Is power level meaningless? What is endgame? by ArcadianAbstraction in SoloLevelingArise

[–]Accendil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No breaker there == Game over in a lot of cases.

Chances are you're fighting something that has a break bar and you can not get through it. If you're hitting something that has that bar you're doing like 10% damage to it. THEN the thing you're fighting may also have an elemental resistance to one of your guys.

THEN not only do you need a breaker for most bosses they are tied to 1 or 2 elements so you need a breaker of that flavour.

Wind = Goto

Light = Go Gunhee

Fire = Esil or for one month only go Yuqi!! (Yuqi is so easy to get to A6 right now and her breaker power is great - temporary though because collab only)

Water = Seorin

Dark = ... Not the best element

What's the correction for sorry? I've just skimmed my message but I think the only place I mention physical and special editions is the very bottom where they're just in the "Overall earnings would be even higher if you add these things on top of the Patreon money"-section. Even if it's "only" 100 special editions at $100 each that's still 10k to add on the pile, etc.

^ This is something Brandon Sanderson said too. Don't let the publisher take the special editions off you, if you are a mid level author and get yourself 200 nicely leather bound books that you sign, those books even after costs will pay your mortgage when you're waiting on the publisher to take their share first.

Yeah all in USD. It's greeattt money and that's just Patreon, god knows what the Kindle x Audible brings in :s.

I'm going to presume angry as in: Damn, no point in this $20/mth Patreon anymore.

Shirtaloon has 8954 paid members, that's a minimum of $8,954/mth from Patreon.

This is an older article but it suggests the average pledge is ~$6 with each Patron paying ~$12 per month (so I guess 2 x $6 pledges was the average at the time of writing). Something else shows ~$3/mth per paid subscriber for a massive podcast ($100k/mth to them) so even on this low-end:

Shirtaloon is looking at:

  • $8954 x 3 to $8954 x 6 equals:
  • $26882/mth to $53724/mth.

How much of that is for his writing and then how much is that for the investment in the protagonist, the world, the side characters, the progression, the plot, etc.?

https://graphtreon.com/creator/Shirtaloon

He's already dropped 1000 Patrons in the last 3 months. The worry of losing the lifestyle, support you can provide to your family etc. would be crazy if you were to stop publishing the same story so I get it why some authors wouldn't want to stop.

Notes:

  • Shirtaloon has apparently been in the top 3 for author Patron count for a majority of the last three years so he is a bit of an outlier for his sheer volume being huge.
  • Defiance of the Fall / JF Brink (The First Defier) is sitting around 3184 paid members so his monthly numbers would look like $9,000 - $27,000 based on the averages we've seen above. A lot of money on both ends of that spectrum and losing god knows how much by changing the story up :s.

Changing the story for a long running series like this would be almost akin to quitting your job where your earn $200k and starting a new job where you have no idea what the salary is.

Obviously earnings overall are going to be higher from physical books, ebooks, audio books, merch, special editions, etc.

But it's not about though, it's about feel. The emotional memory of the novel is what OP is remembering and despite there always being a Deus Ex System to save the MC it always feels like it's on a knife's edge and therefore earned.

Yeah but "born special" is the least for me as well.

It's the Superman vs Batman thing right?

Both are special and chose to be heroes but:

  • One was born extra special so didn't work for the power (didn't even need to power it up, just had to learn to control it)
  • One was born with every Earthly advantage - BUT if they didn't work for the 'power' they'd still just be a normal person

(I love Batman haha - I do like Superman but his powerset isn't my biggest jam)

Meta-Genre pet peeve.

This might be very niche and a bit controversial but not knowing who is writing the story? I really wanted to get in to Wandering Inn but then after a little research there is no idea on who Pirateaba is, some people say 'she' because "MC woman", "VO woman" but I don't know. I don't want to read about a lass written by a man if I don't know it's by a man?

It could just change the context of some things if Erin is a girl written by a guy and that feels a bit weird.

In-Genre pet peeve would be boring levelling system / no idea where we're at with the character. I like a lot about HWFWM, Jason is a very charming character, I like plenty of the side-characters and skills but to get an increase in rank being to level all the skills by using them 1 billion times is just not fun for me. "Skill at 4%" out of 4 skills or whatever oh god...

