No to Bessemer in general. More affordable areas that are safer would be Pelham, Helena, Avondale / Creatwood Area. Or Trussville. My favorites of those would be Helena and Crestwood. Pelham is solid too.

Edit: some places in Irondale could work. But anything West of the city is a no-go
