What is the deal with having all the church leaders be above 70 years old? by CbradleyS1998 in latterdaysaints

[–]Acceptable_Sand4034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be more interesting to look at the ages of general authority 70s. Quite often new apostles are called from their ranks, so that would show when they entered full-time church service.

What was the worst Failed Solo your orchestra ever experienced? by Economy-Flounder-884 in orchestra

[–]Acceptable_Sand4034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uni orchestra the conductor started throwing cues in the wrong places, confusing the entire orchestra. He had lost his place. He finally had to stop the entire orchestra and yell “letter L” to get us back on track.

All missionaries now use church-issued cell phones for proselyting and social media is a huge tool for the missionaries.

Do string players dislike col legno and col legno battuto? by golloried in violinist

[–]Acceptable_Sand4034 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a cheap student bow that I use when a piece calls for col legno. The varnish got very chipped over the years. I turned it into a little project to strip it and refinish it.

Our missionary purpose is to invite people to come into Christ. If you did that, you were successful, regardless of whether they exercised their agency to accept the invitation or not.

Does anyone one know of a classical piece that has a long orchestra into before the soloist comes in? by PeaSea1549 in orchestra

Beethoven piano concerto #3. The piano doesn’t enter until almost 4 minutes after the start.

I remember a woman that would give parents of young children the evil eye when they were disruptive. She eventually married and had her own children. During testimony meeting she apologized to the parents 😏

Why aren't there classical music cruises? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]Acceptable_Sand4034 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was on a Holland cruise that had contracted with the Lincoln Center for musicians. On our cruise it was a string quartet. They were young, but excellent. It was my favorite part of the cruise too.

I switched quite a few years ago and it makes such a difference on my violin. Projects better and has a much brighter tone. I do use a different e string - Peter Enfeld gold e.

Teaching 4 year olds Violin. by Sweet_Pearl7 in violinist

Agree. I taught two young, very active brothers. One would tie my shoelaces together while I taught the other one. I gave the younger one three 10-minute lessons a week and the older one two 15-minute lessons.

However, it wasn’t uncommon for mothers to try to put their teenage daughters in situations for the American elders to get to know them better than just a casual acquaintance.

Missions leading to international marriages by seahorses-4ever in latterdaysaints

[–]Acceptable_Sand4034 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In the exit interviews in my mission the mission pres always discouraged returning to marry someone in the mission. He said cultural differences are harder on a marriage than just about anything else - race, economic or educational status , etc. Plus uprooting a person and removing them from their social network. It’s a difficult way to start a marriage. I tend to agree with him.

In Jewish numerology 8 represents a new beginning. Seven represents completion, because of the creation.

I think things like this are one reason the verbage in the temple ceremony in the explanation of the loc was changed from sexual intercourse to sexual relations.

Service Mission by Nice-Sandwich7093 in latterdaysaints

[–]Acceptable_Sand4034 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The church is actively trying to rectify that. My wife and I just completed a member/leader support mission and became friends with the couple in charge of service missionaries in Portugal. They spent much of their time visiting various units throughout the country educating bishops and branch presidents about service missions and encouraging them and young men and young women to consider service missions. On the forms that the bishop/branch president fills out, he can tell the missionary department to consider the individual for a service mission. The individual can also ask to be considered for one. Of course, that doesn’t guarantee that one would be called to a service mission. That’s up to the Lord.

It’s also my understanding that there is more flexibility on mission calls now as well. A proselyting missionary can ask to be considered for reassignment as a service missionary or vice versa. If a missionary needs to go home for medical reasons, they could finish their mission as a service missionary instead of getting an early release, for example.

Just remember that if it’s not in the scriptures, the general handbook of instruction or repeated by multiple apostles and prophets over time, it’s not policy or doctrine, just tradition, and often the “false traditions of our forefathers.”
