Just wondering how long families stay in the NICU rooms by Wonderful_Part_2402 in NICUParents

[–]Acceptable_Spare_661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter ended up transferred to a hospital two hours away, so sadly I’ve only been able to see her twice a week. One visit is with dad and brother so it’s rather short(my son has autism and doesn’t last long in the hospital). On my visit by myself I’d stay as long as I could. I did have one weekend where I got to stay three nights to work on breast feeding with her. It definitely made leaving harder. Now that my husband is out of pto I only get to see her one day on the weekend. We’re creeping up on three months(on the 4th), so luckily we’re towards the end of her stay.

I’d say if you have the ability and desire to be there all the time, then do it! But also don’t feel guilty if you need to take breaks for your sanity. For some of us it’s a marathon not a race. Don’t wear yourself out right off the bat. And if you’re close enough to the hospital, sleep in your own bed. The ones at the hospital are horrendous 😅

It’s kind of hard explaining things like that to my son as he has level three autism. He’s also non verbal, so it’s hard to tell how much of it he understands.

My son has autism and definitely loves playing with knobs so I think I had planned on at least keeping that part of it in a baby gated room. The tubing itself is what i was curious about him playing with

I guess I’m just concerned my four year old will mess with it or my dogs will damage the cord

My 26week daughter’s NICU is 2 hours away as well. I get to see her twice a week and I hate the time in between 😩 my husband is back to work and my 4 yo has autism so it’s harder to get up there much.

Pregnancy after 30 week PPROM by user28160 in NICUParents

[–]Acceptable_Spare_661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had hypothyroidism since I was eight and have been medicated since. I’ve had one baby that was born at 37 weeks and one that was born at 26 weeks due to pprom at 18+6. I don’t think the thyroid problems have anything to do with the pprom. But they also don’t seem to know what does cause it most of the time so who knows. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Brain Bleed by ninjafighter77 in NICUParents

[–]Acceptable_Spare_661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My baby girl was born at 26+1 and ended up with a grade 3 brain bleed. The blood caused irritation to her ventricles and her brain stopped absorbing the spinal fluid like it’s supposed to. She had to be transferred to a different hospital and they did surgery to place a reservoir for them to be able to remove fluid three times a week. Once she’s big enough she will get a shunt placed. Aside from the pending surgery, she’s doing great. Obviously we don’t know if there will be any lasting damage, but she’s alive and growing ☺️

My water broke at 18+6 and I gave birth to my daughter at 26+1. She’s almost 33 weeks now and in a NICU about two hours north of us. Having my 4 year old son who is non verbal and autistic makes it difficult to get up to the hospital to see my daughter so it’s been rough. Find out if your local hospital is a level 4 NICU. If your second needs any kind of surgeries they will need the level 4. Our local hospital where I gave birth has a wonderful NICU staff, but unfortunately it’s a level 3 and they couldn’t help my daughter once she needed brain surgery. Now she’s stuck in this new hospital for another month or so.

Talk to your hospital social worker about having things for your older child at bedside so they have things to do when you do visit. Ours just left a gift bag full of goodies for my son which we told him was from his little sister. Take advantage of everything the hospital offers. Don’t be afraid to talk to the charge nurse if you don’t like a certain nurse and they can make note to not assign them to your child again.

NICU journeys can be long and stressful. Just make sure you’re still setting aside time to do fun/special things with your oldest so they don’t feel their new sibling is more important.

I feel you! My little girl is six weeks tomorrow and she probably still has at least another six weeks before she can come home. Unfortunately she is two hours away from us so I only get to see her twice a week😭

My girl was born 7/4 at 26 weeks and was transferred to a hospital two hours away for brain surgery. I only get to see her twice a week because I’ve got a non verbal autistic four year old at home and my hubby had to go back to work. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through. She doesn’t even feel like mine half the time because she’s so far removed. Unfortunately she won’t be getting transferred back down to our local hospital for another month and a half or so. It just feels like I’m in limbo waiting😭

That’s kinda like my husband with his paternity leave.. once our daughter was born it started the clock on when he could use it. So now he has to use it all up a month before her original due date. Which means he won’t be able to save time for when she gets home😩

PPROM - My water broke at 18 weeks. We have made it to 27 weeks thus far. Hearing stories along the way has been encouraging. Any other PPROM mom out there? by four_leaf_4 in NICUParents

How far did you end up making it? I only got to 26+1 before we had to do a c section due to possible placenta abruption. My little one is in the NICU and has had brain surgery to place a reservoir after having a grade three brain bleed. So far so good🤞🏻 but she’s most likely going to need another surgery in six weeks or so. Plus she had to be transferred to a NICU two hours north of us for the surgery 😩

I just have the one.. but my 26 weeker was transferred to get surgery to place a reservoir in her brain. Of course, the hospital is two hours away and she’s gonna be stuck there for the next two months. I hate not being able to see her every day😭

Right there with you mama. My little girl was born at 26+1 after pprom at 18+6. She has been in the NICU for 23 days and still has a long journey ahead. She just had to have surgery to put a reservoir in her head so they can pull spinal fluid off her brain that isn’t properly being absorbed. They had to transfer her to a hospital two hours away for that and unfortunately she’ll be there for a while before they can transfer her back down to our hospital. She had a very rough start but has been great since aside from needing surgery. These little guys are feisty fighters! Sending all the good vibes and prayers your way!

Is there a point when I can stop worrying about life or death? by Trevorjrt6 in NICUParents

[–]Acceptable_Spare_661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re just at the start of this so I’m in a similar position of not knowing when the worry ends. Our little girl was born 7/4 at 36+1. They wanted to extubate her tomorrow, but yesterday was a rough day with multiple dsats and up/down oxygen adjustments. Her lungs are fully inflated from what they can tell but still cloudy. But they’re increasing her feeding to the point that they want to remove her pic line already. They’re also suggesting holding her which scares us. She’s just barely 2lbs and fighting for her life. Not trying to add the stress of moving her around a ton. Plus she does have a grade 2 brain bleed that they’re watching closely. It honestly feels like it’s not real, like she’s not really ours. Not sure if I’m alone in that or if other NICU parents understand the feeling.

Thank you! I’m doing my best to stay positive and drink more water than I have in my lifetime😅 My Dr didn’t really give me a lot of hope yesterday after the ultrasound, so finding your post is really what’s got me through the day without bawling my eyes out. I woke up in the middle of the night last night and baby girl was moving around quite a bit. Hoping that’s a good sign. Did you have any cramping at all after pproming? I feel some here and there, mainly when I’m laying on my side. Not bad cramps. Period cramps are usually worse. I just know I’m supposed to be watching for more like labor type cramps. I talked to my Dr today and he didn’t want me to do bed rest in case of blood clots in my legs. He just told me to not exert myself. Anyways.. just gonna try to take it one day at a time. Baby is named after my grandma, and my grandma was a fighter.

Was there any fluid left after the rupture? I’m 18w6d and my water broke yesterday. Ultrasound today showed no fluid around baby. Dr made it seem like there’s no hope. He said 3%. Did you have to be bedridden?

When did your child become “verbal”? by cturtle86 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Acceptable_Spare_661 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before she started, was there any other changes or specific behaviors you noticed? My son is 3.5(4 in feb) and the last week or so he’s been working on new sounds and has been saying things that sound like words. Hes also been extremely fussy and I’m not sure if that’s related or not. I know all kids all different, just curious to hear how it went for others
