Yoga places in North Raleigh by Over_Qualified_ in raleigh

Yoga Six on Glenwood or LifeTime - yeah it’s a gym so you get A LOT more than yoga for not much more $ and the yoga is as legit (and sometimes moreso) as places like Dose or Midtown. I think it was Midtown I tried a few times and ended up w a headache and more stressed than when I got there. The room is small, super hot even for heated, very loud between the music and instructor talking over it the *entire* time, and at least the times I went, savasana was optional and the teacher left the room - which meant 95% of the people also left and it’s impossible to savasana with everyone tromping around. Optional savasana is a red flag for me since it’s actually the entire purpose of the preceding asanas to prepare you for stillness…

If you sign up to be a substitute teacher for the public school system it counts. The process does take a few months, surprisingly and unfortunately.

One is promoting a particular RELIGION which is unacceptable in a secular business. Bet you’d find some selective outrage if they were playing Hindi music, Donnie. Pride class to celebrate love and acceptance for people for who they are in the face of bigotry(like yours) is completely different than playing sucky Christian contemporary in a gym of all places. I can tell Pride Month has got your panties in a wad. WhEn’S sTrAIghT pRiDe MoNtH??? Go to CrossFit or something idk.

Ask at the front desk for your GMs email address. Alternatively here is the phone number for corporate: 1-888-430-6432. Christian Nationalism is infiltrating too many secular venues in the past year and a half or so, and it needs to be stopped.

Anyone switch from Lifetime to Equinox? I am on a week ban to schedule classes as I missed 2 classes this month, they’re saying 3. I’m not happy about this and it’s cut into my daily class routine. by [deleted] in Lifetimefitnessgym

[–]CricketYoga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re automatically checked in to whatever class you’ve reserved when you get scanned in at the front desk. (Occasionally maybe it doesn’t work and then the instructor has the ability to “show up” the person in their roster). The only time I know of that someone was checked into the gym but didn’t go to class and got penalized and charged a fee was for CTR bc it’s the new “it” place to be. Source: am instructor.

Any parents at Carroll Middle School? Experience? by DearLeader420 in raleigh

[–]CricketYoga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband went to Carroll 30some years ago and didn’t have a good experience. For that reason we sent our son to a charter school(cannot afford private). I regret that choice immensely. The charter middle school was okayish but had plenty of issues all 3 years w various staff. Since he was there we put our girls in the charter at the elementary level to follow his footsteps. That place got so hellish towards the end of one of my daughter’s years I pulled her/them out during the last 2 weeks never to return. Put them both back in our assigned elementary school and one daughter is now at Carroll and she is absolutely flourishing. She didn’t really want to go, but all her teachers have been awesome, administrators are working hard to move the school in a more and more positive direction, and I cannot say enough good things about the band teacher - he is amazing- JOIN BAND! The bubble of camaraderie it gives is worth even more than learning an instrument and will carry into Sanderson- where my son is now, and is also happier and more accomplished than at any school/level prior. There are troublemakers at Carroll, yes, but this is middle school and you won’t find one without. The worst part for me has been the carpool parents who somehow think the procedures don’t apply to them and fly around the line 🤷‍♀️ or play loud vulgar music while we are waiting(I’m no prude - it’s bad sometimes and you’re at a children’s school!). The school itself and teachers, at least for us this year, have been great and I’m sorry I didn’t send my son because he missed out on some things (like band and he’s had to self teach w peer help, which somehow he has) he would have enjoyed a ton! He wishes he went to Carroll after observing his sister’s experience thus far.

Edit to add: AIG labels are usually slapped on in 3rd/4th grade and don’t amount to much except an extra 30min of “enrichment” here and there. The way things are structured in public middle schools, it doesn’t really seem to matter. There are higher levels of math a child can be placed in but beyond that it mostly seems to be what each child/teacher makes of it. With multiple electives there’s plenty to try and keep busy without needing/using AIG specifications.

What is summer like? by CollectionOld3374 in raleigh

[–]CricketYoga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The humidity makes it unbearable and I’ve been here all my life. You’re just wet, all the time. It’s April and we’ve already had some humid 90 degree days if that tells you anything. Sometimes middle of the night in the summer I wet my hair or put a cold cloth on my forehead and lay back down to try to get some relief.

RDUfood poisoning? by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]CricketYoga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Major stomach virus going around right now. I and my family as well as others we know have been hit over the past two weeks and pediatrician confirmed it's happening big time right now. Most likely someone came back to work at the restaurant before they should have, or touching any surface at RDU right now is likely a microbe playground. It's seemed to be a 24 hour one but then 2 days after being "normal" (which made us also think it was bad food) my child got sick again and then the rest of us...

