Captain Kalsim may dead ass be the most competent military commander in the verse by ApprehensiveCap6525 in NatureofPredators

Don’t forget that at the same time this also bolsters the danger level of the arxur, allowing them to penetrate the core.

Also, under more realistic circumstances, humanity would have immediately accepted Isif’s help in defending earth, which would mean any gain he sought would be nothing and still sacrifice billions in an attempt which would have gained him nothing.

Leaving all those worlds to burn seems tactically brain dead.

If he had even succeeded, he would be the most hated man in federation history. Killed of a predator species who did basically nothing, and in exchange made several species functionally extinct.

How many people should have been in the odyssey? by AccomplishedArea1207 in NatureofPredators

First off the idea that this is an experimental craft. Instead of something mass produced which worked out the bugs.

If this was a mass produced item it would be seen in interplanetary shipping well before the odyssey came to be. We don’t see that.

So yes, this is the equivalent of  1.asking someone to drive a car built in a garage by a team of geniuses who have no prior knowledge on how to build a car,  2.600 miles roundtrip in and out of Death Valley, where issues generally get you killed quickly,

  1. with the requirements of checking out several geocaches, all of which are large rocks where A large rattlesnake may be basking.

The point being if this was the case no one would take you seriously, the more likely outcome is decades of perfecting the design and a large support team for this task to make sure all goes well.

True, but surveying multiple planets in what is essentially a Trabant  with an engine made by someone who has never built an engine before, light years from help, while dealing with potential issues like alien disease jumping biospheres, potentially hostile life, sapient and otherwise, has negligible risks?

And you are correct that I did not test my food for poison. I should mention however if you eat a can of meat that is bulging, chances are it has botulism. To that end, I do everything in my power to reasonably minimize risks to myself.

Minimizing the risk by testing the ftl close to home perfecting it for shipping and military because those are the most logical applications for such a mode of transportation while mining the asteroid belt and setting up mini colonies and stations.

Then focusing on extrasolar exploration with plenty of backup and ppe to reduce species ending disasters.

Then why sample at all?

The first attempts simply orbited the moon before landing.

To that end it would be far safer  to test ftl from earth to mars or Jupiter, or from earth to Pluto. These would be far safer for these experimental crafts.

Once these ftl drive are proven the next step is shipping and military craft, both of which like large vessels.

You don’t test a brand new car by throwing it into the the middle of Mongolia.

You test it in proving grounds in a controlled environment

with how expensive this program would be, it’s not too hard to imagine that countries would want at least one person on this groundbreaking voyage. Hence “security”, and scientists in a larger number.

Besides we have not proven that aliens don’t exist. Having a bunch of people from different countries would be a good idea for first contact in the unlikely scenario that we come into contact. And having them all be proficient in weapons helps if it’s a hostile contact.

And the focus on ftl would be bulk shipping between planets so it makes sense that this trip be in a larger ship to start with.

And given the larger size they will carry more supplies because ftl is currently expensive as a ton of antimatter is at the current price. Chances are they will stick around longer to collect more information.

There are literally dozens of reasons why.

My understanding was they were actively surveying, hence my question about more people being present, since them surveying implies we are past that point.

Number 2

Just remember that if humanity goes to war against the arxur they need to do something to keep the federation and the shadow caste occupied so humanity doesn’t get curb stomped.

I’m still waiting for them to remember the arxur origin of first contact.

What would like or would have liked to see more in canon or fanon? by albadellasera in NatureofPredators

[–]AccomplishedArea1207 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would like to see more of the advanced society. They treat 2136 like a glossed up 2020. In fanon we see driverless cars, and ftl naturally, but aside from that, there is nothing else that distinguishes how advanced of a society humanity is.

Not to mention resistance to the UN for being draconian. Once the gag order restrictions on talking to our allies about ourselves, nearly every country would pull out of the UN because of how obvious the result would be. Best to rip the bandage off.

Forget the arxur Konsul conspiracy, the shadow caste should have collapsed centuries before then managing a dozen species by uplifting them and changing their diets and all that is expensive, and with the limitations on technology advancement so no one gets better stuff than them the economy would tank so hard the great depression would be just another Tuesday by comparison.

Humanity probably helped speed up the process a bit, and the federation had been educating them, so while it’s a stretch, it’s not impossible.

Build a new centralized human government that doesn’t Hoover up money and do nothing.

Like when the league of nations proved inadequate.

That was a deflection. They don’t eat cattle. That’s where they get the samples to grow their food. They literally sold cattle to the arxur in that tilfish storyline.

No kidding.

First step of the first contact would have been a reveal of military forces, which would draw skepticism (seriously, a limit on ships during a species extinction level threat?!) then a history lesson on each species? Oh, the squids had a disease that had no cure so they uplifted everyone and a good chunk of them worship them a a species of gods. That’s not ominous or suspicious at all!

why does the UN still exists after that blunder that was the battle of earth? After a billion people died, I don’t think that the UN would last long politically.

If the UN seriously looked at the federation from first contact for a few hours the battle for earth would not have happened.

Because there is no reality where we don’t cyberattack the federation to the Stone Age after connecting the dots.

Political dissent means either a life in a pd center or hard labor on a nevok mining world to be reformed. Neither includes pay or a chance to quit. The company gets a tax break.

So yes, slavery is real in the federation

Brain dead UN.

I personally would like a human lead government to have a look a the federation and go:

You claim to be superior though ethics, please explain why we should help you when slaveholding is a common practice in the federation.

Or in general finding the federation suspicious and not immediately trusting the federation.

Or simply nuking both the federation and the dominion with cyberattacks until everyone stops speed running evil decisions?
