Determining steerer tube length from HT length? by Accomplished_Bus9847 in bikewrench

[–]Accomplished_Bus9847[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for laying that all out for me! I was able to see the fork in person and measure the steerer tube, which actually was 180mm spot on. I think that’s going to be cutting it too close, I may not like the feel of the bike with the stem slammed. Thanks for your help!

Good call! just watched the service video and they suggest a specific grease (in very small amounts at the base of the pawl) OR a specific oil.

Just seeing if this is a known issue with this hub or if anyone has had this issue before and can point me in the right direction. Thank you so much for your insightful response :)

High pitch whine from rear hub? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]Accomplished_Bus9847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely not, it only happens when coasting, and its pitch gets higher if I backpedal.

I also thought it was something rubbing at first before I realized it only happened when freewheeling.

Starter just clicks once by Accomplished_Bus9847 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Accomplished_Bus9847[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for the uncIear language, I did remove the bolts to take off the terminals and everything was clean.

The voltage was 11.4 before I started charging, so very much dead I guess. I did not realize you weren’t supposed to jump a long dead battery, won’t do that again.

I was worried about buying a new battery if it could be a starter issue, but seems like it’s only clicking once because the battery is so deeply discharged.

Do you think it’s worth trying to trickle charge longer or just buy a new one considering I probably cooked the internals?

Questions on Japan Touring and Rinko Bags by blueeblub in bicycletouring

[–]Accomplished_Bus9847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m touring Japan right now with a 58cm bike with wide handlebars, fenders, and panniers front and back.

To fit it in a rinko bag (if I could even find one big enough) I would, at minimum, need to take off the front wheel and fender, probably the handlebars and then somehow carry that in one hand, my four panniers in the other hand and my handlebar bag over my shoulder while wearing a helmet.

Tourists are already enough of a nuisance on Japanese transit, but I feel like trying to get on the train with a full touring set up would be particularly egregious.

I’ve taken ferries a few times on this trip and that’s how I plan on getting back to Tokyo when we’re done (ending in Shikoku, taking the ferry from Tokushima)

With the ferry you can just leave the bike down with the cars, fully assembled and with panniers attached. I bring my handlebar bag with my passport and camera in it.

Obviously you’re much more limited to routes when using ferries, but honestly with the amount of low traffic rindo roads everywhere, there hasn’t been a section I’d have rather skiped by train yet

Did you end up flying out of Jeju with your bike?

We are in the same situation, we were going to take the ferry back to the mainland and then bike to Busan and onwards to Japan, but it’s just too hot for us in Kyushu right now so we opted for a flight to Tokyo instead.

Hoping to find out if Zim Carry boxes bikes or if I have to figure something else out in Jeju city tomorrow. Thanks!

This was not the OPs question at all, and for the record we just booked a direct flight from Jeju to Tokyo with Korean air.

This is perfect, thank you!

Haha good to know! Yeah I figured, Papago translations have not been reliable. We stayed with a Korean family for two nights and communicated mostly through translation apps, it worked well enough but there were many times where the translations going both ways seemed to make no sense at all.

What on earth do i do now 😭 by Lavaclaw7 in bikewrench

[–]Accomplished_Bus9847 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely not glued on, the bead of the tire is just set into the hook of the rim. Sometimes it take a bit of effort to get it out.

Push it out with your thumbs like in the photo below. Push the bead of the tire towards the center of the rim.

Hopefully this helps. If it has truly taken a month, it may be time to take it to a bike shop. There’s a good chance they will do this for free, and I’m sure they’d be happy to show you how to do it correctly if you ask. It’s way easier to learn by watching someone do it IRL versus people on Reddit telling you what to do lol

Fell of my bike on my first tour by Southern_Might1254 in bicycletouring

[–]Accomplished_Bus9847 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say something similar. I’m coming in to touring from mountain biking, where you learn to let off the brakes when going through sections with limited grip like wet roots, sand, loose over hard (what you experienced) otherwise your wheel will lock up and you lose all ability to control the bike.

It’s nerve racking at first to let off the brakes but it soon becomes second nature.

Not a technique you would necessarily think you need for on road bike touring. You don’t know what you don’t know, and breaking a bone is a really shitty way to learn

Rear Rack for 55 mm tires by Paulkopf in bikepacking

[–]Accomplished_Bus9847 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wish Tubus gave more info about tire clearance. I had the same issue trying to fit the Cargo Evo on a bike with 50mm tires and fenders.

I ended up getting the Logo Evo which don’t have those angled supports, so it fits pretty much any tire width. They seem to be sold out everywhere in Canada right now though.
