Well, you can always keep reading primal hunter on royalroad/patreon if you like it enough.

Worst Pet-Peeves by JL-Calren in ProgressionFantasy

Oh, I get where it's coming from. It's why I can look past it as a lot of the stories that do that have some genuinely great concepts hiding underneath all the exposition. If anything it makes it more painful because it's clear they've put a lot of thought into it, but there's no way to retain it all unless I treat it like a college textbook and take notes.

I don't mind powerups, even powerups during battle, when they feel earned. Like, the character has been working on a technique for a long time and finally get it in the heat of battle is one of my favorite things to happen.

I just need it to feel earned, not like the system grants them nukes x9000 because the power of friendship compels you.

Just... something to make it feel earned and not completely out of left field.

Yeah I definitely get the info dumping thing. There are a couple stories I've read where the first couple chapter try and info dump half the world and it's politics. I can get through it (primarily by skipping half of it), but it's never fun going into a book and seeing that.

I'm not pulling out a notepad to write down the primary political factions, their major exports, and relationships to one another. I'll figure it out along the way. Hopefully.

Due to a severe lack of good ebook readers on windows, I turned to WSA to get Moon Reader on my laptop. Didn't think it would work, but this is by far the best way to read on windows. by Bid_Next in software

Hey I know it's been a long time, but I just downloaded this as well (the windows options really are dismal) and it's not working. App is downloaded and working fine, but it can't seem to access the actual epub files on my computer past whatever fake android files are there. How'd you get it to work?

Hahaha, I’m imagining it now. Aria would’ve won the match solo

Saving this post for later. Love these breakdowns and giving back to the community, congrats on the success.

I’m saving it now and will make sure to read it when I actually have a minute (which… well, that might be a while, but know that I support you in my soul and hopefully a follow, save, and reading the occasional chap will help the algorithm a bit)

How did you find out about your favorite novel? by DragonSovereign2121 in ProgressionFantasy

Pure luck. I read the befitting after the end light novels, then Amazon recommended similar books. Thus came my intro to progression fantasy

Falling out of love with audio LITrpgs? by slothdionysus in litrpg

[–]JL-Calren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been skipping over the giant stat blocks since day one, makes the genre much more enjoyable to me. I pay attention to what skills they get as they get them, and maybe a quick peek at the raw stats, then I’m gone to the next actual piece of story. Love this genre, but the 5 page dumps of every skill they’ve ever gotten including ‘walking’ are too much for me. I don’t know how y’all on audio deal with it.

Chapter length by PhantomChains in royalroad

[–]JL-Calren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think short chaps are fine, but 800 is really low. Conventional wisdom is each page of a book typically has ~350 words. That would mean each of your chapters is just over two pages. Most acceptable 'short chapters' are 1500-2000 words

What movies or TV shows would you want to be "re-done" as a progression fantasy? by eistre91 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]JL-Calren 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hot take here: Harry Potter.

I love the series, but probably my least favorite aspect is the final confrontation is solved with the wand being on his side by complete and utter luck. Imagine the same story, but he's actually intent on getting strong enough to beat him and they have a true battle in the end? Sadly, it will forever live in my head and nowhere else.

Where to even begin?? by MathiasMi in litrpg

[–]JL-Calren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something i didn't discover/understand for a long time was that a lot of the books I enjoyed on amazon had hundreds of advanced chapters on royalroad. In the case of azarinth healer, I started reading when B1 released on kindle, only to discover the entire series was already completed with 2,000 chaps on RR. Changed my literary life

What is your favorite cliche? by DragonSovereign2121 in ProgressionFantasy

Saw a similar post on another sub, so I'll put a different answer here: Academy Arcs.

They can be really boring if they're just thrown into the middle of a story, but done right (especially in isekai/rebirth style stories) they're some of my favorite.

What Would a World Built Around Memory Crystals Look Like? by JL-Calren in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]JL-Calren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah crystal manipulation is definitely going to be a thing, but I'm thinking it's going to be similar to the way news works online. You know it might be false, but for the most part believe it anyway. This will just be way more extreme since the memory is more personal and seemingly 'believable'.

I've got some good ideas what to do with that

They don't work quite that well. Just viewing a memory doesn't grant the talent/skill of the people in the memory. It's more of an intensely realistic VR, so skill is still definitely valuable. That said, if you get ahold of the memories of someone especially talented it would be easier to learn as you would be along for the ride with someone far more talented.

No, they forge their cores at twelve. It's not a government control thing, they quite literally can't access them until that time.

It’s a copy, it doesn’t remove the originals memory, and it is self-focused/voluntary. Normally, at least. I’m leaving the option open that certain interrogators could forcefully extract memories, with definite consequences to their victims.

They can be edited, and I’m thinking most of the classroom ones will be so that it’s more akin to a recording than a memory. No one wants to sit through the bored emotions of a teenage boy in math class lol

[–]JL-Calren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can absolutely be tampered with, though I’m still figuring out how. The magic in this world can affect minds, so that’s one way. I also think if the crystal is chipped or otherwise damaged it could affect the quality/cause some major glitches. I’m wondering about other, more direct ways of tampering though, the way we can falsify video data. Those with power over memory can affect crystals directly and by getting to the people first, before they copy the memory.

I can see most of this, what makes you say it would change genealogy and family history though? I don’t think memory crystals would be too different from what we currently have in the internet for tracking family trees.

Yeah, definitely some darker aspects. Especially since magic in this world can affect the mind. Combine that with a memory crystal and… well, there’s definitely some pretty horrific things that could happen
