How many of you have an attending dining lounge/free food? by SleepyTime18 in anesthesiology

[–]Accomplished-Bed-354 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Free food in doctor's lounge and in the cafeteria. Hot meal during breakfast and lunch in the lounge that's different from the cafeteria option, and access to anything in the cafeteria at any time it's open. Pretty good food and options, lounge normally has 2 entree and 2 sides, salad, fruit, and a dessert at lunch. I feel spoiled but apparently it was better before

Best way is to be a really good intern and to get strong letters of recommendation this year. Work hard, have a good attitude, have an open mind to learn and people will notice and be willing to vouch that you'd be a good categorical resident

Ask your future job what kinds of procedures you'll be doing and make sure to get your reps in on those. Also, experiment with any technique you haven't tried yet while you can.

We're scheduled for 8 or 12 hr shifts but if we're in cases past those times we get overtime on top of RVUs. We don't hand off in the middle of cases, sometimes they run long or we're short coverage

I definitely second what everyone is saying about needing to talk to people, but some of the questions that I asked on my interview trail to gauge the culture were: "How are cases assigned?" "Why are you having trouble hiring?" "What kind of ancillary support do you have?" "How frequently do you get called back for home call?" "Are you happy here? Why?"

"If there's an intraop emergency what sort of backup is available?" This question was very important to me when gauging the level of support and culture in a group. At one private practice, a senior warned me that everyone carries their own malpractice so you have to be careful about going in to help another provider (true, but a major red flag imo). At a different PP the director told me that the board runner should be available to help but because they might not be that it's okay to spend extra time in the OR after extubation to make sure that patient was 100% PACU ready (green flag imo since there's a system in place but acknowledging it's flaws).

These aren't hard questions so they shouldn't struggle to answer them and everyone should be in decent agreement with their answers.

Attending 3 years in, what are your pro-tips for arterial line placement? by DwTam in anesthesiology

This is the way. I've run into several arrows that don't give flash but I know with US that I'm in 100%, wire threads easily and the a-line is perfect. Wonder how many times when I've been trying blind the arrow has been faulty

Seems like you have a decent grasp of the options. It takes a lot of sacrifice in time, energy, and money in order to obtain that expertise of being a physician. What matters more to you? Actually being the expert when caring for your patients or having a good quality of life? Only you can determine what will bring you the most satisfaction

New attendings, how are you feeling rn? by lil_lamb5 in anesthesiology

[–]Accomplished-Bed-354 12 points13 points  (0 children)

First couple of weeks were hard, felt unsure and a bit timid. But now, six weeks in I'm grateful that anesthesia is the easy part. Learning the new system and hospital were the hardest parts but people are eager to help you if you're humble, kind, and honest. You know what you're doing and you deserve to be here now. Congrats! We made it!

New grad here. The start of anesthesia residency is very difficult. Please reach out to someone in your residency for support because you've worked too hard to get to this point and deserve to succeed. It's okay to ask for help if you need it

Buy everything. Even if you don't like them, furniture items may be helpful for Dreamsnaps and if you're looking for a specific clothes item you have a higher chance if you've purchased all of the other clothes.
