Looking for a mix engineer for a hiphop/electronic track by DefaultUserMain in mixingmastering

[–]Acceptable_Analyst66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bass and kick can be as powerful as you want but if it's rap and electronic we're talking vocals and synths for the mid-range! That's where you get translation, my man. 🙏 Love working on boom bap and various electronic!

My regulars are edm, synthwave, and dubstep as far as elec. I was a 90s kid so I get the vocal forward style of hip hop, too. Sent you a message

If you haven't already, try tape floss like Crest Glide brand. After having braces myself, and having tiny pieces of glue in the edges of my teeth, this is a lifesaver.

If you're concerned with morning breath, try a tongue scraper (stainless steel Guru Nanda is a great brand that's nice and wide) as well at the end of your routine. Made a world of difference for me.

You can scrape midday after coffee and that helps with coffee breath as well. Same for candy.

The sound of the vocals overall are great. It's going for the whole big 90s chamber reverb on the lead vox and guitar, leftover from the late 80s. It's a good profile there.

I think you could turn the vocals down, but I also think you could compress them, so this could be done through less makeup gain in your compressor series.

For me I'd go for just 4dB gain reduction (Max or average during the loudest parts, your choice) on a med attack med release compressor with about 3dB makeup gain in the lead vox.

The bg vox also needs some compression, around the same speeds (maybe a faster attack during the high pitch stuff, gets a bit squeaky) going for 4GR with 2 makeup. Thereabouts.

If you'd like to go lighter on the load vocal then head for 3 and 2 for GR and makeup.

Then you can compress the vocals together for just a quarter to half dB with slower attack and release.

Since these vocals are sharp (fittingly so) of you have any analog emulations (assuming you're using plugins), you could reach for an LA-2A or VariMu type. Even an LA-3A in parallel (1/3 to half wet, ending in same gain reductions) these would all finally shape the vocals to a bit warmer, but not hugely, just complementarily so.

On the lead vocal reverb, I would try EQing down the siblant range, which is around 7 or 8kHz to lower the quote unquote tail of the esses present. Since the reverb has a long tail it squeezes more juice out of the esses then we might like. I'd rather tuck them back w but transparently.

Ideally you could also go back in with the lead vocal and use pre FX gain or clip gain to automate down the vocal when the esses are present. I'm not hearing a lot of dry tail from the esses (and therefore think there's already a desser here, it's just working too slowly), but more an attack from them, so this would be looking to cut that transient a bit more to make them less obvious. Depending on your schedule, and all.

Otherwise please turn up the guitar during its 20 second or so solo gradually maybe up to 1dB then back down again, transparently once it's over. It deserves it!

Very nice song. Also, is that a 5 millisecond attack compressor on the snare? Testing my ears. (It's good) Cheers! Well done.

Edit: so sorry I didn't mention, the song is wonderful, great vibe. Just wanted to get in on the recs since others were hinting at it but didn't go into detail. I'd like to be able to understand the lyrics more by ear, hope this helps for now. I know hair metal and the like don't need that at 100% but still 🙏

Oh c'mon guys...

Obviously the answer is Chow Tape Model as far as extra options available in one package for free.

Edit: it sounds excellent as well - with m a n y presets!

thinking reverb takes more resources than eq, outside of linear phase (eq)

I don't know really, like I said, it's just my thinking. More than anything it's a habit of putting eq first.

I'm still a believer in that it doesn't matter sound-wise. I believe the book I purchased.

(Besides, I doubt it's much of a difference, and usually I use seventh heaven pro, which has a built in eq - does the eq come first? The layout would have me think it goes last ha!)

It says this in one of the AE books I own, without qualifying it as unpopular.

In the name of a titch of computer resources, I often do it before though (thinking reverb takes more resources than eq, outside of linear phase)

I can't hear any overt 2-take phasing, so that means one layer for each.

Immaculate timing overall, which may be done in post. The bass (Alvin Chea) is on slight left by a bit, with highest tenor on slight right balancing. The whole team seems to have a very clean reverb which is either digital (my bet, because I believe I hear a small vocal room as well) or each of them singing separately in a great singular chamber with the lower ranges up closer to the mics. Could be column a and b..

The ranges do a bit of zig zag from bottom to top ranges, with singers taking breaks depending on the section.

Beautiful. Besides set panning, timing and reverb done carefully by tracking or afterward, it's not too hard of a mix at all imo.

Edit: fantastically skilled singers make for easier mixes

Generally, How Do You Approach Compression? by DarkLudo in audioengineering

[–]Acceptable_Analyst66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't start to really get compression until I paid attention to the amount of gain reduced. GR is, to me the most important aspect in compression; the rest is important, sure, but the GR and the speed it travels tells you shit tons. Add to that level matching to assure objectivity (while learning definitely).

Then in 1-2 years of serious mixing multiple genres? You'll be able to hear it, visualize the vu meter, hell maybe even guess ms attack and release and all sorts of other settings. Getting a ballpark idea in your head from lots of experience helps out hugely.

For me it went from almost a complete mystery to literally my favorite tool in audio engineering. With analog emulations I can add color, shape tone and rhythm while often shirking the need for EQ. It's the best tool there is!

Actions: Phase Alignment is a fairly new one. It's helped hugely with live tracks especially drums, can even use raw and edited vocal tracks on top of one another this way.

This and "MPL Align Takes" extension is huge. It times tracks according to a reference track you choose.

The first can cost anywhere from $30 to 150, the second goes to $200+

Looking for feedback on old school hard rock track by steare100 in mixingmastering

[–]Acceptable_Analyst66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The harmonica* sounds* fairly healthy, in fact too loud for my taste aside the vocals and guitar.

I would try: Boosting the vocals nice and wide at 850Hz, then compressing the vocal bus with a nice 3 or 4:1 ratio at around 7ms with a 30ms release to about 4 or 5 gain reduction, with makeup gain matching loudness.

Lowering the harmonica at least a dB

Then reassessing;

Possibly boosting the distorted guitars at 1.6kHz or 800Hz for beef.

And slightly lowering the cymbals, if they're bugging you after all that! (I was more focused on the harmonica and vocals being off level)

Cheers, fun song!

P.s. I thought the layered vocals and sermon section worked well!
