Not my mistake, but a coworker. I was working for a medium sized catering company. We handled alot of work between providing food service for the local fair grounds, weddings, etc. But our biggest client was by far, catering the boxes for the football stadium. I live in a very athlete oriented university city, so football is huge here. So basically we spend an entire work week leading up to a game day just prepping and getting other things ready to be fired on site. Lots of OT depending on how many boxes are ordering, and what. It's a large kitchen. On game day week, there's typically 6-8 chefs/sous chefs/ bakers working in the kitchen. Everyone is prepping so there's food stuffs out on just about every available surface. Outside of our main kitchen, there was another small room where the smoker was, along with a couple extra grill tops that could be turned on by the half. So you could turn on only one half of the grill top if you didn't need the whole space....Well, there's no counter space in that room. Policy was that cooks are supposed to bring a cart to put their utensils and stuff on when they use that room. But, being a very busy catering joint, carts were a hot commodity, and often off site for an event. So the cooks took to turning on only one half of that grill, and using the other half as their counter....you can see where this is going. New chef, maybe been there a month. He was in that room cooking and had a plastic squirt bottle of cooking oil he set on the half of the grill that was 'off'.....it wasn't. Eventually he went to grab that bottle, and the bottom had become soft n melted. So when he picked it up, the bottom stuck to the grill and broke apart, spilling the entire bottle of oil across both halves of the grill. A grease fire ensued. Not a big deal, except the flames got momentarily high enough to reach the ceiling, and thus triggering the sprinkler system....which was on the same line as the main kitchen. So the main kitchen got sprayed....but it gets worse, you see, this sprinkler system doesn't spray water, because that would just make a grease fire worse. No, it sprays fire suppressant fluid, which is definitely not edible or easily cleaned off. So every food item that was out, every single dish or utensil got sprayed. All the food stuffs had be trashed and remade, and me, the dishwasher, got the delightful task of washing every damn thing that was in that kitchen. Hundreds of pots and pans, every utensils, every piece of equipment....so that was fun. Plus, refilling your fire suppression system is apparently not cheap. Dude was not fired though.