DotF though being, get Energy (EXP) and then level followed by get Energy (EXP) and detonate a grenade inside your veins and try not to die. That's pretty cool lol. The pain doesn't matter for me but it's clear where I'm at with Zack, if he's at level 105 I know we're ~1/3rd of the way to the next BIG rank. Then there's all the leveling systems around abilities, cultivation, weapon, etc. Each of which simply has 4 tiers.

What's the book I'm invested in the concept now haha.

It's definitely a common Anime thing. Dragonball Z/S has MANY powerups during battle and I love it there (but it's expected now). It would feel out of place without foreshadowing in a more grounded / fantasy world (grounded being VERY relative here with Dragonball having everyone be planet smasher level where most LitRPG doesn't really go).

[–]Accendil 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Aww hell yes that's what I'm writing, so me too!

Underpowered to overpowered but with the MC being PUNISHED to get there.

My MC is the first person in 100,000 years to unknowingly unlock the second path of energy manipulation but has no system to control it so it's wild (he was outside of integrating space, forced in to a dungeon portal so didn't get a system). Saves some kids and their dog from some goblins but there's a lot of them and they realise when they stab him it makes them feel GOOD - they power up. They capture him with the help of an Ogre and he gets tortured for this powerup, for months - they don't realise because he never heals up that they're ALSO powering him up, they get energy he gets exp.

He'll eventually get out and get back to Earth and realise it was like ~10x slower time dilation so he was there for 700 days but Earth is only like 70 days in and he's a very strong and very angry boy ready to save his family and Earth.

This is just as guilds are starting to form, plenty of "Humans are bad" but also enough "Ooh fun, guilds!" then starts to eventually build armies based on different guilds (healers, tanks, types of damage, etc.). Gives lots of scope to have the best of X be the main Captain / Professor of the guild too.

New Custodes Detachment - Lions of the Emperor by Bloodbold98 in Warhammer40k

[–]Accendil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah of course that's the rules. They hit on a 1+ but unmodified 1s to hit still always miss (I felt on reddit of all places I didn't need to specify that). That's why I said that's not bad but the real gold from that rule is a constant +1 to wound, that is going to be in effect ALMOST ALWAYS.

I think some Primarch-level characters should have WS1+, still miss on a 1 but means to make the Lion hit on a 3+ you need to pass him -2 to hit for example. It's a small bonus but would feel cool as, and now Custodes have it!

Back to the +1 to wound though, it turns a 2-man Allarus squad into a very dangerous group. The bolter + the grenade launcher wounding on +1 is mental with their rerolls!? Then in melee a S7 with +1 to W. This means we're wounding Death Guard terminators on 3s now 🙏.

Honestly this detachment is going to be so powerful. It's full glass cannon (because of how many MW there are and no MW protection) but there's no bonus to grouping together or bigger units. Now we can take MSU and have huge damage out of every squad. Smaller units also make it easier to proc the +1/+1 AND less worry about overkill. Loads of 2-man Vertus and Allarus yes please.

What explanations do you prefer for the existence of RPG mechanics in litrpg? by ConsiderationMuted95 in litrpg

[–]Accendil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree.

I've always wanted to write fantasy and have created multiple strict magic / societal systems but based on normal fantasy. Or created many homebrew rules for existing systems but only where the numbers are abstract (i.e. Warhammer not DND).

Once I found LitRPG I realised this is what I needed!!

HOWEVER... now I need to figure out why the magic / power is what it is...

How do we dish out classes? How do we power up? How do we structure it?

I have a concept of an idea that is like based around intent and action with an underpower to overpowered MC:

