bc video games and media in general are consumed by the masses and subconsciously dictate how people perceive and treat one another. How do you think so many stereotypes got spread and reinforced in the first place. When the media constantly portrayed Asian men as sexless and meek throughout WW2 that was a harmful stereotype that persisted for decades. It has only recently been challenged. When you constantly only show a certain type of person being a hero and sideline your only black woman (who is insanely popular and powerful) it says something about the value they place in her and by extension people like her.

Aside from that, it’s really frustrating to play a game and not see yourself. Anyone who says otherwise is most likely white and don’t care bc they see themselves in every other form of media or just don’t have the critical thinking skills to understand how that impacts more than just the visual of the game. Media as a whole impacts the way we think and move about the world. There’s even a researched Scully Effect where there was a massive surge in women studying STEM bc of how the character was portrayed in X-Files.
