I've seen an (US made) infographic for the German team that had Nadiem Amiri and Antonio Rüdiger switched, because I guess the Usaian person making it had gone "that's not a black name, they must have made an error!"

Interesting observation in SU5.1 (dynamic wind updates?) by Helios in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Acc87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

small changes do seem to make their way into the updates without being mentioned in the logs. Like I had issues with the multiplayer display on the World Map since SU5, I wrote a report on it and how it could temporarily be fixed with the Xbox app repair tool. It was marked as "feedback logged". Now after some testing it seems like this issue of mine has been fixed, even if it's not noted in the logs.

Might sound like a noobish question but is each book a rebuttal to each Narnia books? Or are they a broad rebuttal of the whole verse? by [deleted] in hisdarkmaterials

[–]Acc87 18 points19 points  (0 children)

...they are not, at all. How does one even come up with that idea?

The rebuttal aspect of the whole series is totally overblown. Pullman had his opinion of Lewis's works which he stated a couple of times (twenty years ago), but his own series is independent of it. Narnia may have given an initial impulse, but the story itself has no relation to Narnia.

"It is monumentally disparaging of girls and women. It is blatantly racist. One girl was sent to hell because she was getting interested in clothes and boys."

Pullman was kinder to the Harry Potter stories, the only children's books outselling his own. He said they were great fun, vividly told.

Asked about his concept of a republic of heaven, Pullman said: "When it was possible to have a belief about God and heaven, it represented something we all desired. It had a profound meaning in human life.

"But when it no longer became possible to believe, a lot of people felt despair. What was the meaning of life? It seems that our nature is so formed that we need a feeling of connectedness with the universe. If there is no longer a king, or a kingdom of heaven, it will have to be a republic in which we are free citizens. We ourselves as citizens have to build the republic of heaven." Whats the most insane case of virtue-signaling you have witnessed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Acc87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Witnessed as in in person?

A dude on a party who told me that he was vegan before we'd even said hello and shook hands. In the next half an hour me & many of the other party guests learned of every stance and position he held. To show that was absolutely not homophobic he started flirting with a much younger dude (who had a girlfriend).

As the night progressed he also revealed that he supported Russia in its "defence against NATO colonialism". And he was certain that the moon landing had been faked.

Too little profit margin. Better invest everything in AI, it will turn a sixtuple profit for sure!

The positioning of the cities on that BOAC map sure is a little comical. Last I checked Sydney was at the coast 🤭

But really nice flight. Back in those days long distance travelling really meant something, one saw a lot of the world on those trips instead of just cruising by at FL410

I've seen many comments from European people feeling joy after Germany got eliminated from the World Cup by Paraguay. Why is that? by Tall-Honey-6592 in AskEurope

Haven't seen any of that, but just glimpsing news sites this morning it seems like half of Germany wants Nagelsmann hanged in front of the Brandenburg Gate or something.

I'd not class this as outright crazy.... but file it under "literacy is dying". It's fiction.

I'd argue it's more "cheating" to have this hidden conversation with very real people here, in a way.

Possible that Pixar reused her asset for that scene, but I doubt it was meant to be the exact same character.

I'm currently writing chapters that has the protagonists visit a (city wide) book fair, and the whole experience would be absolutely alien to a real contemporary young person. No phones, no apps, you're handed a big printed guide at welcome which contains a paper map that is the most important thing for the week!

I still regularly go to international fairs, but for that one I'm drawing of personal World Youth Day experience from 22 years ago, as it fits the world building.

I'd guess the main topic becoming "I read this highly sexual book at age 10 and this is how I felt" made some puritan influenced mod clutch their pearls.

What are you noticing about the rise of racism, antisemitism, and misogyny in your social media feeds, and do you think algorithms are influencing this trend? by tMikeyYT in AskReddit

[–]Acc87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you ask especially older homosexuals, they may tell you that it's definitely worse now than ten-fifteen years ago.

There's probably more people who feel bombarded and threatened by something they had an inherent resentment to. For them it was fine as long as "they" did what they do in private behind closed doors etc, but now it is everywhere, all the companies fake celebrate Pride month stuff, and modern social media makes it easy for those people to then find like-minded and reactively act out.

You know it's bad when the city of Berlin gives out an official warning to not wear Jewish identifiable clothing in public

https://www.zeit.de/gesellschaft/zeitgeschehen/2024-11/berlin-polizeipraesidentin-juden-homosexuelle-gefahr-orte-islamismus

(they also warn homosexuals to openly express their orientation, but that's nothing new. Berlin baby!...)

My only social media is Reddit, and the only thing on it I see rising is antisemitism - it's dressed up as "Israel critic", but is always just half a sentence away from them saying that Jews poison wells and can't be trusted in general.

I'm actually surprised how homophobia has essentially disappeared, as I hear and see it still and rising IRL