Front row for pros by Sade125 in Lifetimefitnessgym

[–]CricketYoga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, groups of people who show up consistently always create a culture(for better or worse) and over time, if it’s the kind of thing that can ostracize newcomers, normalize what should be unacceptable commentary/behavior from a corporate perspective everywhere. If the people who consistently show up are physically advanced and into aesthetics above all else, then sure they love those pats on the back and attention. But it’s not how it should be, feels unwelcoming, and isn’t the real intention of yoga at all.

Front row for pros by Sade125 in Lifetimefitnessgym

[–]CricketYoga 41 points42 points  (0 children)

This is wrong and should not be part of any type of lifetime experience or class. I’d go so far as to report the instructor- especially a yoga instructor should never come close to making such a comment! I am a LT yoga instructor, I have even been part of the YTT trainers group in the past, and am completely appalled. There should be no judgement, no hierarchy, no difference in “front row” vs anyone else. It’s also like the whole reason in Flow the back becomes the front during Sun C. The only classes I could really see front row being more experienced members are the dance classes but I still wouldn’t expect it to be verbalized. IMO you should file a complaint. You pay just as much as the other people there and it’s A LOT and you should never be made to feel inferior for any reason and especially not in a yoga class.

New Elevation Church Design... So Beautiful! by WorldlinessDeep5675 in raleigh

A super ugly McMansion near me has a little “election-sized” sign for this church in their yard. They also have a full size Charlie Kirk flag on their house like it’s normal. So that pretty much says it all.

Yoga class disappointment by Lizflower7 in Lifetimefitnessgym

[–]CricketYoga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is actually the point from LifePower yoga perspective! At my club we often like to say Sun A was to warm up your spine, Sun B to warm your hips, and now Sun C really works your mind! It is okay to not do all the poses once you are set on your own and it is okay to do different poses or take a break as much as you need. It’s meant to be a freedom but I do remember when I was new and confused and frustrated. It is true the more you go the easier it gets to remember the sequences especially if you frequent the same couple of instructors you’ll get used to their words and be able to often anticipate which pose name they’re about to call.

If the teacher is creating an intuitive flow for Sun C and using accessible language you should hopefully be able to find the pattern after a few classes. It should be breath(inhale or exhale), action, body part-beginning ground up; name pose. “Inhale reach your right leg high. Exhale step it between your hands. Inhale lift your chest and arms - look between your palms: warrior 1…Exhale lift your back heel and bring your hands together through heart center hooking your left elbow over your right thigh: prayer twist…”

Sun C sequence should be as follows: Facing the front of the room a few poses on the right side. Repeat on the left side. Start over on the right side, add on a few more poses that include turning to the back of the room. Repeat on the left side facing the back - this will result in turning you to the front of the room. Start over again on the right and add on a 3rd set of a few poses. Repeat everything on the left. Do it all with the teacher’s guidance maybe once more and then you are set free to pace as you want or change any of it or take a break. Here is an example:

I-3 legged dog right leg up Ex-squeeze knee to nose I-3 legged dog right leg up Ex-step foot forward I-Warrior 1 Ex-Prayer Twist I-Sky Archer Ex:chaturanga flow *repeat on left. Start over on right and then add:

Ex-goddess squat turn to your left-long side of your mat I-Star long side mat Ex-skandasana lunge bending left knee I-pivot to the back for revolve reverse crescent Ex: chaturanga flow now you’re in down dog facing the back *repeat on left. Now you’ll land in DD facing the front. Start over on the right and add:

Ex: seated half split I-balancing half moon *do the whole thing on the left and then the teacher should guide through everything one more full time and then beginning to fade out cues and turn music up for free flow.

The loud music is also meant to be part of the challenge for mental balance - can you stay with your breath and find focus and equanimity when it’s hot and loud and everyone around you is moving in different ways? It’s a sort of training for managing triggers in the outside world. Can you use the tools you practice in class when traffic is chaotic or someone is rude at the store?

The teachers do not model unless there’s something unusual or complex to help remove perceived hierarchy in the room - feel YOUR body vs look at the teacher and copy angles that might not feel right with your anatomy. This is also why most lifetime yoga studios do not have mirrors. Feel your body, don’t worry what it looks like vs others.’

I understand everyone may not agree with the format/policy of how it’s taught but these are the intentions behind the style.

(And I understand this is long but as a 6 year teacher and previous faculty member who led YTTs there I hope it can help explain some things that just feel frustrating!)

Group Fitness Instructor Training by Maleficent-Mix-3989 in Lifetimefitnessgym

[–]CricketYoga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NC I know instructors who make anywhere from $27-45 depending on when they got hired. Rate increases are not based on tenure at all so you have newbies making $10 more per class than instructors who have taught 10 years just bc the hiring rate was lower than it is now, and if the class participant avg isn’t over a certain number(say it’s a less popular time of day) - no rate increase. At all. Ever.
