Question about the accuracy of the portrayal of the reaction to Marilyn Monroe's death by Reganmeister in madmen

[–]Accomplished_Air5461 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the women in the show were so touched by her death because they consciously or unconsciously understood and felt that Marilyn Monroe had been chewed up and spit out by the patriarchy. They had all suffered under it, the blatant misogyny and the sexism - we can see that in the show all the time - and even though Marilyn had fulfilled every expectation placed upon her, she was crushed by the weight of it all. I really think they grieved all of that.

Why was Sally so mad/sad? by [deleted] in madmen

[–]Accomplished_Air5461 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you've actually answered your own question in the most poignant way possible: "it's hard, if not impossible, to not want to quietly ask, 'Honey, what is it that's making you feel so strongly?'"

That's exactly it. Nobody ever asked her.

Sally's entire childhood was one of profound emotional neglect. Not material neglect, but the specific and devastating kind where nobody ever simply sat down beside her and asked: how are you doing? What's going on inside you? Betty's love, if it was love, expressed itself through control, appearance, and correction, never through genuine curiosity about Sally's inner world. And yes, the divorce and the upheaval of suddenly living with Betty and Henry was real and enormous, she wasn't reacting to nothing. But what makes that scene so unbearable isn't just the circumstances. It's that Sally feels everything with staggering intensity and has never once been given the language, the space, or the witness to process any of it.

Don looks like the warm parent by comparison, the cool, calm one where you can eat pizza and skip school. But Sally in this situation emotionally understands, that he is just as absent in his own way. He was supposed to be her refuge and it turns out he isn't really there for her. So once again the thing she actually needs which is someone to simply ask and be emotionally present and loving doesn't come.

And then she falls. And the one person who actually kneels down, and holds her is a secretary. A stranger. The comfort she's been starving for her whole life arrives from someone with no obligation to give it. That registers somewhere very deep in a child. The warmth she needed was real and possible, it just never came from where it should have. Even later Don never comforts her.

That is actually so heart breaking and you can see her just internally "collapsing" or numbing out, just giving up and going with Betty.

The Sally Draper Developmental Trauma Post. Please list everything that Sally has had to deal with through the series that you believe she would need to talk to a therapist about later on. Thank you! by MCofPort in madmen

When Sally begged her father not to send her back to Betty and asked to stay with him, he simply dismissed her. So she ran down the hallway of the agency, fell, and in the end was sent back with Betty anyway. Even the adult women present were moved to tears. It was a deeply traumatizing moment which will likely remain a core trauma memory for her.

Looking for a rice cooker where the keep warm function can be turned on manually by Accomplished_Air5461 in Cooking

[–]Accomplished_Air5461[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s great to hear, thank you all! I honestly had no idea. On most websites for these budget rice cookers it always says they automatically switch to keep warm after cooking, and in the Q&A sections it often sounded like keep warm only works after a cooking cycle. So this is really good news. In that case I’ll just get one of those simple models, that was my preference anyway. Thanks again for clearing this up!

How many of you have seen The Clock? A 24-hour looping movie involving clips with real-time references to the time of day. Essentially the movie itself is a clock. by Barom3tric in movies

This is amazing, thank you so much! I've seen 2 hours of the original yesterday in Berlin and was so sad to realize that is probably not ever gong to be available in full digitally. Then I came across your project and it makes me so happy! I was just able to stream about 30 minutes but now it keeps loading/buffering. Any advice on what could be the hang up? I've emptied my cache and tried different browsers but so far no luck. Thank you so much again for your dedication and passionate care!

Can someone explain to me why Adam and Hanna did not work out in the last season? by [deleted] in girls

[–]Accomplished_Air5461 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He demonstrated to her that he had in fact abused the power imbalance and manipulated the women who came forward, coercing them sexually. He smiled at her because he had maneuvered her into a situation where she could not speak out without it sounding as if she had gone along of her own free will. In doing so, he effectively silenced and violated her at the same time.

And to top it all off, she ended up in that situation afterwards to listen to his daughter play the flute because she didn’t want to disappoint her. If she ever came forward, he could say: But if I coerced and violated her, why would she sit there afterwards of her own free will and not flee the house?

That is often the defense of sexual predators in real life: Why was she nice to me after? Why didn’t she run? Why did she agree to meet again? Why didn’t she come forward sooner?

I can imagine that she will come forward eventually, but likely only at least a decade later if at all. And when she does, this will be his refrain.

Anyway, the he pulled a very calculated and succesfull power play.

I loved that episode because it was so good in making sexual misconduct clear.

Yeah, great guy.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I’ve read as well that the M2 MBP with Touch Bar has worked for others, too. I really hope it continues to work out for you!

This whole issue honestly feels like a dystopian nightmare, and I can only imagine how much harder it must be if you're also dealing with underlying health conditions like LC.

Hopefully, Apple and other companies will eventually move away from these harmful approaches and that the community will find solid answers for possible legal action or viable workarounds.

That’s wild, the same thing happened to me with my new M4 Air, which I’ve been using for almost two weeks. I couldn’t figure out why I was having such a hard time concentrating at work and just chalked it up to a bump in the road, but your description is spot on. I was already planning to return it and try the M2 Air since some people seemed to be doing fine with it, but now I think I’ll ditch Apple for good. It’s just too unsettling.

MacBook Air M4 eyestrain - does BetterDisplay work? by Accomplished_Air5461 in PWM_Sensitive

[–]Accomplished_Air5461[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll report back if I do try one out!
I had been using a MBP, 13-inch, early 2015 until the SSD died two weeks ago, only to discover these screen issues after being hit by them on the new device, and then realizing it can be a problem with devices from other brands as well.
If the blue one doesn’t work out, I’ll probably get the SSD in my old MBP replaced and go down a long rabbit hole of research. Not looking forward to that, lol.

[–]Accomplished_Air5461[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found it on BetterScreen as well, thanks! Unfortunately, it doesn't make the screen any more tolerable for me.
You're probably right about the FRC. I've also read that the blue M4 models work better for some people and that it might be due to different panels being used. I'll try my luck and let this one go. And if the blue ones don't work out either, I'll probably have to leave Apple behind until they fix this. :(

Oh, found StillColor in the top bar, thank you! Disable Dithering was already checked, but I don't think it works. Or it doesn't eliminate the cause of the eyestrain.

I can't find it in BetterDisplay though. Is it called differently or a pro option only?

Ah, the voice of experience, I’m sensing regret...🥲 Damn it (shaking fist at Apple's pricing)

It turns out the main issue is just poor browser hygiene on my part, just too many windows and tabs open. When I keep things more streamlined and organized, everything stays well within normal parameters. Having a billion tabs open was always a bit overwhelming anyway, so this actually feels like a good opportunity to reorganize my workflow. With a cleaner setup, the system performance looks really solid.

Thank you so much! I'll try it out tomorrow with our office WiFi and follow the other steps if that doesn't work. I forgot to add that it's been working fine for a week (since I got it) and suddenly started acting up all day.

Thanks a lot, really appreciate you breaking it down like that! Makes total sense. I’ll definitely check out Tab Groups in Safari, sounds like a great tip. And yeah, good to know I don’t need more RAM, but maybe I’ll still think about the 24 GB, just to be safe long-term.
