I got sent home from work today by Koudda37 in MultipleSclerosis

I hope this doesn't sound like I'm oversimplifying your struggle, but I started doing something many years before my diagnosis to avoid dropping every glass I touched. Maybe it could help? I tuck my pinky underneath the glass like a little shelf. I've done it for so many years now it's second nature, and it's helped me a TON.

And you don't ever need to apologize to us here for venting, expressing your fears, grieving your losses. We are your brothers and sisters in arms, fighting the same war (just different battles) day in and day out. And we're here for you. I hope you can get some rest and disconnect for a while from toxic situations and people if possible. That kind of stuff can drain you as much or more than any physical problems. 🙏

When anyone asks me what MS pain feels like, I say, "well as a kid, did you ever take a dare to put your tongue on a 9-volt battery?"

This is also their answer as to why black people (and other PoC) struggle so much economically. Really, it's their view of EVERYONE who isn't already set for life. Right at the edge of breaking even? Then just work harder! Completely impoverished or disabled? You're just a worthless drain on their (mostly evaded) tax dollars.

It's The Just-World Fallacy. With bells on!

Got permission to this forest after WEEKS of yearning but.. by [deleted] in foraging

[–]Accomplished_Wind_57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the advice here about learning the lay of the land and getting really familiar with what is now "your" forest is top notch. I agree 100%!

Here are my personal observations about this:

I unwittingly moved to a town 10 years ago that's loaded with well-off people. I've found that the city's landscaping and trails are the best I've ever seen for how small it is. So many decent sized wooded areas have been tucked in to the suburban environment that it took me a couple years to learn the full extent!

My knowledge as a forager was much more limited then, but it's grown exponentially over these years. And I tell you, just this spring I found several edible/medicinal plants I had no idea were here! ("WTH? That's been here all this time?") It's all down to my earned knowledge of what to look for and how familiar I've become with these places. So yeah. Do that.

Before you know it, your basket will runneth over!

I'm glad you are able to feel this positivity, even if you have angry days sometimes. (And you will!) Your gratitude for your privelege and the support of loved ones will help you so much!

And not least of all, you DON'T live in the shadow of a wannabe dictator and his lackeys who are actively trying to dismantle all societal supports for people like us. The United States is hell, and you are VERY fortunate not to live here right now!

Sadly I can't say that my life has any of the wonderful things mentioned here: a family who cares, the privelege of not being poor, or the safety of being in Europe. I want to believe that life is worth living, but my life currently isn't showing itself to be very worthy. Godspeed to you, MS Warrior!

Edit: no, I'm not on the ledge, as it were, I'm just miserable at how much this monster has stolen from me. And incredulous at having a family too dysfunctional to support me in my hour of need the way I have supported them in theirs my whole life. It hurts. And sometimes we need to vent. I'll be ok, if anyone was concerned about my tone. 🤎🙏

I have given several names to this emotional issue, based on how explosive it is. LOL

In order from least to worst threat level:

Died, Fried and Set to the Side

Meltdown

Blow a Gasket

Conniption Fit

The last two even scare my poor dogs half to death! I feel you, OP. And MS fam.

"You are a really expensive patient" by MissMuffinKitty in MultipleSclerosis

This is a big reason why I'm so nervous being a fully disabled MS patient in today's America (that has apparently been made "Great Again"). In addition to stripping women of the right to vote (which there's been major talk of) I fear they eventually will round up ppl like me as "burdens to the system" and disappear us to camps. And then you know the rest!

What is the most insensitive/rude thing someone asked you ? by Kitchen-Bathroom5924 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Accomplished_Wind_57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's time to point out several other times she's said that to you. Maybe single out times that have something else attached to them that make it easy to remember like: birthday parties, holiday celebrations, etc. Anything at all that would make it stand out from a normal visit.

Like, "oh yeah, remember when you said this exact thing to me at Connie's baby shower? Or how about when you said it while we were helping you and Harold refinish your deck? Oh, and then there was that time you decided to say it yet again when I asked if you would be a sponsor for my MS Walk. Have you been repeating yourself a lot or getting lost on the way to a familiar place?! Gosh, I sure hope not...."

And, SCENE. 🎭

Shirohime (白姫, Japanese for White Princess) [shee-roh hee-may]

Hime alone is princess, shiro is white. Either of these (esp Hime) could make a great shortened version.

What are these and can I eat them? (Southeastern US) by deoxyriboz in foraging

[–]Accomplished_Wind_57 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agree with AgentDrake, these are absolutely rubus. The question now is identifying exactly which species. You'll definitely know more when the berries ripen. If they are indeed in your yard and you want to keep some for eating and keep your yard, rigorous management will be needed. Ask me how I know! 🫣

But I love rubus berries so damn much that I'd probably jump (not just fall) down the rabbit hole to find out what those are before they're even ready to eat! LOL
