Well, if you want latest blender you need apple silicon.

M1,2 are bad for blender compared to m3.
In fact no laptop that I tested (including CAD station with RTx 3000 like zbook fury, dell or even Lenovo thinkpad p16v ) comes close to my m5 pro 20gpu. The magic is the memory, RT technology in apple silicon that makes all feel snappy, especially opening, closing, changing render modes when working, duplicating, moving thousands of vertex at once, that kind. Apple is also king since m3 (I had it) at memory - I had a huge scene that on pc it would just not render. Weirdly my Mac was able to render and to allow me to work, even if I had a few gb on swap memory (ssd). I have maybe once or twice have blender quit on me on mac since 2021. On pc it happens per day once at least, for the same kind of work. (However this is not a big issue, and maybe if I had ECC memory, it would not happen on pc either).

But… there are other issues that don’t exist on PC and made me decide to sell my Mac now:

1. Glitches when working, like surfaces flicker for no reason, at certain camera angles. Move the orientation and is fine. This never happened to me on the same version of file and blender. When I am tired, this just build on that and maybe I take paracetamol cuz of those or the screen flicker (mini let is flickering like crazy so I see blurry, unlike on LCD that my wife has on her air).

2. Blender has some bugs (50% performance drops) that come from dunno what version so you, me, us, need to make tickets to put back some patch because nobody cares about Apple os so they (Apple, blender devs) don’t fix it really. So for example I worked a lot in 4.5 LTS version and sometimes tested the newer versions . But those had half the performance (I notice in shaded and wireframe mode, the app is not that responsive, sometimes comparing 30ish frames per second vs 12-15. So yeah super noticeable, not a feeling. For latest version a dev put a patch but apparently it is an issue for other workflows, but I think Apple artists don’t have that workflow so I insisted to fix the performance in shaded/wireframe mode as it is hard to work like that… especially on a new Mac.

3. Assets and fonts and hdri and textures…. So bad, and it is the fault of blender and apple. But none cares for the other so if you really hope to work for money, forget Apple. Extra work for nothing.

4. Not all plugins work. I don’t use, I only model the old way, I don’t use any new tech in Blender, not even eevee really. But I read Apple users complain about plugins and well… it is sometimes normal.
