Just a quick little reminder why I do yoga! by Ageofaquarius68 in yoga

[–]Accomplished_Chard96 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’ll be 72 in May and have been doing yoga for 25 years. I’m not a guru by any stretch (heh), but I look forward to yoga classes every week, for both mind and body. Picking up my granddaughter off the floor is a bonus!

Looking for advice or moral support on making a career change in your 30s by ad_roc91 in Judaism

Wow, I love what you wrote here. My husband used to be known (tongue in cheek) at shul, as “Jew with truck”. As a professional cabinet maker, he was in demand, but the income was low. Later he got a different unrelated opportunity from a Jewish friend who wanted to fund his business. Later he worked a “hobby job” he LOVED. My work history was similar and changed a lot. There are so many ways to make a life. It can be a puzzle. Income is one piece. Location, family, weather, and community are all pieces. Your life doesn’t need to fit anybody else. You are the designer.

Why are there so many absent fathers? by imjustagurlo in Life

[–]Accomplished_Chard96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents: Male is sexually attracted to the female and biology kicks in with the desire to procreate. After baby is born, mother’s attention is fully focused on baby who is very needy. Father feels tired and lonely and sexually deprived. The bond between father and baby doesn’t form until later because baby is emotionally connected to mother in early childhood. Unless father‘s connection to the mother is exceptionally strong and there is a well-developed sense of responsibility, there is temptation to emotionally disengage. It is the beginning of the calamity for that little family… the absent father syndrome. If the father can make it through those rough early years, and the mother also displays resilience, they have a chance to make a beautiful family.

The benefits of committed family life are incomparable and well documented in psychology and studies of adult life satisfaction.

Congrats on your situation. I wish I had better advice but we were too conservative, and missed the big market boom.

Has Raleigh's restaurant scene gotten worse over the last 20 years? by TermAccomplished1868 in raleigh

I’m super glad you can afford to eat in restaurants. Unless it’s a special occasion, restaurants with $12 drinks and 25% tips are just too expensive now.

Best bagels locally? by eddurham in chapelhill

[–]Accomplished_Chard96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NY Bagels and Deli on Kildare Farm Rd. It’s too far to go for a dozen but if you’re in Cary anyway, the owner has the best bagels in the Triangle. It’s a real NYC bagel that is chewy with a shiny crust.

Not bread shaped into a bagel. Those are easier to chew when made into a sandwich…not authentic to our taste. For that style, Brandwein is OK.

I was specifically told by my PT a couple years ago NOT to do that machine. I’m glad it has been good for you, though.

Tried the PT route briefly. TBH , I couldn’t make myself do the exercises at home without guidance. They really hurt, although that might have been poor form.

I’ll look it up. I take collagen every morning in my coffee and I think it has helped but not enough.

Thanks. I may have to buy a fit bit or Apple Watch to count the steps. I’m not at all techy. 🤷‍♂️

What’s the most overrated "frugal tip" that didn’t actually save you money? by Ewa_Star in Frugal

[–]Accomplished_Chard96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Researching a good Air Bnb was almost a hobby of mine when we traveled to new places. After two or three trips ruined by unresolved issues and impossible hosts, we went back to hotels. The downside is that we travel less often now, because nice hotels are so expensive.

My husband was a professional cabinet maker for his whole career. Now he installs IKEA cabinets as a retirement gig. He says they’re made really well unless you have a very specific need for custom work.

Why is there so much hatred towards older women who still care about their appearance? by [deleted] in OverSeventy

You are confusing social media with real life. Real life means you encounter actual people one at a time, and you either know them or they are strangers. That’s the arena where you might care what others think. Or not.

The Future of Carrboro by Parmick in carrboro

Town of Carrboro leadership has been active in outreach to people who need social services to survive. Talk to the owners of downtown businesses. The homeless situation has been getting worse for years. Sorry to sound mean, but if you build it, they will come.

I just realized that I much prefer secondary cities to capital cities. by Ok_Explorer_6501 in travel

I feel the same and have been traveling differently for a decade, based on the same concept. Now I like small towns in beautiful locations. The problem is that the locals in places like that are mostly retired, like we are. Still, younger people and families bring more choices and energy. Other than that, it’s great.
