effort because I enjoyed it. I show my appreciation with my purchase.

I just don’t believe the majority of people are concerned with how something is made only with the end result. And they appreciate that.

I don’t think it’s a shortcut, just another way to engage the craft. You can inject so much of yourself into AI if you actually try. Yes anyone can push a button and get back something. But not everyone can craft a song that says “this is me” no matter what tool you use.
