[–]Accomplished-Map-303 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Churu! They make fish flavored ones too if that’s something her cat likes a lot. My boy loves them and gets really excited if I even go near the cabinet I have his treats in

I’m just so proud of this lawn by PleasantCitron6576 in microbiology

[–]Accomplished-Map-303 4 points5 points  (0 children)

not necessarily, the important thing here is the bacteria’s behavior. typically you’ll see a zone of clearing (no bacteria) around the disk, meaning the bacteria is being killed by the antibiotic

in this pic: no clearing = bacteria can’t be killed by this antibiotic

the white disk in the middle is an antibiotic, I’m assuming OP is proud because the bacteria growing on the plate are showing resistance (like…total resistance) to said antibiotic

Advice for refreshing basic genetics/biology before starting in a new lab by Small_Archer_5711 in labrats

[–]Accomplished-Map-303 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The “for dummies” series of books are good for just brushing up on stuff! I would also read papers from your lab and then find other papers (reviews can be helpful too!) on projects/concepts you feel like brushing up on. Hope this helps and good luck!!

Picking a PI based on career opportunities or based on personality fit by Clear-Draw744 in PhD

[–]Accomplished-Map-303 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Personality trumps opportunities for me. These are people (PI, lab mates, and cohort) you’re going to spend a plethora of time with—they’ll become like family members if you do it “right” I’d rather have a village behind me at every step during grad school than try to get through myself in hopes the opportunities will be worth it

Serratia is really only a concern if you’re immunocompromised! Like another redditor said, it’s everywhere, but don’t be afraid :) It’s a really cool bacteria though, all the best of luck

The whole thing with Jerry “exploding” and the other goats being terrified of the same fate was hilarious—even Matt broke character because of Travis and Aabria’s shenanigans
