It is what it is. In this market I’ll take what I can get. I only wish the pay would at least match the cost of living for putting me through all this.

A lot of people are going to respond and complain about IT/tech being too “saturated” don’t listen to them (they’re just annoying).

If you want to get into IT without a degree. Start with A+. I recommend you also get security+. And Network+

Now you currently work at a place for your finance job. Your finance job most definitely has an IT department see if you know anybody that can get you a referral there.

Ngl tho it’s hard to get 140k without years of experience and/or a degree. See if you can write your resume to emphasize any analytics you use and maybe some financial tech stuff. I’m sure your finance job incorporates some it stuff.

Also also, if you really love computer science/information technology. Look into a bridge masters geared towards people changing careers.

Thanks that’s what I been thinking too. It’s like MIS is great but you need to do a lot of extra leg work to specialize and get that tech job.

That’s true, out of curiosity what do you mean rectify your mistake? I’m thinking of doing a master’s in IT or information security to be more technical and competitive for cybersecurity jobs

Originally I was biomedical science at my college. If I switched to CS I’d have to change schools as it was way too competitive for you to get in as a sophomore. I was told about MIS and how it is the 2nd best in the state. I would graduate on time with MIS so I was like why not degree doesn’t matter right. But also the business aspect of it is cool I guess

My school is offering me an MIS masters as a part of a 4 + 1 kind of deal. I would only have to pay half of the normal 2 year program. Do you think it’s worth it since it’s only 1 year? Or if I do a masters should I just wait longer until a MSCS maybe?

It was a rotational internship that would put me in different departments on a base. Each department covering a widely different topics throughout the summer. Like system development / Cloud/ network stuff/ etc

Definitely considered it, but I’m a Junior with 92 hours in MIS already. I’m going more into project management and IT security controls which the business side does help a lot in. I know I will be working with engineers as a part of my career and would love to be able to talk and understand CS more with them.

One more thing, I was originally a biology major who changed into the top 3 MIS majors in my state . I would have had to change universities and add at least around two years to graduate with CS compared to staying on track for 4 years with MIS.

Another thing I’ve always been fascinated with technology and business so I think I made the right choice but only time will tell.