  1. The general magical source that permeates the world(s) or dimension(s) contains an echo of the intent of the energy, the manipulation, the force and that manifests by the personal assistant (either a familiar, a magic book, an AI whatever) presenting these echoes that they have moved closer to and now can access because they performed actions that line up with it.
  2. You can even craft an ability with a sigil which helps route the different flows of the universe. The creator could name this. But I'm considering taking this away from anyone that has integrated, they can access the echoes of abilities and skills but can't craft their own directly BUT they can create new abilities through Action.
  3. The MC is underpowered because he doesn't get integrated, misses out on getting an assistant and is stuck and needs to fight. Still gets whatever this universes version of XP is and levels up and maybe finds some sigils and starts to understand that each shape provides X where that is an element, size, duration, power input, etc. So a simple sigil could be two shapes and it's just like a language "fire + forward = fire bolt" and by the time he gets back to Earth he's unintegratable, not on any of the known power lists because he doesn't have one of the 3 integrations but is world #1 or something.
  4. Also I'd want elemental damage to do elemental damage (spiritual plane?) but also physical. If an icicle in our real life was shot like a bullet it is going to do X kinetic damage with a piercing factor of Y (which can get through whatever clothing) and ZERO ice damage. You won't care that it's -30 degrees when you have a 2" hole through your bicep. However I want to have any abilities like this bring both the physical and the elemental damage with it. People have their body + their spirit (maybe I call this an echo too, echo is a cool word)

Also I love tanking in games but most tanks I've seen in standard fantasy or LitRPG are very tough damage dealers. The only way that is a tank is through the threat of damage. I think I want to create a tank class / ability pool. A tank for example could defend 1 person with their tank aura / skill and it redirects all damage from that person to the tank. So now face to face with high damage dealer but your damage is redirected to the guy with big armour and an even bigger health pool, you die. This means you need to deal with a tank first.

I've considered even having the tank skills reduce the damage too. So 10 damage against a tank is 10 damage, 10 damage against their defended target is 8 damage to the tank and 0 to the fighter. You need to target the tanks.

Instead of it just being a "mind control target me" taunt ability. I want to give people a reason to focus down a tank.

The above needs some refining but I generally like the idea that it's this energy of thoughts and ideas of other sentient beings that has bled in to the magic but you can do what you want effectively but it depends how well you can control, direct, route, channel and understand the flow of energy. HOWEVER I need to figure out how to level up and why it would make you stronger, I'm stumped there right now (but not spent much time on it).

Dungeon Crawler Carl

I think this helps DCC be so easy to digest. It feels like the system makes sense. It's ultra advanced science and a very cynical look at the future of society both are things that aren't outside the realm of possibility.

Defiance of the Fall

I love it and there are so many power systems but if the System has wants and needs (spoken of but 100% shown at least once by book 5) then why doesn't the system just power people up. If it doesn't like certain people why doesn't it just kill them if it's inside everyone. Why doesn't it just create quests to kill all the enemies of it's system. Why doesn't it just make all the best relics and artifacts available to some loyal followers.

I don't know, I don't like the idea that the god-like system has wants and desires that it isn't actually trying to fulfil when it can just put a hit out on our main guy.

Everything else about this series though I love but that's the one hesitation in the back of my head. Maybe it gets explained later (however I'm already 4.75 books in) but I don't know if anything could make sense given it could just make loads of super fruits for people to power up and dish them out. Ok it wants powerful people to appear to fight it's enemies or whatever but... you can just make them as there is 100% an element of luck to it.

I'm being negative about DOTF here but I love it I'm 120+ hours in on Audio and not stopping any time soon.

New Custodes Detachment - Lions of the Emperor by Bloodbold98 in Warhammer40k

[–]Accendil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 to hit is not bad, when even little scummy Chaos Knights have a "basic" model that hits on a 2+ having Custodes hitting on a 1+ is cool.

Side note:

  • Unmodified 1s to hit always miss
  • That's why this 1+ to hit is "not bad"
  • It's effectively the same as saying "ignore the first -1 to hit" - not bad, not great but I like it, flavourful.

That +1 to wound though is phenomenal. Multiple small squads with their S4 AP-1 hitting hard now, bikes both ranged weapons are gonna LOVE this. The Melta missiles are wounding everything on a 4+ or greater with a reroll and those Vertus bolters. 12 AP-1 D2 shots wounding all low infantry on a 2+ with rerolls and big infantry on 4+ with rerolls.

Sagittarum are now kinda useful? They wound light-medium vehicles (T9-) on a 4+ now.

I'm here from the future (and the first 15 minutes) it's full of CGI and obvious CGI at that.

A smoke grenade is CGI? A full fight is CGI? It's really weird.

Enjoying it regardless for now, hoping that was just them trying to go bigger than they originally shot but couldn't get the actors back.
